I don't understand.

So you want to buy your fancy smancy new iPhone/Ipod, you want to jailbreak it, so it can actually do something. Guess who was the first to do that? Oh same guy Geohot. Do you consider people who have a jailbroken iphone immoral? What about a rooted google phone like the HTC EVO, so you can put custom roms on it, and all the good stuff. Hell for Android, you don't even need root to install pirated applications.

Another example, the Logitech Revue. (I got mine free for being a google code dev :D, but say you want to root that. Say you want to watch your movies with DTS audio, or being able to visit websites that block your logitech revue's string agent because it's a google tv. Would you consider that evil? What's the difference? It's getting root access to the device, nothing more, nothing less.

Now for the PS3, what's so different here? He just gave root access to the device, to get you out of the walledgarden. He isn't the one condoning piracy, hell he isn't even a gamer.

So do you people think having less rights to the devices you own is a good thing?

1- I don't hate him, just think he's a jerk.

2- I don't even have an iPhone, so the first part of your post has failed on me.

3- Even if I did, it's not the same with the PS3. Jailbraking an iPhone doesn't affect other users, while the hacking of the PS3 has affetced many users.

Anyway, do you really think GeoHotz is that stupid and never thought his actions would have the effect they are having??

He's instrumental in all the PSN hacks on Call of Duty, and piracy, that's enough for me to dislike him.

 I wasn't expecting this from you JW! I don't think many people mind what GeoHotz did in terms of hacking, we all just hate how he opened it up for piracy. Devs aren't having a problem with piracy on iPhones even though it's huge around the world, but I think that they would care more if their multimillion dollar console game was pirated. Basically, we don't mind GeoHotz, we mind his decisions and pirates. Oh and the Killzone 3 demo sucked.

If you say, having root access on a PS3 means your going to pirate games, well that's the same as the above examples, and specifically the PC. You already have root access on your pc(assuming it's yours and not using some odd OS). Are you going to pirate games? What if you can only run programs that Microsoft lets you? Would you complain then? I am sure you would, and don't just say "the PS3 is a console", well what if the computer becomes a console? What is a console?

So do you people think having less rights to the devices you own is a good thing?

Eh, hacking doesn't mean pirating. So let's say your phone's/xbox 360's/ps3 OS gets corrupted, and you're out of warranty. And for some reason the only way to fix it is to JTAG your phone/360/ps3 and restore it, and you'd root it in the process. Is this evil? Your'e doing the same thing, roooooooting :P

Most people are just pissed off because their COD6 got hacked (even though it was hacked before Geohots cfw) (and as if infinity ward isnt to blame for having no security at all in their game) and they don't understand whats really going on here and what they stand to lose if Sony wins.

When i buy something it is for the intentions that it was made for. I don't buy something to turn it into other things. About 99% of an items consumers are the same way.

I don't care what someone wants to do with his/her own item they purchased though. What I do care, is that if that person's actions will hurt other people's enjoyment of an item. What Geohot did could hurt Sony huge in the long run, which could include loss of games, loss of funds, further loss of features. This could also have an effect on all the system manufactuers and publishers. If these companies can't protect these risky investments they may no longer take the risk. The consumers will end up with crappier products in the end.

The thing is though Geohotz knew what the outcomes of his actions would lead to. He is not the idiot that he likes us to think he is with his "I dun condone piracy" talk. Fact is that.. piracy is illegal and geohotz showed the pirates how to go most of the way. He knew someone would figure out how to enable piracy, yet he still released the information publicly for his E-fame, he was being extremely reckless as to his actions and he knows it.

So let me get this straight.

-You refuse to believe that he made CoD games worse.

-Every 7-11 is at fault for its robberies because secruity isnt good enough. (Same logic)

-and this is all a noble crusade beyond anything we could possibly phathom.

None of the cod hacks need cfw. They are all just save game hacks. They were out well before geohot released anything.

