yeah, cause thats the point i was trying to make... right

I saw your point, but you forgot the obvious distinction. iPod is popular, because it actually has a good amount of sales. Wii is not popular, because its sales are terrible. Just because it's beating it's competition which find it difficult to top 20k doesn't mean it's doing well, it means the competition is doing bad. It's Wii = Bad PS3 = Worse 360 = Worst not Wii = Good PS3 = Average 360 = Below Average.

Did you just call Wii sales bad? :|

http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?cons1=Wii®1=Japan&cons2=PS3®2=Japan&cons3=PS2®3=Japan&weeks=156

Selling nearly as much in Japan as the PS2.

http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?cons1=Wii®1=All&cons2=PS3®2=Japan&cons3=PS2®3=All&weeks=156

Worldwide it's selling far more then the PS2. I know this thread is just about Japan, but come on. (The PS3 numbers aren't for comparison, I just needed to have a 3rd system.)

This is what your link told me: The Wii was popular, it was even besting the PS2. Eventually sales fell, and it fell behind the PS2. Fin. And I don't think I ever doubted the worldwide success of the Wii.

[QUOTE="Famiking"][QUOTE="Zhengi"][QUOTE="Famiking"] Denial and having to reinstate myself a thousand times because of said denial >_>

But can it be denial if my scenario is true? Could it possibly be that you are wrong for thinking that mustard is called Grey Poupon in French? Could it be possible that the Wii isn't a fad?

I'd have to be convinced first - so far, all I get is people saying the same thing. Then I reply to the said "same thing", and then they say "it's beating the competition", and.........

I'm pretty sure that back in the day, people who thought the earth was flat instead of round were pretty stubborn in their belief. It took the Church almost 430 years to acknowledge Galileo's work as fact. So I doubt convincing you has anything to do with them being right.

There was a long period where PS2 sales were behind Wii sales. So PS2 "fin"? And no, those are good sales for Japan.

are we even looking at the same graph?

it shows the steady incline of the wii, with a spike here and there, just like the ps2

I love how the thread title changed when the media create numbers came out lol. That alone invalidates the whole thread. Anyway, how is the fad over? Its selling average now and the fad has been confirmed over? In like a month or so, everything will be back to normal and people will deny this ever happened. I'll wait for monster hunter and tales of Grace to ship before making a decision but for right now, the only thing that can be certain is that this thread shouldn't exist.

reality check: no, it means the japanese people are not buying consoles... they are buying alot more handhelds

i love your logic: the wii isnt popular, its competition is just doing bad...

thanks for the laugh

You've done a good job of showing correlation but you've failed with the causation because you've not provided any real ansers as to why it's like this.

I say it has to do with the DS dominating the Japanse Market... and coruding out the consoles. Japanese gamers are happy with teh DS and it's RPG heavy line up, as well as it's solid general line up.

Famiking

Okay.

Running YOY:

2007: 218,725
2008: 273,048

2008 - 37,175
2009 - 99,072

I guess the charts above completely nullify your last argument.

If the DS killed the Wii, why didn't it kill the PS3 and 360 to the same extent?

That's just it... it's not selling bad now... just average... As if the fad is over when it stops having the ridiculous sales it had before and moves to just having average sales.

Because the DS is a better substitute for the Wii then it is for the PS3 or Xbox360.

The PS3 and Xbox360 are feeling the effects too, they are performing worse then expected.

So you admit it didn't the console market, it only killed the Wii?

Either way - I don't think this nullifies the arguement that the Wii is a fad.

Tell me how this makes the fad over all of a sudden? The other consoles have sold worse than that and they are fine. No a better question, who cares whether the fad is over or not when its still selling fine and it hasn't received one system seller yet this year? No, an even better question, why is japan (the smallest of the 3 markets) deciding whether or not the fad is over?

It's above the PS2's average.

