your quoting failed :)

And really..what's the point of that question anyway? It will only lead to yet another silly Valve vs Bungie flamewar. People like both because they like their games, that's it, nothing more.

Quoting fail? I don't know what you are taking about.. ;)

So if it just comes down to personal preference, whats' the point of even discussing whether or not games are influential? Or, do you just not know how to explain the influence Valve and their Half-Life series has had on the industry?

But since you've asked

And how did Valve influence things? You can see their influences in pretty much every FPS right now, they've pioneered the FPS storytelling, scripted interactive sequences, made modding what it is today, spearheaded the Digital downloads revolution etc.

I also see Bungie's influences on the genre, except unlike Valve's they're all bad and just made the genre worse (I'm confident that for the genre it would be far better if Halo never was made in the first place). I consider Halo to be the most overrated game of last generation personaly and that Bungie didn't make enjoyable game in decade. Well, that's my personal feelings about them only though.

I was hoping for specific examples. And storytelling? I laughed out loud...

It's always a bit pointless, but the difference is that this isn't Valve vs Bungie thread , or one discussions qualities of their franchises, only influences many FPSes had on the genre. Thus it's not just pointless (which isn't bad as long as it's fun), but also off topic, which is bad :)

I was too slow with editing my previous post, so I will just repost the part about influence :)

I did give you specifics. And everytime you see a scipted sequence in FPS it's Valve's influence you're watching. And yes...storytelling methods in FPS is also their influence. Well..HL1 is, because while the recent Episodes have pushed the storytelling in FPSes to new heighs nobody has so far been able to come close to that, so I don't know about influence in this case.

I'm not a fan of the Half-Life series, but I have to agree with AdrianWerner on this one. The way Half-Life engrossed the player in 1998 was revolutionary for the first-person shooter genre. :?

That's fair, I just don't feel the same way. I never felt particularly engrossed, because I never felt a sense of purpose when playing any of the Half-Life games. I always felt that with games like Halo. If you want engrossing, I think Unreal is nearly as good as it gets (the original). Even now it's engrossing.

What's wrong with that? It's more epic than Half-Life's.

it was just meh in every way. Some of the worst level designs ever seen in FPSes, horribly enemies design (felt like pokemon FPS at times), hardly any variety, slow to the point of feeling like swinning in the jelo. Bassicaly felt like the whole game was you as some sort of fat kid running around cardboard enviorements shooting at foam monsters.

Plus not only it had weak story (that's not so bad, majority of FPSes, including orignal Half-life have weak storylines), but unlike HL1 the storytelling was also very bad.

I could aprecieate the MP, but SP was just plain bad to me

Halo 1's single-player was epic. :o Landing on the ring world on the second level and stepping out of the lifepod was like 'woaaah this is awesome'. It was a magical feeling. Too bad they haven't really been able to recreate it since, though ODST was a step in the right direction.
