The whole "we need new consoles now" is just an excuse..

to be lazy as ****.I mean seriously people;what will a new console do that we dont already have BESIDES better graphics?

When developers want to get lazy and dont want to think of anything new they start covering up by screaming "we need new consoles".Bringing out new consoles wont solve anything;there is plenty of stuff developers can still do with the PS3/X360.I mean sure these consoles might be peeking but who gives a ****?I play games to have fun not to just look at the graphics.(not to mention the graphics in new games that come out these days for the PS3/X360 still wow me)

Yeah, but this console generation is ancient, almost 6 years old and developers are having a hard time optimizing these said games to still 'wow' you, millions of dollars and time wasted. With more 'free space' to work on the devs wouldn't have such a hard time optimizing the games, as another guy said in another topic.

Its time for a new gen. And hopefully the death of mediocre, linear, gray and bland shooters, and something new to kick it in popularity.

I care. Lots of people care. This gen is 6 yrs old. Time to start thinking about moving on.

The graphics may wow you, but they sure are hell don't wow me. Struggling for 30 fps at 1280x720 isn't exactly what I like to play at. Just get a paper route this summer and you can buy a $400 system easy next year year if need be. That's what I did before I grew up.

Well, you're gonna need it sooner or later :P. Seriously though, I agree. New systems aren't getting any cheaper each generation, and I don't see how games can get any more advanced other than better graphics (nowdays, this gen just seems more convenient more than innovative).

Graphics immerse you more (though a story, pace and atmosphere is unrivaled), and everyone loves eye candy, so do I. That's not a big deal.

What is a big deal is wen you let graphics influence what ever you may judge, without giving it a try. That's a point were you should quit gaming in general, for ever.

I can tell you now... After getting a 50 inch 1080p TV... You can really see how bad these games look now a days. Games that looked really good on my 32 inch LCD now look like poo up-scaled and displayed on 18 extra inches of screen.

The compression of the videos for games is also horrible to look at. PS3 does a better job because it uses blu ray.

It's been time to move on for the past 2 years now.

That's why i play older consoles on a SDTV. Looks good, it's cheap, and if i want.. well, 'real life' graphics, i'll game on my PC and my 24" monitor.

Um duh. If I didn't care about graphics, I wouldn't have built a gaming PC, bought a 360 at launch or moved on from my Atari.

I've had this graphical fieldity give or take for 6 years now. It's time to move on.

You really think that devs are suddenly going to make something amazingly innovative gameplay wise when they can barely scrape by with the output were getting on these dinosaurs? Look at the backlash Crysis 2 on consoles gets.

If the devs have more horsepower to pull off the graphics, that leaves them more time to make new assests and perfect gameplay instead of optimizing for a 2005 era mid range PC.

larger areas, more onscreen enemies, better physics calculations, better framerates just to name a few.

all those are important to me and have nothing to do with looking better.

besides, hardware cost is a drop in the bucket compared to software costs so i would rather play my games on a more powerful console.

GTA IV ran with like 20 fps at times on the consoles, and it was a blurry jagged mess. They maxed out the consoles, there and then. GTA V should have been a next gen game...but because these consoles overstay their welcome, we will get a game that either looks the same, or is less open and looks better.

I want the gen to last a good while longer(coulpe to 3 years), I'll get better value for $ on my pc if I don't have to upgrade it soon (not sure that I would all if rushed...). Next gen graphics won't be enough of an improvement if we rush imo, we wont be able to see something like the Samaritan demo as gameplay 'til the next, next gen.

Wouldn't it be cool if consolers moved to pc? Then we'd not have to worry about graphics not being pushed anymore 'cause of dated hardware, and rushing to a new 'gen' wouldn't cause us to have another 5 - 8 years of hardware stagnation.

Ok im not too tech savy but how did Rockstar max out the consoles with GTA4 when games like Gears 3,LA Noir, and Uncharted **** on GTA4s graphics but they yet to max out consoles?

Scale, Those games are practically a corridor compared to GTA, well, not Noir, but it's not insanely pretty anyway, still rockstar's engine seems to make terrible shading on characters.

None of these games has the openness of GTA IV, which was a huge ***** city, with a lot of cars, pedestrians and physics on screen. GTA V should have been to GTA IV, what GTA IV was to San Andreas. But it won't be that way, it will only a little better, if they cut back on scale, like Mafia II. Mafia II might have been open world, but there was never any **** scale, just small roads and you're surrounded by buildings everywhere.

Graphics are the least of my concerns (except for jaggies, I hate them with a passion). Scale and performance are key.

The thing that many people are missing is how much of a need is there for a next gen console. Sure the games could be better, but lets be real, we can say that every year for new hardware. But the need for a new console is definitely not as much as the need for a new one last gen to this current gen.

the truth is that these consoles have very old hardware. i have a crappy 32tv full hd for 5 years now and i still havent seen a good game(not tetris or psn/live games) that plays in 60fps 1080p ,why? because the consoles cant handle it,so in my book consoles of this gen havent age up that well.check gears1 and check gears3 the difference is minimal ,these consoles have nothing to give in terms of power anymore.

after uncharted3 i dont think we will see better games in the teq department and face it it matters.

