Creed iss a class or two above The Force Awakens, as was Mad Max this year.

Just saw Star Wars. It's not bad, but... meh. And no, I'm not a picky bastard with movies the way I am with games. So much seemed telegraphed though. Everything was predictable from a mile away. Wish they could chill on the fan service, but Star Wars basically is fan service, so I guess that was unavoidable.
Some cool stuff here and there though, and not a bad set up for a trilogy.
Larger issue, none of the two leads are developed in any interesting way. Finn starts at I want to change teams, and that's his character for the entire movie, Rey while, I must say, fucking WOULD, has charisma in spades, but she's fucking Wonder Woman lol. She's beasting and feasting in that movie, rarely is she ever have an obstacle to overcome.
Not that I want New Hope exactly, but nostalgia has somehow overruled the part where Luke actually sucks in those first two movies. He becomes the Jedi by ep 6, but in the first movie he's basically being saved by everyone, and then saves the day in the trench run, and in Ep 5 he gets his ass kicked. Rey outside of one fight, and admittedly getting help, was just kicking ass at everything. Don't need finn's help, can fix ships, can fly ships of any kind apparently, can do shit the series says actually requires work, and we have to take it on good faith that they'll develop something because trilogy, which isn't good writing. The first part of the trilogy should still set the stage with layered characters.
Kylo Ren was the shit though, he was well done.
@SolidTy:
Same here man, I had only watched the first trailer and hadn't really read or watched anything else. Still just saw the whole thing coming from the start. Certainly didn't help that they were re-treading so many Star Wars tropes.
I think I can get behind these new heroes, depending on where they go with it. But yeah, the villains, meh. I have an idea of some cool shit they could do with these characters going forward, but it would turn the Star Wars formula on its head and I just don't see them doing it.
But yeah, at least this may serve as a set up for some cool shit to come. Unfortunately though, that's the kind of thinking that made the movie what it is. Again, it's not bad, just not satisfying as its own self contained movie. Many things come off as "trust us, we're just planting the seeds, it'll be soooo cool later guys!"
To be honest though, the movie is about what I expected. I'm neither disappointed nor thrilled. I felt like I saw what I came to see.
@getyeryayasout: I never expected to like Creed more than Star Wars...life is funny like that.
I tried to go see Creed earlier tonight. Fucking show times on the website were wrong for my closest theater and I wasn't about to wait 2 hours or drive to another one.
I'll try to see it tomorrow though.
@jg4xchamp:
Dude, I was trying to explain that exact same shit to some Star Wars nuts yesterday. Rey is awesome, I dig the character... but she's a little too fucking awesome, abilities wise.
One person tried to reason with me that Kylo Ren brought it out of her with the force powers and yeah, I get that that's what they seemed to be going for, but it's still silly that these other Jedi who are naturally strong in the force still require tons of training while she goes straight to being a bad ass after a mind **** failed interrogation.
@mems_1224:
Every frame of Mad Max is porn for the eyes. It's art in motion, and not in the "oh look big budget CG" kind of way. I can't get around how awesome that aspect of the movie is.
And the action sequences, beyond being fucking awesome, are just so well paced.
Maybe it's partially due to me having zero expectations when going in, but I was blown away man.
@ConanTheStoner: I had zero expectations because I've never seen a mad max movie and it was one of those movies you immediately forget after watching it. No joke, the only thing I remember about that movie is that dumb guy shredding on the hood of the truck for the entire movie.
I've seen so many action movies that I just kinda zone out during action sequences if the movie doesn't have likable characters or an interesting world.
@ConanTheStoner: No joke, the only thing I remember about that movie is that dumb guy shredding on the hood of the truck for the entire movie.
And that's something worth remembering, your argument is invalid.
Nah, what can I say man. I dig it. I felt it was one of the best movies I've seen this year and best action movies I've seen in ages. I wasn't super invested in the characters, but I did enjoy them.
@mems_1224:
Yeah, I've been hearing nothing but good stuff about Creed, just kept putting it off. Tried to catch it earlier, but the show times were fucked, I'll try again tomorrow.

