For clarification's sake I did not actually play the VN of Clannad, I saw the anime version only. Those who have done both are free to criticize me.

As for my personal choices on "slice of life" or even tossing in a bit of "coming-of-age":

• Waiting in the Summer
• Non Non Biyori
• Hanasaku Iroha

Those are just my personal favorites off the top my head.

I didn't like it. I thought it was boring. I didn't like any of the characters. Then again, I did see it like... years ago so with a fresh take I might like it more. Who knows. Doubt it though.

I put the VN in my Steam wishlist out of slight interest and it ended up being gifted to me for Secret Santa, so I'm probably gonna try it out sometime, but it's so damn long and I'm not exactly an animu type of dude.

@indzman: Dark Valefor and Dark Ifrit are possible with planning and a spot of luck. Anything beyond them you NEED maxed Sphere Grids and possibly a few Celestial Weapons and well-crafted armor. Don't even try it otherwise.

Recently stopped my tabletop RPG campaign cause of a bunch of problems, some that stem to me just not having fun. None of the guys in my group are really showing interest in starting something.

There are 8 of those Dark Aeons. That's a lot of Gil to convince him to whip out that many OHKOs. Almost seems better to save it for Penance who is a total pain to fight even with 255 on all stats.

Yeah I dunno,I never bothered trying to beat any of them aside from Dark Valefor in besaid back in the day,I just seen some vids of folks beating Penance with zanmato so I figured. Mostly I just saw them as an annoyance on the post game gating certain areas. Couldn´t even get back to besaid ffs.

I hardly come here nowadays, though I like to drop by every once in a while. I blame Neogaf.

Scholar of the First Sin/Dark Souls 2 is probably the closest I've come to actually being bored by a Souls game. Not that the other games don't have some shit areas, they do, but they are like a few speed bumps on what are otherwise very enjoyable games. Dark Souls 2 is a string of stuff I'll enjoy for a bit, and then a long ass stretch of "the **** were they on?". Also it does Bayonetta 2 thing of becoming a bit too much of a "boss rush the video game". Except Bayonetta 2's boss fights are hype, Dark Souls 2 hasn't had a single memorable boss yet.

In Dark Souls I remember the Gargoyles being a fun spike in the early going, the Gaping Dragon was a cool design, Moonlight Butterfly at least had some dope music, and then there was Sif the eternal badass that he is. The closest thing to a cool fight I had was Flexile Sentry, and it's like the game knew he was the coolest thing the game had at that point, because he shows up in the path to the Lost Sinner, who is poor man's Artorias.

@jg4xchamp: So, like, me giving up on it and not pushing through with it is a good call, right? Cause I really can't say I've liked it enough to want to keep playing it so far. It doesn't seem to be as compelling or as... tight, for want of a better word... as Bloodborne was right off the bat.

I mean if you like that type of game, I still think it's enjoyable, but it's definitely Metroid Prime 3 tier of the **** were they on when they made these decisions? This stuff handled better, in the previous 2 games, to be fair Bloodborne has a few of those moments as well, but it's just a flat out stronger game because the core of that game is more consistent. The hit detection alone drives me fucking insane.

Also definitive proof that Dark Souls 2 is the worst: Texasgoldrush likes that one the best, that's how you know the game is sloppy lol

Yeah, Dark Souls 2 is the only one I didn't feel compelled to push through. I think I put in something like 12 hours and then set it aside. It's not that I didn't enjoy what I playing, but it didn't keep me motivated to go on the way Demons, Dark1, and Bloodborne did. Those games were like video crack once you get going. The kinds of games where I would play six hours without realizing it and still want to keep going. Dark Souls 2 I could only play in bursts of an hour or two.

If Fromsoft ever takes a good break from releasing these games, I'm certain I'll go back to it. It didn't seem like a bad game at all, just didn't have the hook I was expecting.

This is what makes me question if FFVI is truly the greatest FF. Considering his typical views, he should be a FFVIII guy. Maybe Tex just had better taste in his youth, who knows.

FFVI is crap. It's loved through nostalgia in much the same way FFVII is revered.

You can do so much better than anything VI has to offer.

Dark Souls 2 wasn't a Miyazaki game (he didn't direct it as he was busy being the lead director of Bloodborne), that's why it wasn't so compelling.

I won't pretend that nostalgia isn't a factor in my love for the game, but it's a very small factor. If nostalgia was driving my opinions then FFIV and PSIV would trump FFVI for me, easily. Thing is, I don't rate those games anywhere near the top, even if they are among my favorite gaming memories as a child.

I'm pretty good about checking my nostalgia. I replay a lot of my old favorites and more often than not, I come away disappointed. The majority of them don't come close to matching my memories.

Though some games, a rare few, match or exceed my memories of them. Games like SMB3, SMW, LttP, Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger, etc. absolutely hold up. FFVI is another one of those games. My last replay was a year or two ago and I appreciated the game more now than I ever did back in my youth.

Glad you mentioned FFVII, that's another example. When I first picked up FFVII I thought it was the greatest game of all time. I was enthralled, I couldn't believe how "amazing" it was. Now? I can't even play through the game. On the flip side, I could start up a new FFVI file tonight and be having a great time.

Of course you're going for the incendiary approach here, in no way can FFVI be considered crap lol. You don't think it's great? Cool. You don't even think it's good? Well, that's fine. But crap? Nope. Especially not so if we're comparing it to other games in the series.

Yeah, I get that. Almost seems like they shouldn't have even bothered. Franchise fatigue will start settling on these games soon, no point in squeezing in a less-than-stellar effort.

If we're going with jrpgs are shit, I have no real problem with calling FF6 crap, it's a small price to pay. If we're arguing that genre went on to do better things than FF6? Nope, not even remotely close.

Well friend, as with everything it does not apply on an individual basis but more a generalization.

It has a lousy progression (Leveling) system and a weak story and equally weak cast to prop it up. The music, interesting villain and visually interesting world are the only things it has going for it.

Also, I don't think it can hold a candle to various other games in the series. Like IV, V, X-2 and XII IZJS.

I feel that anything FFVI did was outdone if not by Atlus, by Enix and their DQ series.

Well for starters Atlus has a poor sense of pace and the dungeons in their games are historically sloppy. SMT3 is a bit of an exception in that regard, and even then that game has stretches that are straight tedious. But given how much of that genre was turn based RPGs, FF6 benefits very similar to Chrono Trigger, by just being better paced than a lot of that genre. Persona gets by on a lot of questionable gameplay tedium on pure personality of its characters, which is fine and all, but 6 is a better put together game. Just one with a really shitty plot, because all Final Fantasy games have bad plot, all of them.

Only DQ I played is the one on PS2, there are STD's I would rather have than say positive things about that game.

I can't say I agree with the pacing in VI, since I found most of the first half to be near pointless "point A to point B because lame reasons" and the second half was almost optional. But I can see how it appears far more streamlined compared to most other JRPGs, both in the series and out.

I am tempted to cry over the DQ comment but I freely admit the series is pretty much a form of madness in itself. But I did grow up with it so I can't help but love it.

I listened to aljosa explain on skype how he was farming slimes for whatever dumb reason, while he openly shits on Diablo with me, for exactly the reasons that I think Diablo is aids feces. I was like brah? R u serious?

I might give the new one a go, or dig up that one that was on the DS/3DS or whatever.
