Why don't you post the weekly numbers for the past 6 months? kingtito
Is a year good?

http://vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=Wii®1=Japan&cons2=PS3®2=Japan&cons3=X360®3=Japan&start=39509&end=39873

Maybe the reason Japanese people aren't bying teh Wii now is because a lot of them got them around christmas.

So according to that chart the Wii has been consistantly out selling the PS3 for almost the entire year. So if the Wii fad is over what does that mean for the PS3? I guess it never started.

vgchartz isn't accurate at all. mgs 4 said to have sold over 4 million copies about 2 months ago is stil 3.98. tekken 5 has said to have sold a little over a million is actually more than that....vgchartz isn't accurate enough of a source...

The Wii starts to sell poorly and everyone thinks it going to stop selling? Just from it selling poorly for a short time.

SO4 and Yakuza 3 just released, games put systems up in Japan all the time. I imagine the same will happen again once DQX and Monster Hunter 3 release.

No. The snes, PS1, and PS2 were certainly popular but they were not treated as fads.

You didn't turn on comedy central and see some comedian devote an entire section to "this new PS1 thing." Grinning_Demon

And? Please tell me, when do you stop calling something a fad and start aknowledging it as a successfull product ?

What seperates both? Somebody talking about it on TV makes it a fad? No, it means its popular with the mainstream crowd, and with adults, something the PS1 wasnt.

No one was using their snes as an excercise method.

Those systems weren't treated like the wii. The wii is not treated like a console. It is treated like a fun new toy by the general public. THAT is who nintendo is adopting into their fanbase.

hakanakumono

General public always treated consoles as toys. The diference is that they aknowledge it as a valid form of entertainment now instead of completely dismissing it as a loser/manbaby7/nerd's hobby.

You seem to have a wierd perception that the mainstream audience takes the PS360 seriously lol, they dont give a crap about them. Its the painfull truth

It's both a fad and a successful product.

TV isn't a fad because its well integrated into the lives of people as not only a source of entertainment, but news. It has also existed for longer than a decade.

No, the PS1 actually did expand videogames to not only a larger age group, but it also created a reputation for videogaming as more of an adult hobby than it had previously been seen with the snes and genesis - because of games such as Resident Evil and Tomb Raider that came to define its library.

The wii pulls in a different audience than those who bought PS2s last gen - although it pulls many of them in as well. The wii pulls in people who have never experienced gaming - to gaming, and its much more of a toy to them than other casuals who have simply grown up with gaming, owning a few games and having a console int heir home.

I'm not saying that people do - in fact, you bring up an excellent point. People who buy the wii could care less about other consoles. They're not knowledgable about them. The wii is simply the videogame system that got their attention. It's something new. They're not out to buy a videogame system, they're out to buy a toy.

How people view consoles is evident in the games they buy.

For the PS1, games like Resident Evil and Final Fantasy were being played by those who had never really got into gaming before, or never played antyhing beyond games like mario and sonic - more child oriented games.

For the wii, games like Carnival Games are selling fairly well because people who are new to gaming, and do not buy wii with the intention of buying a game console, view the system as a minigame collection in itself.

It was bound to happen, i mean almost everyone in Japan that is interested in videogames has a Wii or a DS. sure it may not be 120 million, but sales are bound to slow down eventually.

It's both a fad and a successful product.

TV isn't a fad because its well integrated into the lives of people as not only a source of entertainment, but news. It has also existed for longer than a decade. hakanakumono

Lets face it, labelling something a fad is a very sketchy thing to do. Calling Furby or the Tamagochi a fad is easier since its a complete product.

A console is like a DVD player, a means to enjoy external products. With so many consoles in so many households, companies will continue to produce big games that spike interest to those who have it (the console) and drive others to buy it. Thats why products like consoles cant be easily labled as fads.

Comparing TVs, Fridges, Cars to Consoles is silly.

No, the PS1 actually did expand videogames to not only a larger age group, but it also created a reputation for videogaming as more of an adult hobby than it had previously been seen with the snes and genesis - because of games such as Resident Evil and Tomb Raider that came to define its library. hakanakumono

No, it didnt appeal to adults. It appealed to teenagers. The only thing it established was the "cool/hip" image about videogames.

It helped kill the kids toy perception around consoles a bit but it still was marketed towards teens. Most people above 20/25 had little to no interest in it.

That only happened with the PS2 and its hability to play DVDs.

The wii pulls in a different audience than those who bought PS2s last gen - although it pulls many of them in as well. The wii pulls in people who have never experienced gaming - to gaming, and its much more of a toy to them than other casuals who have simply grown up with gaming, owning a few games and having a console int heir home.

hakanakumono

1) Either the PS2 audience suddenly gave up gaming / where kidnapped by aliens/ died, or they bought a Wii this gen. Otherwise, how can you explain the "low" numbers of HD consoles sold compared to the Wii. What are all those previous PS2 owners doing?

I'm positive that a significant slice of the Wii's userbase is the same that made the PS2 the leader last gen. Many here believe that the hardcore made the PS2 successfull, but thats total BS. The casual masses made it what it is.

2) But Videogames ARE toys. Geez is it so hard to accept that? The general public is right, they ARE toys and the only delusional ones are those that think that they are something more. They are not and theres nothing wrong or condescending about that. The only diference is that we are more dedicated to this particular hobby.

You made the TV comparison.