There is one thing that im wondering about
Is Rey Sky walkers daughter or something? felt like they were hinting at that
Surprised by the complete and total lack of originality in...pretty much everything. I honestly don't care if it's well written or well acted, the fact that it goes through the same motions of A New Hope is just super boring.
Star Wars fans really can't ever be made happy. Lucas gave them something new with the prequels, they whined and bitched about that and asked for something more like the original trilogy, which is exactly what Abrams gave them with The Force Awakens- and they still bitch about it.
Smh, it's like the Zelda fanbase, but worse, because it's far bigger.
Haven't seen TFA for myself yet, btw, mostly because it's not out here yet, but I will be later over this week.

It seems likely at this point, the hints weren't exactly subtle. Some people think she could somehow be Solos daughter. Many believe she is Lukes daughter. Tbh, I'm kind of hoping she's not connected to the bloodline and that she's just completely new. No biggie either way though I guess.

Yeah I never expected them to stick to formula like that. Was pretty weird.
Yo, guys, use spoiler blocks for your shit. I can't stress it enough.
Bro, my post had impressions, but was vague and spoiler free lol.

To be fair, I liked this way the **** better than the prequels, holy shit. This movie is in good standing as a start.
But being like the original movies and completely retreading the original movie are two different things. You'll know when you see it man. It's a shameful copy/paste a lot of the time.
But yeah, of course the fanbase as whole will never be pleased. Though I think many will agree that this is already off to an infinitely better start than the prequels at least.
@ConanTheStoner: I know, the problem isn't in your posts, but in someone responding to it, and then one of you, in a hypothetical discussion that ensues, getting carried away and forgetting to spoiler some shit. Always better to be safer that way. Hell if I am getting this shit spoiled for myself :p
Anyway, glad to know it's better than the prequels (though terrible, terrible, terrible writing aside, I really did like Revenge of the Sith). Would I be okay with an out and out retread? I suppose it would depend on a lot of things, in the end. Maybe TFA is boring because of its inability to surprise like the original trilogy or even the prequels. Or maybe I appreciate the 'full circle' thing they seem to be going for, I don't know yet.
At least we can agree that Mad Max is pure sex. That movie is like poetry in motion. A really violent acid trip. I'm running out of ways to describe it, but it's awesome is what it is.
Star Wars is a franchise that is incridible i cant believe how literally every brand in the world is making a partnership with star wars you get playstation and EA with the video game, subway star wars stuff, covergirl star wars lipsticks, samsung with their star wars phones, HP with their star wars laptops wtfff! lol
what makes me jelly is how the actors are few years younger than me and have already established themselves financially and globally and here i am back at looking for a new job mode :( :P
sigh i should have went for acting school

I didnt even watch the originals.. i've only seen the prequels lool
many of my friends were begging me to do a star wars marathon with them but i was always lazy to sit and watch 3 movies but i enjoyed the prequels and the new movie was very good
@ConanTheStoner: how did you not expect them to stick to the formula? Star wars has always stuck to the formula. It's the biggest movie of the past few decades. Of course they were going to play it safe. I only needed to see the last big trailer to pretty much know everything that happens in the movie.
@charizard1605:
Cool, understood on the spoilers then.
As for the retread, I mean it could be much worse. For all the nitpicks I'm throwing at it, I did like the movie. What I saw was kind of what I was expecting.
Also, there is still room for it to jump off in any direction. They could be lulling us into comfort now, only to pull the rug out from under us later, which is what I'm really fucking hoping for.

Word, no matter what she ends up being its still fine and i look forward to seeing her become a skilled fighter in future films

Hopefully. I think this is more an issue of Disney wanting to cash in on nostalgia and what made Star Wars so big to begin with, than of any creative incompetence. I think that we're always going to get relatively safe and fan servicey Star Wars movies going forward- it's basically another cog in the exploitative Disney machine.