What year are you talking about? Looking at the 2001, 2002, 2003 Jim provided, the only low sales period PS2 went through was the first year when it had massive shortages, so much so that it sold 4k in one week. After that, the PS2 never went below 30k.

No, but the Wii was below the PS2s sell though earlyer too... people called that the end of the fad also. There is the possibility for these sales to pick up again.

Yes... that's not an average number. and this 22 isn't the average for the Wii either. The Wii is less constant with more ups and downs, so I would love to know what it's average is...

Yeah, it's quite hard to predict. Especially given that there was a period with high sales, and then a period of low sales. I would peg it at 30-40k, but it's dropping. But right now, it's around 20k.

That's a mighty statement to make considering your using a consoole that only sold 35000 with one of its system sellers out to prove the fad is over. Or the fact that you had the wrong numbers up when the conversation started aand had to correct them which hurt your arguement. Let's pretend 22K is bad for a sec, How does that prove the fad is over?

Short term yes. However you are using a short term average to do a long term forecast. Which isn't always sound.

The decrease in Wii sales is because of a lack of games. You yourself acknowledged this.

DS didn't kill anything, if it did, the PS3 and 360 would've got hit hard as well, but they went up, or went down very little. The truth is, the Wii sales are crap.

Then please do tell what the collapse in Wii sales mean, because everything everyone is pointing towards would mean that something should've also happened, which it didn't (citing the DS example here).

The decrease in Wii sales is because of a lack of games. You yourself acknowledged this.

Exactly, but only a few agree.

anyway, what is this magical point you are trying to make?

DS didn't kill anything, if it did, the PS3 and 360 would've got hit hard as well, but they went up, or went down very little. The truth is, the Wii sales are crap.

Compared to what?

Compared to its former sales (fad), and the PS2.

Then why are you calling it the end of a fad when you think that the sales decrease is for a completely different reason?

Depends what the winning movie is in terms of sales in the next movie generation :| The PS2 was compared to the PS1 was compared to the SNES was compared to the NES. Don't see why we should stop.

The PS3 and Xbox360 are going up because they had no where to go but up... they were abysmal prior to this. They haven't reached a saturation point were the sell though of the DS has a big effect yet. Because they are lower the effect is smaller, and is easyer to over come. It's an issue of magnatude.

Uh, that is the truth. No games means nothing to stimulate console sales. How does that mean the fad is over?

i suppose the iphone is a fad as well, i mean its recent sales are nothing compared to its launch sales, right?

same with music.... metallica's latest CD was a fad because its second week sales were nothing compared to its short-lived launch sales

this is your logic....

It is compared. You can't just single out one region where it's performing not too much below PS2 numbers and deem the console to be a failure (sales wise). Especially when there's a widely accepted reason: not as many games.

I doubt Wii's sales would cut by 60%, while the affect on the PS3 and 360 would be minimal, if not increasing their sales. Maybe if it were 20% then I'd agree.

[QUOTE="GundamGuy0"] Short term yes. However you are using a short term average to do a long term forecast. Which isn't always sound.

It's hardly even short-term anymore, it's been averaging 20k 3 months for the holiday season, and 3 months after.

It would be, but I'm comparing 140th week sales to 30th week sales, now if you can provide me an example where a console has failed heavily at fulfilling this duty, then I'd be surprised.

Your throwing words around like collapse. The sales fell, but I don't know that I would call it a collapse. It's your interpertation, that this represents the peak which you've not really justified, and can't just justify with numbers. You have to include an economic theory, or some theory as to why this is happening. Your theory is that people have lost intrest, but it seems that you draw that conclusion from the same information data. In other words your theory is tautologous, or impossible to prove, or argue.

In order to win this you need another soruce of eveidence, perhaps something showing it's not a media darling anymore, or that that favor has shifted to another product.

Did you switch to weekly sales like I asked? Wii is far below the PS2, and looking at the PS2 sales the coming weeks, the Wii will not hold up, and will fall further behind. It'll effectively break the chain of every generation attaining console growth.
