Lets face it, labelling something a fad is a very sketchy thing to do. Calling Furby or the Tamagochi a fad is easier since its a complete product.
A console is like a DVD player, a means to enjoy external products. With so many consoles in so many households, companies will continue to produce big games that spike interest to those who have it (the console) and drive others to buy it. Thats why products like consoles cant be easily labled as fads.
Comparing TVs, Fridges, Cars to Consoles is silly.
[QUOTE="hakanakumono"] No, the PS1 actually did expand videogames to not only a larger age group, but it also created a reputation for videogaming as more of an adult hobby than it had previously been seen with the snes and genesis - because of games such as Resident Evil and Tomb Raider that came to define its library. No, it didnt appeal to adults. It appealed to teenagers. The only thing it established was the "cool/hip" image about videogames.
It helped kill the kids toy perception around consoles a bit but it still was marketed towards teens. Most people above 20/25 had little to no interest in it.
That only happened with the PS2 and its hability to play DVDs.
The wii pulls in a different audience than those who bought PS2s last gen - although it pulls many of them in as well. The wii pulls in people who have never experienced gaming - to gaming, and its much more of a toy to them than other casuals who have simply grown up with gaming, owning a few games and having a console int heir home.I'm not saying that people do - in fact, you bring up an excellent point. People who buy the wii could care less about other consoles. They're not knowledgable about them. The wii is simply the videogame system that got their attention. It's something new. They're not out to buy a videogame system, they're out to buy a toy.

1) Either the PS2 audience suddenly gave up gaming / where kidnapped by aliens/ died, or they bought a Wii this gen. Otherwise, how can you explain the "low" numbers of HD consoles sold compared to the Wii. What are all those previous PS2 owners doing?
I'm positive that a significant slice of the Wii's userbase is the same that made the PS2 the leader last gen. Many here believe that the hardcore made the PS2 successfull, but thats total BS. The casual masses made it what it is.
2) But Videogames ARE toys. Geez is it so hard to accept that? The general public is right, they ARE toys and the only delusional ones are those that think that they are something more. They are not and theres nothing wrong or condescending about that. The only diference is that we are more dedicated to this particular hobby.
You made the TV comparison.
Teenagers and young adults. These same teenagers and young adults w ould buy PS2 because of their experience with the PS1.
1. They bought 360s. The price of the PS2 was just too much at the time, and many were angry that sony wanted them to ever even leave the PS2.
2. The wii's userbase is some of the PS2 userbase, but its also a LOT of people who have never played before. Children, of course. Grandparents. Even some adults.
3. Videogames are toys just as much as books are toys. Vidoegames are a medium that requires interaction. Some videogames are more like toys, but I think you'd be hard pressed to call a game like Final Fantasy tactics a "toy."
Yes, there is something condescending about calling something a "toy." When people refer to their boats as toys or consoles they are equating themselves with childlike properites and a lust for simple, somewhat juvenlie pleasure.