How do you even get into Star Wars if you've only seen the prequels?

Man, even sticking to the formula has its limits lol. You'll see.
@finalstar2007: God damn it finalstar, just watch the originals lol. It would only take an evening or two and you'll appreciate the franchise much more for it. There is also the added bonus that you get to see the best movie in the franchise.
@ConanTheStoner: well, then I'd temper your expectations for Creed because that is a Rocky ass Rocky movie lol.
Ha, yeah I can see that. That's pretty much what I'm expecting though and if it's well done, then cool.
@ConanTheStoner: If you're still in a Rocky kind of mood, find the movie Warrior on Netflix or Hulu. Best "Rocky movie" not starring Sylvester Stallone, 5/5. I cried like a baby. :P
Just checked out a trailer for it, looks cool.
Gonna have a chat with the bowl real quick and then give it a watch.
@jg4xchamp: Creed was incredible. Vince Howard continues to steal the spotlight.
Mad Max was overrated as ****. It was an alright movie but that shit was basically a post apocalyptic fast and furious movie without a story and less interesting characters.
The plot is whatever, but it's elegantly paced, and the direction is what puts it over the top, plus it has the benefit of novelty. Something the sequel will lose for the sake of "more plot". But sure other than Charlize Theron's character, there isn't a lot of plot to Mad Max, but it's a tight and well executed action flick. It sets the stakes quickly, Max is instantly likeable, and Theron is always a joy in her flicks, so it was all there for that movie.
But yes purely story out of these sequels this year, Creed was the best of the bunch as Spectre was solid, Jurrasic World was trash, and Avengers is a superhero movie, so expect even less there. Still need to see The Cruise Missile in Rogue Nation though.
Also disagree with Creed being Rocky ass rocky, it builds on it sure, but it's an honest to god well executed movie. It's easily the best film the Rocky series has seen since the original, the sequels being endearing, but took a legit well executed film and turned it into 80s cheese.

It's heavily implied at this point.

Badly written tripe is badly written tripe. NO one knocked the prequels for being different, they were shit. Poorly directed by a man that was never a good director (Lucas), a bunch of plot progression that was silly and over explained shit about Star Wars no one really should have wanted explain, the tie ins to the sequels with certain characters were contrived, Anakin's whole arc ends at he had a shitty dream and now he's gonna become Darth Vader, so him, the Jedi council all come off as morons in comparison.
And I'll go on record if your complaint is that it's more of the same, you have a superficial understanding of New Hope. Because that is disrespectful to wildly better written and developed characters from New Hope, and just new Hope. Skywalker has layers to him, Princess Leia is actually a strong female character, Han Solo is the shit, there was a gaf thread that thought it was crazy that someone thought Nathan Fillion/Malcolm Reynolds is a poor man's Han Solo, when that's absolutely what that character is, and has been the archetype so many scifi shows have ran with is a play on Han Solo.
@jg4xchamp: Mad Max had pace? It was non-stop mindless action for an hour and a half. They litterally did nothing for the whole movie. It was basically the middle levels of Halo 5 the movie.
the cheese was soooooooo good in the Rocky movies though. Personally, I thought the first movie was crap and 3/4 were the best. Keep in mind though, I just saw the Rocky movies for the first time ever after watching that awesome first trailer for Creed. It was a Rocky ass movie though, super predictable but we'll executed.
Mission Impossible was alright. I watched it a few days ago. It's a lot like Ghost Protocol but not as good.

