You can now buy weapons and cosmetic hats for real money from the Valve store. Valve has finally fallen to the level of Activision.

You guys do realize all items in the shop can be obtained through gameplay and from the looks of the stats don't give much of a significant advantage. Valve has also promised that they will never charge for maps and free updates will continue to come.

It just getting the items without having to wait to get them when playing, so I think you can still get them without paying.

Yes but it was due to Micro$$haft's succes to capitalize on in that made it to a succes story today.

They weren't the first and they would not be the last.

It was bound to happen.

Hell, there's dozens of mmo's that have lived on this before the 360 was created.

For those who don't play 20 hours a week but still want the weapons... i think it's fine. It's not like they are charging you for you to get them, you can still get them for free. Herp derp everyone over reacting...

I remember the PS2 era, before the 360 came into play. Yes there were also xboxes but here in europe the xbox was for weirdo's. All the cool kids had an PS2. Nevertheless, the xbox was something you would play during a visit to a local game shop. It wasn't bad but it wasn't special either. Enter 360, exclusive DLC, exclusive this, timed-exclusive content, exclusive hairy ass. The 360 had it all. I had never even heard of DLC before the 360 entered. I knew that there were expansion packs to several games but those were in most cases entire games released at least a year after. I didn't know of microtransactions, sure they were there sinds 2000 maybe...but I was the most ghetto gamer of my hood and if I was the one to put the words on the streets. If I didn't hear of it, nobody would. But ever wondered how hitting rock bottom looks like? Well, BEM. Enter Avatar clothing and pets and whatnot.

the xbox had it, the Dreamcast had it, hell even the megadrive had it and many many PC games had it and thrived on it.

And last time I checked popularity and sucess are not directly tied to what you may or may not have heard. Also, no one is forcing you to buy Avatar stuff, in fact it was SONY who started that particular trend with a little something called Home

and on top of it all you completly dodged the argument I made on my previous post

You might think it's sad/weird, but here in Europe that was true. You didn't say ''I'm going to game so I can't play outside'', you said ''I'm going to PlayStation''. Yes we made an verb out of PlayStation :P I think the xbox was primarily for adult gamers back then because even back then parents were like...an x-box? What on earth is that? Forget that son, I'm getting you the real stuff; a playstation if you get good grades. And I'm not dogding your argument; I thought I acknowledged that DLC/microtrans. were before 360's appearance? Micro$$haft casualized and capitalized the concepts of paying more and more to get the full gaming experience.

We could spend all of well earned cash on furniture for our imaginary home on PSN or clothes for our avatar on XBL.

So how come people bash Fable 3 for this but its ok for VALVE to do it?

I felt a disturbance in the force. As if a million Valve fanboys suddenly realized Valve is not the Hippy Dippy company they thought, who does it all for the gamers because they love 'em. But a company after one thing: Money. Valve was, is, and always will be the same as EA, Activision, Ubisoft, and any other big name company.

I live in Portugal and yes, we made playstation a verd as well, with that said I never saw Xbox owners as weirdos, hell, I was actually envious of them, for starters their multiplats always ran better

so did $ony or have you forgotten about Home?

Moreso, last time I checked most of the DLC the 360 had at the time was created by third party companies, not by Microsoft.

and last but not least, you're not forced to buy DLC.

If DLC wasn't paid most likely it would not be done in the first place

From the FAQ:

Some items CANNOT BE FOUND OR CRAFTED.

So it isn't options. Some items will only have one option. Buy it.

Microtransactions aren't bad as long as they aren't expensive, and besides Valve is extremely generous with DLC. More than half of the content in most of their post launch DLC for most games was free.

Right people, you need to calm down. Look at it this way:

At first I was pretty disappointed by this apparent sell out behaviour but after a little think it is pretty obvious why they are doing it...

If trading was implemented without the option to buy things then people would head straight to ebay and start buying/selling things anyway, keeping valve completely out of the loop. As I believe happens in every online RPG ever.

Selling things officially is a way to put a price cap on things and stop trading sending everything all black market.

Besides, you can still craft all these items by using the usual 2 item community items method anyway. (http://www.teamfortress.com/mannconomy/FAQ/)

Yes, some people will just buy everything, but would you rather they did it via ebay or Valve?

Then read http://www.pcgamer.com/2010/09/30/interview-valve-on-why-theyre-selling-team-fortress-2-items-for-real-money/

Can I reverse my stance on TF2 > Halo Reach :P?

All joking aside, as long as most of items can still be found in the normal game I'm fine with it. Most of the update weapons in the game aren't that great so it's not that big of a deal to me.

I'd actually consider paying if it bypasses achievement requirements to unlock the special weapons, haven't been playing regularly so it'd speed things up.

They've put an enormous amount of work into post-release content without charging anything, so one can't feel too annoyed by this.

The update actually looks pretty nice, I might jump back into TF2 because of this.

I feel someone is going to make a bigger deal out of this than it should be. It's not like Valve set up the microtransaction shop 2 weeks after TF2's release. They can put up all the items that they want to sell on the shop, but guess what? As long as you have free will, you have the choice to buy an item or save your money for something else. There's no need to get upset. Don't make it seem like Valve is going to start charging $20 for map packs and updates.