Haha, no. In RDR all you did was ride horses in small towns, in GTA IV you drove trough a big open city with tons of cars and pedestrians.

How big it is, it doesn't matter, the pop-ins in RDR were insane, and you only rode horses, in GTA IV you drove cars at high speeds.

There is no magical way that graphics got better, it's just a game on a smaller scale.

With more 'free space' to work on the devs wouldn't have such a hard time optimizing the games, as another guy said in another topic.

Its time for a new gen. And hopefully the death of mediocre, linear, gray and bland shooters, and something new to kick it in popularity.

Shirley with the extended generation, production costs are decreasing, and the devs can take more risks with original ideas? If we jump to next gen, the bland corridor shooters will just become more common.

It's more than just graphics.

console gamers are moaning that DICE are limiting the number of players in BF3 online, or that the game environments are too small, or that the physics engine is too primitive.

That ALL boils down to technical limitations. Generational advancement is so much more than about graphics.

How exactly does that work?

Costs rise => limited budget => minimise costs => play safe => Focus on pretty graphics and the graphics whores will flock => Sure, they'll be technically better corridor shooters, but corridor shooters none the less. As this gen continues, graphics improve less and less = > need soemthing else to grab peoples attention => ie something unique => Innovation => May work, may not, but production costs much lower, risk is manageable. When the tools available are limited, you ahve to be more imaginative to convey your ideas. Much more impressive than simply relying on technology.

Well, for one thing, they already have their engines ready, so they don't need to spend time and money developing them for new consoles. There's also the familiarity with current consoles architecture. They'll constantly be finding better shortcuts etc that will save time and money for new projects. I don't work in the game industry. Perhaps you're right. Perhaps costs don't decrease. But that seems pretty unlikely to me.

yet it has been nothing but graphics and every game having online mp. there has been very little innovation and many ps2 games were better and are still better than new games once you get over the bad graphics.

The reason many games on the hi-def consoles are mediocre, linear, grey, and bland is because that's how they're designed and not because the available hardware can't support a different kind of game. You could give developers more powerful tech to work with, and they'd still deliver mediocre, linear, grey, and bland games simply because that's what sells.

More ram= bigger maps and more complicated gameplay less streaming....and console graphics are dated, they have actually stopped progress.

Metalscarz

There you go just thinkin about graphics. You will pay $400 just to look at something pretty smh

"We" move on to buy the new games, period.

I disagree with the people saying that it's time for new consoles because the current ones are 5/6 years old. 5/6 isn't exactly a long time and taking into account that a lot of people have only just moved into this generation within the past 2/3 years I don't think that they will want be buying a new console anytime soon. If you look at the current consoles the PS3 has another 3/4 years left in it, the 360 probably has 2/3 years left and there are already tons of rumours flying around about a new Nintendo console. The next generation will probably start in 2012 with the current HD console's successors coming a year or two later.

Sooner or later it's gonna hit people that graphics just aren't going to get that much better anymore like it has loads of other people. So yeah, no real point in releasing a new console for a minimal difference. Things like framerate and FPS will improve however.

You would be surprised. Look at how far they've gone now with gimped 7900 video cards. Even if they were to focus on GTX 460s solely, the visual difference would be MASSIVE. Even the best looking games for PC that came out when consoles released don't compare to how console games look now.

As far as i'm concerned this generation can last 5 more years. I don't want to be spending money on new consoles any time soon.

I want a new gen, because I think the tech part need to move forward. It's amazing what developers can achieve (they're not lazy lol). But we are not anywhere near photorealism. Characters look like cartoons etc. Some developers, like Crytek, are clearly held back and forced to cut things like the size of enviroments etc. You can say that graphics shouldn't matter, but the consumers disagree and devolopers are forced to make bad priorities.

[QUOTE="campzor"]werent ubisoft one of the publishers that said that we need new consoles? they probably want new consoles to launch more crappy launch titles on them

YEAH!!! it speaks to the TC point about laziness. You want cutting edge graphics then get a PC! Leave us to have a decent length for this gen to get some more value out of our investment and some leverage for better more creative games.

Some here must be this gen sheep or something if you think new more powerful consoles have in the past & will in the future only offer shinier visuals - that's far, far from reality. :P

That said, bring on the new consoles holiday 2012 cause this gamer will be more than ready. :D

Consoles are roughly 5 year old tech now, a very limited amount of ram, "we need new consoles" because they keep holding the PC back with multiplats. :|

Well, you're gonna need it sooner or later :P. Seriously though, I agree. New systems aren't getting any cheaper each generation, and I don't see how games can get any more advanced other than better graphics (nowdays, this gen just seems more convenient more than innovative). DethSkematik
Agreed. And the graphics on my PS360 are good enough for me, at the moment. I dont often get "wowed" by graphics anyway.