I'm not saying the cheese wasn't enjoyable, but the actual plot and character development was there in Rocky, it's well shot and well presented, but I think it is a disservice to Creed. That movie should be entertaining regardless of your enjoyment of the other 5 rocky movies, it is very well made.
One grammar nazi: non-stop action would be a pace technically speaking, and yes the movie is paced beautifully. Considering it's a move about one thing, and it keeps people on edge the entire time, yeah man I think you're underselling that movie a bit.
Rey was a freakin' mary sue. In fire fights she could stand toe to toe with the military, if not flat out surpass them. And she was just as capable of a pilot, if not more capable than Han Solo. She went from not believing in the force to being able to stand up against a sith without any proper training. As goes for lightsabers. She never had any obstacle to overcome and that made her extremely boring. And she had as much personality as a stone. Finn was boring as well, because his entire development could be described as 'I dont want to be the bad guy'->'I dont want to fight'->'I need to fight'. But at least he was described as incompetent throughout the movie, getting his ass kicked by a grunt and later on a sith. The only good character in the movie, Kylo Ren, didnt get anywhere near enough screen time.
Words cannot describe how disappointed I am in Star Wars.
Let the disappointment flow through you. Soon you shall join me in the Dark Side.
@jg4xchamp: nah. Like I said, Mad Max was alright. The action is incredibly well done but its super shallow, even for an action movie. It just felt hollow by the end.
I don't care for most old movies so that might be why I don't like Rocky. Also, the first kiss scene is super awkward, creepy and borderline rapey. I get why people hold it in such high regard but its not something I would watch again
Well here I am, saw The Force Awaken this past Friday night and as a Star Wars fan, this new one deliver beyond my expectations. While not going full details into the movie, I'll just point out that long, time Star Wars fans will not be disappointed unlike the prequels, Force Awakens sticks to the original materials as possible without overdoing CGI. Having said that, I'm giving Force Awaken a 8/10 but the film felt like A New Hope 2.0 but still, I'm okay with that.
This is how I rank my Star Wars movies. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back>A New Hope>The Force Awaken>Return of the Jedi>Revenge of the Sith>Attack of the Clones>The Phantom Menace.
My girlfriend broke up with me. :( Keeping a positive attitude though, things will get better.
Sorry about that man! Hope things get better for you, you're approaching it the right way so far.
Thank you.

Time to play a Persona game
Or pokemon. Pokémon's good.

I'm terribly sorry to hear this sad news. But don't worry, there's more girls out there and I'm sure the right person is just waiting for you, you'll see.
@Maroxad: STAR WARS SPOILERS
Kylo Ren? The Darth Vader Fanboy that is just a trash apprentice? REALLY? I thought out of the new characters Poe (that pilot) and Finn were the best. Finn had some decent development which was going from "This is wrong, but I can't fight so I need to run." to actually "I want to run, but I must fight." and Poe I want to see more of that guy. I'll be honest I wish that guy was the main hero and not Finn and Rey. But Kylo Ren was really a trash Jedi/Sith. He's just a HUGE Fan boy of Darth Vader and throws a ton of temper tantrums and was used more or less for comedic relief because of his temper tantrums. His one good part in the movie I feel was when he Killed his Father. Over all the Movie was great, but I disagree with your opinions on Kylo Ren. But I agree with you on Rey and I think the reason why it's like that is because Rey is Luke's daughter.
Am i the only one not interested in watching Star Wars?
nope. i find it overhyped IMO.

Aye, this is also my biggest grip with Kylo Ren:
Kylo Ren was developed very quickly in the film as an ultimate Big Bad Evil with abilities up-till-he-uses-them-we-didn't-realize-were-possible. He was the first Sith to ever stop an energy blaster in mid-air using the force. Kylo Ren should NOT have taken his helmet off. I was slightly afraid of him right up till he takes off his helmet, that killed the character was too early, I wish they waited until Kylo took it off like somewhere near the end of episode 8 or something like that but I understand they had to do it just for the sake of Han wanting to look at him before he dies.

As far as I am concerned, Kylo Ren was a metaphor for the film, with the darth vader he is obsessing about being A New Hope. :P
No, but on a serious note. I thought he has the potential to be a sympathetic villain with inner turmoil. Which (assuming he is still alive), has the potential for some good storytelling if they expand on it. However, the fact that he lost to a completely inexperienced fighter in the first movie doesnt bode well for him. He is not really Darth Vader material.
I think Poe has the potential to be a great character. But he barely got any screentime at all.
