And might I add a very narrow view of what Americans are.

Actually, xbox live is both more feature oriented and more secure than the PSN network in it's entirety. This is becaause of the money MS put into it and the money they keep putting into it, which is paid for mostly by ads, and slightly by gold membership fees. Technically, the principle of it means nothing because you should be paying for that service and security.[QUOTE="peterw007"]
It's the principle of the matter.
We PAY MONEY right into Microsoft's wallet for the right to use Xbox Live.
Having any kind of ads...even if relatively unobtrusive, is just unjust an business practice.
Either they rise the costs of subscription, or they offer tiered prices: a "Cheaper with ads," and an "Ad-free" model.

Hell, PS3 can't even do cross game chat or changes users without exiting the game completely.
No, you're paying for Facebook and the ability to play online. It's a waste of money. The PS3 dashboard is advertising games and music they you can actually buy on there, the 360's has a car advertisment. How can people not see the difference.
Also you pay for Xbox Live, thats the main issue in the first place. Your paying to see advertisments. The PS3 you are not.
The good thing about the new update is that apparently there is no spotlight section anymore (at least that is what Brad was saying on the Giant Bombcast). Also he thinks the new dashboard is almost as snappy as XMB which is another plus. I'm glad they're continually improving it.
The ad's on PSN advertise things you can get through PSN. A lot of the ads on the 360 Dashboard are random and unreleated.
Ads should never bee on the console anyway, especially one that requires you to pay for online play. And no point in bringing the Playstation in this, you can turn off those ads.
People need to stop being so willing to take everything from these companies and getting mad at other people.
I guess that 9.5 for Gears 3 must have gotten to them. Cows are now losing sleep, and falling out of beds dripping in sweat.
[QUOTE="Heil68"]Pay to have online then have ads shoved down your throat, sounds about right for MS. OhSnapitzHave free online then have ads shoved down your throat.. oh and have your cc information compromised, sounds about right for Sony. :| You can turn off ads on 360, and no info got stolen.
Cant you turn them off on the PS3 ?
GTSaiyanjin2
You can turn "What's New" (the tab/selection that TC is showing) off under System Settings.
There is still Games and Movies PSN spots underneath both Games and Movies XMB columns respectively that advertise games and movies found on the PSN.
In all fairness, there is no reason to be on the XMB; it's a basic home screen that doesn't really have much relevance, so the bare minumum ads that there are, are hardly a bother. On the other hand, the 360 dashboard is a media hub, so the ads are going to be more intrusive.
I don't remember finding the ads to be too bad on either though tbh, i think you're nit-picking.
i dont even notice them to be honest. the portions of the dash that i frequent has absolutely no ads at all so i dont care. ironic that as soon as you turn on the ps3 though it comes up to the whats new icon with scrolling ads........wierd aint itslvrraven9
It doesn't come up on mine since I have it disabled.

i would but sometimes i see the daily deals and it kinda pays off on the new games or some old games that they drop the price on. of course theres always the banner at the top right corner that displays "new things" also..Then there is the counter-argument that one could just set the 360 to auto-boot a game when it is turned on, negating the need to even visit the dashboard.foxhound_foxWhat if people don't want to play their games immediately.
Then there is the counter-argument that one could just set the 360 to auto-boot a game when it is turned on, negating the need to even visit the dashboard.foxhound_foxIt's a terrible counter argument mainly because to do anything aside play your games you need to run around in the dashboard. It's a silly argument but people have a point. I pay my cable provider to access their services, I do not pay them for adds, nor do they make profit from adds. Microsoft makes people pay to access their services, and also pockets the advertising dollars.
Ironically, my OP was originally a response to someone complaining about it in another thread, which prompted me to make this post. I just thought it deserved a thread of its own.You know, I never see anyone complain until a thread like this is made.

What if people don't want to play their games immediately.White_DreamsSuck it up and ignore the ads like the rest of us? There have been a couple times where a dashboard ad has brought me to a XBLA game I didn't even know existed... and the only ads I generally see are the ones telling me to upgrade to Gold for a certain amount of money for a certain period of time. If the dashboard ads get to people, I'd hate to see what would happen to them walking out into a street in a downtown area.

I also think that the constant and lengthy PS3 updates I have to endure when signing on to PSN greatly outweigh the time spent avoiding ads on the Xbox 360 dashboard.lamprey263Strong THIS. Possibly strongest "THIS" ever. Game updates on PS3 are hell.

I hope the new update allows one to auto boot to netflix or another app he or she frequents a lot. I know Brad was talking about how they finally allowed apps such as Netflix, ESPN, etc... to be counted under the most recently played section in the quick launch tab. No more long scrolling to he bottom of the list of games and apps will be awesome.

Agreed. Not only on sytem updates, but also game updates. Two 600+ MB updates for Resistance 3 within the first week it released is riduculous. On top of that, the updates can't even be performed in the background.

But for the most part they are usually ads for cars and drinks and tv shows, I don't see why i should just ignore a bunch of panels persuading me to buy things on a console, that's BS to me.

But it's nothing new, people pay a ton monthly for a SKY TV subscription and still have to put up with long (sometimes longer than terrestrial TV) commercial breaks.
And in comparison you can actually ignore these Xbox squares.
you pay money for cable. still have to watch commercials.[QUOTE="mems_1224"][QUOTE="peterw007"]

That's a bad analogy, because TV is a ad-supported industry.
The subscription you pay to cable goes to your service provider, while the ads go to the content provider.
With Xbox Live, the subscription + ads go to the same mega-corporation.
Not really, the BBC for example uses a licence fee and that pays for all the stuff they buy and produce.
It doesn't need to be, it's just more profitable to be.
I don't see why i should just ignore a bunch of panels persuading me to buy things on a console, that's BS to me.White_DreamsWell, ignoring them is a lot easier and less stressful than getting worked up over their being there.

Not true, you can navigate anywhere through the x live button on the middle of the controller. Even if your in a game, you can go anywhere else.

Exactly, I didn't know SF3 online was out the other day, until I saw the window. And it's so much fun, so i'm not gonna complain :P.
no you're paying for a better online experience. nowhere does microsoft say that live is ad freeThe PS3 dashboard is advertising games and music they you can actually buy on there, the 360's has a car advertisment. How can people not see the difference.

PtothaWHAT
Lets see the PS3 has 3 small windows in one of the sides, the xbox 360 has some much bigger windows which take allot more space,so in what other parts PSN has adds.? tormentosto compare, if i wait then those 3 windows become 9. if i scroll to the highlights then i see ads.........both can be avoided. ownage debunked.....
Exactly. I see maybe one "true" ad (like a contest or some car) on the dashboard. BTW, look at the Tha Carter IV ad on the PS3, did anyone get that album? I personally think Lil Wayne dropped the ball with this one, there's only like 2-3 good songs, the rest are sappy, pop crapFunconsolesadly thats the state of music today....

Let's not forget that Microsoft makes the most hacked OS in the world... point is, companies are always going to get hacked. And I don't think Xbox Live is as secure as a lot of people think it is. Is it more secure than PSN? Probably. Is is invulnerable? Definitely not.