Teenagers and young adults. These same teenagers and young adults w ould buy PS2 because of their experience with the PS1.

1. They bought 360s. The price of the PS2 was just too much at the time, and many were angry that sony wanted them to ever even leave the PS2.

2. The wii's userbase is some of the PS2 userbase, but its also a LOT of people who have never played before. Children, of course. Grandparents. Even some adults.

3. Videogames are toys just as much as books are toys. Vidoegames are a medium that requires interaction. Some videogames are more like toys, but I think you'd be hard pressed to call a game like Final Fantasy tactics a "toy."

Yes, there is something condescending about calling something a "toy." When people refer to their boats as toys or consoles they are equating themselves with childlike properites and a lust for simple, somewhat juvenlie pleasure.

hakanakumono

So labeling something a toy is directly related to how dificult/chalenging it is? Or how old the target demographic is?

Theres a large group of people who seem to be offended by the word "toy" and try to change it at all costs. They call action figures; statues, figurines collectables, etc... so theres a distinction between those and kid's action figures.

I think this is a combination of teen/young adult's insecurity and a missenterpretation of the word "toy" and what it means in certain situations.

When adults call their boats toys, they do it because its purpose is the same as toys were when they were kids. Regardless of its complexity, its an expendable object whose function is to entertain, nothing more. If its purpose is transportation, then its a vehicle, it becomes a necessity.

As of now, consoles are not a necessity and the word toy applies perfectly if people stop relating it to levels of complexity and ages.

How complex the game is and the target audience relate to whether you can call a game a toy or not. If a game's primary purpose is to tell a story, its not a toy. If a game's primary purpose is to engage the palyer ind eep strategy, its not a toy.

Exactly. Simple pleasure, simple entertainment. A toy. And woah woah woah, dont jump a head. Just becuase you HAVE a boat doesn't mean you NEED one, especially when you call it your toy. When you call it your toy you are signifying "it is for fun." If you call your car a "toy" it implies a disconnect from necessity. To call a car a "toy" that you rely upon would mean you have poor command of the English language.

"Toy" connotates a lack of inherit depth or value beyond superficial fun.

Just because something is not a necessity does not make it a toy. And no, it DOES relate to complexity and age groups.

Okay i think this really is a cultural thing, so we'l be just be running in circles here.
See, i dont see things that way, the word "toy" will have diferent meanings within diferent contexts. If an adult says he has a new "toy" its inheirant that its complexity is appropriate or appealing to his age.

If an adult mentions a toy it is apparent that it is a toy for adults, but its still a negative connotation. In the case of an adult, it suggests affluence and indulgence.

Okay.

[QUOTE="AgentA-Mi6"]If yakuza 3 came out overseas most people wouldn't even notice just like valkyria Chronicles :(Master-Thief-09
So, what's your point?

Western players have different tastes, Shooters, RTS Sports, Gun centered action games (uncharted), platformers etc

The wii is so low because most people have one already. All Nintendo has to do is release new colors and it will be back on top again.

Im not trying to defend the wii cuz i have it and i do hate it. Those who say the wii dont have any good games coming in 09 are wrong. Well at least the japan part. I do say the sells will go down cuz plenty of ppl have one. Almost everyone knows someone who has one. The ps3 i believe is the new talk going on over there. They have more and good exclusives over there right now. I say PS3 leads for awhile over there in terms of consoles. The 360 though doesnt stand a chance. I even think the ones who have one are to embarrassed to admit it. Its a good system, but japan hates american made things i hear.

Are Wii sales after 2 years still called a fad?

The funny thing is - What PS3 game is fueling this?

Famiking

Ryuu Ga Gotoku 3 (Yakuza 3) One things for sure, with the release of RE5 next week, PS3 can possibly beat the Wii for the next 6-9 weeks.

Splendid

In that case, maybe Sega will come to their senses and make an English language version of the game.

It is a fad. Thats the way the public treats it.

There's nothing saying fads can't last more than a year.

hakanakumono

Every console leader is a fad then, no?

No. The snes, PS1, and PS2 were certainly popular but they were not treated as fads.

You didn't turn on comedy central and see some comedian devote an entire section to "this new PS1 thing."

No one was using their snes as an excercise method.

Those systems weren't treated like the wii. The wii is not treated like a console. It is treated like a fun new toy by the general public. THAT is who nintendo is adopting into their fanbase.

The NES powerpad and it's aerobics games would like to say hello to you. Mario Paint for the SNES would like to welcome you to world of non-game games from Nintendo. All these 14 year old PS2-era gamers have zero awareness of anything before Halo and God of War. The Wii has had 2 bad weeks in the worst selling region on the globe but is still monstering everywhere else on the planet. Did Miyamoto steal your girlfriend or something? Your Nintendo hatred is not only flaming, but its completely baseless. If Ninty has 2 bad weeks in Japan and its over, what do you say to the two bad years MS and Sony have had on a global level?

Hopefully that is a trend that will continue. The ridiculous dominance of the Wii must end. All hail the PlayStation 3!

So basically every console leader is a fad? After 2 years of high volumes of sales?

Wii just had a couple of bad weeks... one cannot pretend it cannot happen... I dont like the Wii but certainly after 2 yrs of amazing sales i think its normal that there is a low (sales) period... Once some great games get released most probably Wii will be back in 1st place (saleswise)..

Good hopefully Nintendo gets the message and actually releases something instead of anything with Wii in it.
