I saw your point, but you forgot the obvious distinction. iPod is popular, because it actually has a good amount of sales. Wii is not popular, because its sales are terrible. Just because it's beating it's competition which find it difficult to top 20k doesn't mean it's doing well, it means the competition is doing bad. Worldwide it's selling far more then the PS2. I know this thread is just about Japan, but come on. (The PS3 numbers aren't for comparison, I just needed to have a 3rd system.)
This is what your link told me: The Wii was popular, it was even besting the PS2. Eventually sales fell, and it fell behind the PS2. Fin. And I don't think I ever doubted the worldwide success of the Wii.
