WHAT IS PIKMIN 3?
Pikmin 3 is the sequel to 2001's Pikmin, and 2004's Pikmin 2. The third, long awaited entry in Nintendo's real time strategy series will begin Nintendo's Wii U revival; the game is a unique take on the genre, in typical inimitable Nintendo style, and promises to expand upon the premise of the previous two games, owing to the extra power afforded by the Wii U.
In Pikmin 3, players take on the role of Captain Olimar, or his cohorts, on an alien, hostile planet, where they must use the indigenous life, dubbed 'Pikmin,' and control it in swarms in order to take out dangers and hazards and interact with the environment. There are separate Pikmin types, each with its own unique abilities- for instance, red Pikmin are immune to fire- and swarms of each must be used properly in order to achieve anything.
ABOUT PIKMIN 3
- Pikmin 3 expands on the gameplay and conventions of the series dramatically- for example, the game will allow players to control three separate groups of Pikmin under three different captains independently and simultaneously, up from only two of the previous game. The game will allow for fast switching between captains to make them work simultaneously and overcome environmental hazards and puzzles
- Pikmin 3 introduces at least two new Pikmin types- the grey, Rock Pikmin, which can smash through hard obstacles like rocks, ice, and the pink, winged Pikmin, that can carry loads airborne, and also offer new avenues of attack against the enemy to the player.
- The time limit from the first Pikmin game returns in Pikmin 3, although notably, it is more flexible this time around. Players can prolong how long Captain Olimar and Co can survive by recovering fruits for them, which gives them sustainence enough to survive. The experienced player can finish the game in thirty in game days, although for the new, inexperienced player, the game can be extended to up to hundred in game days.
- Pikmin 3 allows for three separate control schemes: Wii U Pad, Wii U Pro, and Wiimote+Nunchuk. In all three modes, the Wii U Pad acts as an overhad HUD of the environment.
- The combat system has been revamped- unlike previous games where combat consisted mostly of throwing Pikmin at enemies, the new mechanics are deeper and a lot more strategic. Enemies must now be analyzed, and the proper Pikmin must be used in an appropriate manner to bring them down (for example, a rocky enemy should be attacked top to bottom). Enemies also react differently based on where they are attacked; to accompany all of this, the player must also, at all times, keep track of how many of each type of Pikmin he or she has in a given group at a time, and how many of each type are slated for attacking.
- Multiplayer modes return in Pikmin 3, with two separate kinds of multiplayer options.
GAME MODES IN PIKMIN 3
In addition to the main campaign, there are two different modes available to the player in Pikmin 3: Mission Mode, and Bingo Battle.
- Mission Mode is the renamed Challenge Mode from Pikmin 2, which gives the player specific objectives within specific parameters to solve. Each challenge or mission takes around 10 minutes to complete. The different kinds of challenges include Collect the Fruit, Battle the Enemies, and Boss Rush.
- Bingo Battle: Bingo Battle mode is Pikmin 3's version of the 2-P Battle Mode from Pikmin 2. In this mode, Two players, who play as Alph and Olimar, are each given a bingo card filled with enemies, fruit, and marbles. The players must strategically find ways to not only collect the items needed to make a bingo, but also to ensure their opponent cannot win.
REVIEWS
METASCORE: 88
Telegraph: 10/10
"Denser, deeper and more intricate than its predecessors, its a sequel that understands refinement isnt simply a case of adding more, even if its arguably as generous and complete a package as weve seen from Nintendo in a while. Yes, its a game about multitasking, forward planning and time management, but its also a game where you command sentient carrots to headbutt a crawfish to death. Ah, the joy of simple pleasures."
Eurogamer: 9/10
"What's most striking, though, is that Pikmin still feels like strategy seen with fresh eyes - strategy, perhaps, by designers who were unconcerned with labelling, and just let their ideas lead them where they wanted to go."
GamesRadar: 9/10
"Pikmin 3 is a game about nature, just as it always has been. But on Wii U its so believable it often feels like youre sitting in a real garden, playing with ants and beetles in dappled sunlight. Despite the macabre undertones of the cruelty of nature, the game is charming, funny, and utterly captivating. It is without doubt yet another Miyamoto masterpiece, and one that the Wii U desperately needs."
XGN: 9/10
"Call them your slaves, minions, little kids or whatever. Pikmin are there to help you. Together you will explore a beautiful game. The best Wii U title to get, its got a huge x-factor."
SpazioGames: 9/10
"Nintendo shows the meaning of the so called "Nintendo Difference" in this colourful, lovely and charming experience. Pikmin 3 won't probably be enough to save Wii U, but it's surely a huge leap in the right direction."
games(TM): 9/10
"These additional modes are a lot of fun, providing as they do bite-size portions of Pikmin action that you can enjoy with a friend, and definitely give you a reason to keep coming back to the game. But honestly, the campaign has so many nooks and crannies to explore and hidden fruit and data files to find that once youve reached the end of the story youll want to jump back in straight away."
Edge: 8/10
"Familiarity is both the worst and best thing about Pikmin 3. Twelve years after the original and nine after the sequel, little has changed but little really needed to. It may not sell systems on its own, but its a fine addition to a sparse software library that brings one of Nintendos most vibrantly characterful series into the HD era and, critically, makes convincing use of the GamePad."
Gamespot: 8/10
"There's nothing quite like Pikmin out there, and its delightful combination of survival strategy and unflinching cuteness should entertain you throughout this lengthy adventure."