The only thing he's trying to do is seek attention. The iphone's app store is a closed system that isn't based on physical media. It's not a physical media device in a threatened industry. He doesn't even play games? I respect him even less.

He's just a famewhore.

I'm no tech expert, but if I understand correctly what he has done is the foundation for piracy and online cheating on PS3? That's two things that threaten my gaming experience (long and short term). I don't understand those who want to see him dead, that's waaay out of proportion. But he has caused me and many others grief for exhibitionist reasons and I don't like it.

He released a spoofed master key, he kept the real thing for himself to avoid piracy. It's honestly the only reason the PS3 isn't wide open yet. Programmers can't get root access on the system.

If someone told you to go buy them a gun because they want to kill someone and you do it, you are an accessory to the crime and can be jailed. Geothot knew that once the jailbreak was done it could open up piracy and hacks.

He didn't fire the gun, but he bought and loaded it.

Personally I don't hate the guy, I would rather hate on people that are effecting my personal life. However I have a stronge dislike for this attention seeking ***** what he has done has possibily open the back door for people to pirate the PS3 and in the long term this will effect developers for the PS3.

PS Even if i had an Iphone I wouldn't jailbreak it anyway.

Seeing as sony removed OtherOS and other features that defeats the point of buying a product for what it can do if a company can easily remove it. What geohot intended was for these features to be used once again not piracy or hacks :S

Please explain? There are irc logs of other "hackers" cursing his name for blocking piracy from them. You like most people in the thread have no clue. You simple hear hacker and think cut his head off.

Wrong analogy.

A better analogy is this.

Someone hacks a video game console, posts how to do it online, now everyone knows how to steal games and ruin online gameplay.

Much better analogy.

And for some reason the only way to fix it is to JTAG your phone/360/ps3 and restore it, and you'd root it in the process. Is this evil? Your'e doing the same thing, roooooooting :P

People who pay $90 a month for smart phone fees are just throwing their money down the toilet, so I don't use them. If my console goes bad and is out of warranty, I go buy another one.

Frankly I'm sick of hearing about George not so Hotz and everything to do with him. I think it's pathetic that people idolize such a shady character in the first place. Find someone worthy to obsess over I say.

If I buy a product, it's because I'm impressed with what it does, not because I am excited for what I can make it do.

The ps3 has more functionality than any other system as is.

And, he's a jackass.

Don't expect everyone to be as unimaginative as you are.

What extra things can u do with a hacked PS3 that u can't do with a PC? I don't see how it could lead to any creativity what so ever.

What if you want to make your PS3 your computer?

Do you jail the gun store owner for the gun he sold that ended up killing someone? If not how is this any different?

Wrong analogy.

A better analogy is this.

Someone hacks a video game console, posts how to do it online, now everyone knows how to steal games and ruin online gameplay.

Much better analogy.

Yet another uninformed poster. Actually read up on what the guy did and didn't do before you run his name through the mud.

Sushiglutton

He's as much responsible for piracy and online cheating as Microsoft and other software companies are when people makes trojans or computer viruses for their OS/programming language.

I don't hack into stuff, I don't jailbreak, I buy a system and pay for games on it, just like I'm supposed to LEGALLY. There is no need to change a system's OS. I have no sympathy for attention ****** or hackers.

Thanks to jailbraking the iPhone you don't have to pay those fees. You can use any service you want. Including prepaid services.

Uh, he isn't making viruses lol, or if you want to consider his way to get root a virus, then ok you have a point. However, that "virus" is for your own system, not anybody else's. Hell you need physical access to use it, not much of a virus is it now?

He isn't even close to responsible for PS3 piracy. Did you even have any clue that piracy was rampant on the PS3 months before geohotz cfw? I bet you didn't.

I'd say that would be a pretty lame computer. Really I like my Ps3 but beyond playing games and watching Blu-rays it has no use that a 7 year old computer can't do better.
