So... does this mean we won't be seeing something beyond the "list filler" "it's sorta a core game" stuff for the Wii until 2010 from Nintendo? I lost faith after E3 2007 and E3 2008 - but I kept hearing "just wait, it's coming." Only, apparently, it's not coming anytime soon :|

-

I'm done being pissed, I'm simply tired of this. I recently found out I'll be getting a Wii gratis, it's in the mail to my house as we speak. I went through *every Wii game* looking for titles to stock my library with, and came up with half-a-dozen potential games, out of all of them, that meet my needs. And I'm not the only person left feeling this way...

Nintendo, you continue to disappoint me - you used to mean something with consoles - I think the reality has become this - if you're a Nintendo fan, and a serious gamer, buy a DS, the Wii will supposedly be enjoyed by your family and friends, but you're getting a long wait to have the kind of games you camp out for :/

SMG, MP3, SSBB, MKWii... Animal Crossing ... What other games do you want them to release?

I'm more worried about them just rehashing their core franchises than wether or not we see another Mario/Zelda/Pikmin/Metroid in the near future. So as long as projects like Metroid Dread are in the pipeline, I'm happy.

The day Animal Crossing, the worst iteration of Metroid Prime, the worst title in the Smash series, and Mario Kart are all modern Nintendo fans want is the day I give up on them entirely. Were you alive for the SNES? Do you own any other company's systems? Do you realize what experiences in gaming you're missing?

Yess I remember all the crappy games that used to plague Nintendo systems way back to thedaysof the NES(of which I still own one). Worst of each series is a matter of opinion, and you're opinion doesn't match a LOT of peoples opinions. I for one enjoyed SSBB completly, as well as MKWii. Not as much fun as Double Dash but still a great game. My questio9n is, were YOU alive during the NES days?

I haven't been playing my Wii a lot lately, but I still find it comforting sitting behind me on my TV stand. Knowing it's there means that when something is announced for it that gets me excited, I already have a Wii to play it on.

Plus, I simply can't get rid of it until I play Fatal Frame IV. :P

Yes, I was alive then.

You think the Wii is free of crappy games? That's laughable - what's noteworthy and concerning is that the systems main (and best) developer is stretched so thin and taking so long to deliver the meat that what used to be its strongest audience desires.

Never said the Wii was free of crappy games. Do you really expect Nintendo to release a core game every month? Every other month? How often should Nintendo plop out a 'core' game for you?

Never say never. When I was a kid, SEGA fanboys used to swear up and down that you would never see a Sonic game on a Nintendo system... oops. Nintendo characters were on the CDI and PC in the past - is it likely to happen again in the near future? No - but "ever"? We'll see.

Oh no, they're not rushing out games. :?

Half-a-dozen games? That's like a year's worth for me. Seems fine for a console you have so little hope for. Just wondering: How much did you expect?

It would be fine that they're taking so long if there were any worthwile games to tide over until then.

Also I just happened to notice that everyone who writes SW monhtly is a sheep. :?

But if you're serious, then good for you,but I still think it would be horrible only owning a wii this gen.

There are. If Sub managed to find a whopping half-dozen, the rest of us could find at least three dozen. :P

Seriously though, if you don't have the third-party support, you will inevitably run into a drought. Not much Nintendo can do about it, we just have to hope that the hint has been gotten and they take advantage of the opening.

As for Monthly, it was started by sheep, so yeah. We have a more diverse staff now though, and we're always looking for more.

how bout some frick'n new IPs for crying out loud.

is it the general consensus that all nintendo as a publisher and developer has to do is keep the same damn franchises on auto-pilot forever? should they just leave it up to the third parties to come out with the new stuff while they pump out sequels and exercise "games"?

I did not copy and paste anything. And I do not only own a Wii. I also own a DS and a PSP, both of which get considerable play time. But that simple list there interests me more than the entire 360 and PS3 libraries, which is why I own a Wii.

Would be nice, I get tired of EVERY generation Nintendo keeps the same IP's and NEVER EVER makes a new one. I loved playing Pikmin on my NES back in the 80's as an example.

Honestly what franchise does change this in a huge way?

Zelda: Save the princess

Mario: Kill Bowser

Games like Halo have continuous and interesting plotlines.

the notion that innovation within one franchise can be just as helpful for the industry as new ips is absurd. you don't need name recognition to sell games. you need good marketing. hopefully the game is good besides that.

by the way, when you mention the innovation within a frachise, is that actually happening with the nintendo stable? did this zelda innovate or was it simply executed well? how bout mario kart? a number of magazines said the best way to play it was with a gamecube controller.

Then not much is.

Fine, Sunshine to Galaxy = quite some change there. Focus of game completely changes. Galaxy easily could have been a new IP.

I don't see why not. Super Mario 64 set the bar and was incredibly innovative even though there was plenty of Marios before. Or, the perfect example--GTA3.

