I am not sure whether I should laugh or cry over the fact that there still are people who deem the Wii to be a fad.

All consoles are fads. No console stays forever, eventually the PS2 will die and it will be a fad. (How long it stayed is irrelevant, once it dies that's it)
So basically every console leader is a fad? After 2 years of high volumes of sales? Jerell_rastOh well, the numbers in the OP are wrong, the Wii actually did 22k. And Wii didn't have 2 years of high volume sales, it was 7 months, and then it died for 4 months, then it had 5 months of revival. It's been having 11 months of poor sales since (Japan). So I'd still say it's a fad.

Lets not be fanboys as much as I hate the Wii we all know when the holidays come around it will be breaking record againWolfang07150k isn't breaking records, not even for the Wii itself, which had 250k in one week in 2007. 2008 sales are in general down from 2007. And 2009 sales are down by at least 80% from 2008 sales.
Looks like a normal sales curve for consumer durables to me.Since some of you desperately need visual representation, since you keep on with your "2 years of good sales!", here you have itFamiking
Looks like a normal sales curve for consumer durables to me. Not really, it tends to go like this. 1st Year - product launch, medium level of sales. 2nd Year - growing as it becomes more popular. 3rd Year - May or may not be peak year, product becomes vastly popular. 4th Year - if 3rd year wasn't peak year, then this is peak year. Almost everyone knows about it 5th Year - Decline/Saturation, Everyone owns one, sales go down. 6th Year - People look forward to next-gen console, although it still selling. Wii being the exception, goes like this. 1st Year - Introduction, huge sales. But crashes towards the end only to rise to the holiday season. Wii's peak year. 2nd Year - Sales down from last year with 2.9 million compared to last year's 3.6 million. Terrible holiday performance, AC and Wii Music flop. 3rd Year - Sales down 80% from last year. Wii's worst year so far.[QUOTE="Famiking"]

Your time tables are also suspect... I mean that might be true of other hugely successful consoles in the past, but that doesn't mean that those consoles behaved noramally.
Your only looking at Japan sales... The Wii hasn't started to decrease it's rate of sales globally yet...If this isn't the 100th time I stated this - this thread is about Japan, it's in the thread title. I can put it in Size 10 font in the OP if you like.GundamGuy0
If you want to discuss WW sales, then please help yourself and make your own thread.
Also, are you saying that every other consoles had abnormal sales, while the Wii is the only normal one? It's called a product life cycle, here's to put it simply
1. Introduction
2. Growth
3. Maturity
4. Decline
5. Death.

what you do not take into account is that this whole time the wii has been outselling the competition, yet you still ignore that fact even though it has been brought up many times. i can bring up percentages to spin this whichever way i want, but there is one fact that still remains: Wii outsells every other console

So the fad is over, but only in Japan... To put it simply, yes. Did I ever say otherwise? From what I've seen and heard, I think its safe to call the wii's sales dominance as a "fad"!
A good personal example that I've seen is a comparisonto a really old fad (tickle me Elmo)!
When that doll came out, during the holiday seasonall my Aunts got hyped up and ran out and bought one for all the little kids in the family. They played with it for a little bit and threw it in a closet somewhere.
I saw the same thing happen with the wii. When the holidays rolled around, all my aunts got hyped up and went out and bought them for the new little kids in the family, the kids played wii sports for a couple weeks, my aunts and uncles laughed and said how cute it was, and then they threw it in the closet.
That is what I call a fad!
Now I'm not saying the wii itself is a fad, I'm just saying its casual appeal and resulting sales are a fad! Same goes with wii fit!
Yes, I know the product cycle, your time table is what's off.... Not the stages, when you suggest they happen is what's wrong. Because when the stages happen vary from product to product.I agree that they do vary, but if the variance is not a good thing, then to hell with it.GundamGuy0
It most certainly isn't the "normal sales curve for consumer durables" you make it out to be.

It is actually. It has the slow start, then rapid growth, then declining growth of a typical consumer durables sales curve. So does this explain the Wii doing 20k while the PS2 was doing 50k at the same point? Hardly, especially given that now is the DS's saturation point, while the GBA was still alive and well back then.

contradictions are wonderful, arent they?
if there is a decrease in sales from lack of consumer interest, the Wii wouldnt MASSACRE the competition during the holidays, right? i mean, the consumers dont have any interest anymore, right?

No it explains it nicenly if you look at PS2 vs, GBA, and Wii VS DS. And it does explain why the Wii is doing 20k while the PS2 was doing 50... the PS2 wasn't as henderd by the GBA's market overlap, because it was smaller.Lack, not absence.[QUOTE="ogvampire"]

Yeah, especially sales in Japan where people go out and buy out every console in the country every time a Japanese game gets released. You look at Japanese game release dates and the sales numbers for consoles pretty much follow that exactly....What the heck is the debate about????I don't even know why people care about sales