Once again, Galaxy could have been a new IP, and MKWii certainly wasn't a rehash. (I don't see how the GC controller could be better, the Wheel works perfectly aside from an annoyance when you have to hold an item behind you.)

how bout some frick'n new IPs for crying out loud.

is it the general consensus that all nintendo as a publisher and developer has to do is keep the same damn franchises on auto-pilot forever? should they just leave it up to the third parties to come out with the new stuff while they pump out sequels and exercise "games"?

surrealnumber5

We really need a copy-paste reponse for this. >_>

Why can't you innovate within the franchise and keep the name recognition?

because people that post things like that only play games like halo 1,2,3 where nuthing major changes and so its assumed sm64 sms and smg are all the same game this can be said about zelda metroid pikmin battalion wars smash bros or any other nity game

i've just been generalized!

i'm not going to run you through my gaming history, but i will say that i've played the last three zelda games (their fun, but it has been the same formula over and over. i could say the same thing about halo). besides that, i prefer rpgs and strategy games over shooters.

am i really being attacked for asking for new games? that really is too much to ask from nintendo?

Actually no, I have games I am waiting on, starting in a next month or so. So not in 2 years, but pretty soon.

No, see, you're getting new games, but you're too hung up on names. That's the problem.

So does the PS3 and 360.

Prince of Persia is a new game, Burnout Paradise is a new game, Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction, GT5 (online is new), Halo 3, Forza 2, MGS4 and Resistance 2 is all new games that changed thing just as much as Nintendo games had changed this gen to call them new games like you do.

He is not talking about games that does something new and unique in a franchise but a whole new franchise.

the notion that innovation within one franchise can be just as helpful for the industry as new ips is absurd. you don't need name recognition to sell games. you need good marketing. hopefully the game is good besides that.

by the way, when you mention the innovation within a frachise, is that actually happening with the nintendo stable? did this zelda innovate or was it simply executed well? how bout mario kart? a number of magazines said the best way to play it was with a gamecube controller.

Tsug_Ze_Wind

I don't see why not. Super Mario 64 set the bar and was incredibly innovative even though there was plenty of Marios before. Or, the perfect example--GTA3.

your right about gta3. i can't comment on galaxy.

my point isn't simply innovation. its new settings, new stories. how cool would it be if nintendo came out with an all new adventure. build a new universe that many different types of games could be set in.

"we are sorry about [the e3] media briefing, specifically for those who were expecting to see Nintendo show something about super mario or legend of zelda." - Satoru Iwata

nintendo thinks that all core gamers want from them is the main franchises. that won't change any this gen.

Of course you can call them new games--they are. I'm not a guy that rips on sequels unless they're actually decreasing in quality.

New settings = Wind Waker's The Great Sea, (again) Galaxy's various galaxies are fine examples. It doesn't take a new IP to have different settings or stories.

All it is, is a name. It shouldn't matter at all.

calling out concerns you have for a company that you used to respect more is not being a fanboy, let alone rabid.

yes, they came out with new core games last gen. and yes, they've put out a bunch of games that start with wii this gen. if you like those games then i'm happy for you. i'd prefer something with more substance to it.

that would be like saying it would be fine to have nothing but star wars science fiction instead of numerous franchises, why have genres with different ips? instead of lots of different mob movies, i'd just assume have nothing but godfather movies. each could have a different setting or plot line and its the best so why not?

while i did take that to the extreme, that is where your concept logically progresses. it does make a difference to have a new ip, instead of playing as link or mario again. not saying they shouldn't make those games anymore. just start something new.

Make gamers suffer while they increase their install base.

A huge base of casual gaming Wii owners who won't play these games when they arrive.

Worse yet they'll alter the games in order for them to appeal to this new following.

Whatever they decide to do they know we'll be there to buy it in the end.

Nintendo understands that they can get away with abusing the real fans.

If all space-related science fiction was written by Lucas, why not put it all under "Star Wars?" I don't see anything wrong with that.

They could make a Zelda game without playing as Link. they'll probably make a new IP before they do that, true, but there's a lot more space in these franchises than you think.

It would be fine that they're taking so long if there were any worthwile games to tide over until then.

Also I just happened to notice that everyone who writes SW monhtly is a sheep. :?

stepat201

Bingo on both comments, though the reality of SW Monthly is frankly far more sinister. In any case, that's not the topic at hand. Nintendo's icy relations with third parties, and failure to pursue them (or frankly care greatly about what their lack of high-budget third party titles means for core gamers) certainly makes the situation.

-

List.famicommander

95% list filler :/ - posting in that format is only used to make it so it takes *forever* to go game by game and address quality issues - the reality is, I'm sorry if that's genuinely what you've bought this generation, your money, in my opinion, could have been better spent.

As for Monthly...

Tsug_Ze_Wind

Please refrain from recruiting, discussing, or advertising SW Monthly in my thread - one comment on it is fine, any further is hijacking. It's a stickied thread and your signature provides appropriate links.

this discussion has pretty much hit a brick wall so i'm going to bed. its cool to disagree though. its just video games.

[QUOTE="stepat201"]Honestly what franchise does change this in a huge way?

Zelda: Save the princess

Mario: Kill Bowser

Tsug_Ze_Wind

Game: Beat game.

Just a tad too generalized. :? SMB to SMG must have had some innovation in there somewhere.

The experience has evolved far too little compared to what the cusp of modern art-gaming can offer, in terms of experience, impact on the player, intellectual stimulation, visual appeal, auditory enticement, and the enhancement of the gamer via the act of gaming.

At best the Wii offers "amusement" - it lacks edification.
