[QUOTE="MonacoX"]What exaclty are the benefits of a 20+ minute install? Load-times that are reduced by 2-3 seconds? Not that great if you ask me.SolidTy

Actually, from the Newest EGM I got yesterday, it was described as this :

PS3 = 0-2 seconds on some parts

360 = 3-10 seconds on some parts

Is that significant? You be the judge, but Installation is obviously a good thing.

If thats really the case, then I take back what I said.

Installing games isn't a problem what is a problem will be if I run out of HDD space.. I bought a 40gb ps3 about a week and a half ago and the drive is formatted at 37gb after installing UT3 I'm at 29gb left. The installation was optional but without the installation the game loads about the same speed as my ps1. I can get about 200gb drive for $120 but should I have to??The answer is no.. If games like UT and DMC eat up so much HDD space what's the future hold with those 50 gb blu-ray games that need to be loaded on the HDD:roll: .. looks like I'll be buying all my multiplatform games for 360.. I don't want to go through the trouble of uninstalling and reinstalling games, I want my library on my drive ready when I want.

To make up for the lackluster speed of the BD drive. But sh00sh..don't tell them that. It's fun to watch them damage control :P

Who's damage controling here? The ones with the installs, or the ones in fear of having made the wrong choice by going with the console with extra-long load times, and no standard HDD?

In all honesty though, its not that big of deal, Can't we all just get along? NO WE CANT! System Politics! hehe. No, but srsly, its not that big of deal.. yet. But if more games come out with huge installs, I'm going to be not-so accepting.

I hear Hot Shots Golf is possibly going to have a 5GB install as well... Which is just plain scary. I really hope this doesn't become a common trend.

lookout everybody, i'm about to destroy this thread with logic

-installs are optional, so you people who voted that they are bad thing are saying that options are bad

-a long initial wait is WAY WAY WAY WAY better than many short waits. Think of it this way: load times interrupt the game and happen regularly. An initial wait doesn't interfere with the game at all.

-since installing is an optional thing, if you do it, you know you're doing, so I doubt that many people will be surprised and upset that they have to wait. Plan around it. Like casey said there

I bought DMC for 360 because of the achievements. I also have a ps3 and can't remember which game was the last I had to install. It definitely wasn't Uncharted or R+C. Either way though lets do some math. If DMC4 has 20 levels and for arguments sake the 360 load times are 10 seconds (which they aren't, prob more like 5-7secs). That would be 6 levels per minute worth of loading. Overall 3 minutes and 20 seconds throughout the entire campaign, as compared to a 20 minute installation.

Im on the 5 th level and don't recall any loading between cutscenes.

What's the Deal with this thread and the ton of others like it? HDD installs are bad?!!

Why aren't we plagued with why the 360 doesn't come packed with Wifi, yet the 360 is supposed to be the leader of the internet?

Why aren't we plagued with Nintendo's Silly Online scheme, based mostly on selling us old games?

Actually for DMC4 , from the Newest Issue of EGM I got yesterday, it was described as this :

PS3 = 0-2 seconds on some parts

360 = 3-10 seconds on same parts

Is that significant? Gamespot and all other respected outlets have come to similar conclusion's. GS used the phrase, "NOTICIBLY REDUCED LOADING TIMES".

Lems, stop saying you only save 2 seconds, that's an outright lie.

Is this an issue to the multiplat owning gamer? You be the judge, but Installation is obviously a good thing.

SolidTy
Installing is a good thing...yeah, but with that much space to use? Not so much. What if you have less than 5gb in your PS3 harddrive, will you be able to actually play the game?

uMm look @ my sig..I own a PS3. However, i bought it for what it's worth...Exclusives & a BD movie player. You can snap on X360 for not having a standard HDD, but i haven't seen it hurt the X360 significantly, have you? If anything, snap on X360 for not having a nex-gen media format built in. Think about this though....If it had one, would we need a huge HDD like the PS3 for when devs feel the urge to make installs "mandatory" because the drive isn't fast enough? Capcom did what they did, so PS3 users wouldn't have to wait 20secs during loading. Everyone needs to use common sense around here. It's not like Capcom was like, Ooo thats cool...PS3 has a HDD standard, lets make them install 5gb of data just for kicks! kuku hahaha

It's similar to how the Ps3 fans complain about the 360 having no standard hardrive and how games run incredibly slower yet all it needs is a variable to be set and simple if and else statements to make it work with the harddrive cache which I am fairly certain many developers do.

It's funny. You minimized the 360 loading screen numbers, yet you kept that PS3 20 min install figure.

IN any event, there are Accomplishments, Leaderboards, and more in the PS3 version as well. Either way, If it's multiplat, I like to buy it on PS3 so I don't get another RROD(I'm on my 3rd 360, and I don't won't to burn this one out too fast).

Correct, but then you gotta factor in how many people will buy all the games with installations? Like myself... I don't plan on getting DMC4, and probably won't get Hot Shots Golf either, and I didn't get UT3. So I still have plenty of room left on my 60GB HDD for MGS4/KZ2/R2/LBP, and whatever else. It's just I hope this isn't really a big popular trend amongst PS3 games. I can see... maybe 1GB installs max, but anything more than that, and you're just asking a bit too much from your customers. 5GB is pretty nuts. But granted, it IS still pretty early in the PS3's life span, so let's give devs the bennefit of the doubt, and hope they figure out ways to get around having to install half the game, without us suffering with 360-like load times :P

No, of course not. People can't see it because there isn't enough to compare it too.

The SNES didn't have a HDD, did it hurt that either?

Right now, it's too early in the consoles lifespan to make such bold statements. Think about it.

I have a question about ps3 load times actually

can you erase the game from your harddrive but keep your save files? If you can't they should address that. It would be nice to be able to uninstall a game and still be able to play on your game

That would be a waste of time, any time anyone has done that for you, you just say, "Oh". It would be fruitless and waste both of our times. No matter what you learn, you are just going to believe what you want. We both know that. Just know that the "Blu-Ray drive isn't SOOOO SLOW" like you think.

No they are not mandatory, however DMC4 is making SW crazy because it is mandatory. So far, no other game is, and the few that have HDD install options allow you the choice.

*Also, one of this generation's best games graphically, and more, UNCHARTED, had no loading and NO Installs.

It all comes down to the developer*

No problem at all. Only problem i have is with mandatory installs like DMC4 (which is the only title at this point). Also, 5gb? That's just ridiculous and completely unnessesary. Luckily i couldn't stand the demo of the game so i don't have to worry about it (in which case even if i had liked the demo i could've just picked it up on the 360). But, keep in mind, you can take out the installation and just reinstall when you play it again. Especially with games like DMC4 which are fairly short on replay value and aren't that long to begin with. It's fairly easy and quick.

Anyway, it's not a horrible thing. I lowers loadtimes but 5gb is too much for any title (unless it's an MMO or something). 1-2gb sounds about right for most titles. In any case, it's not an issue. You can always delete the install and just reinstall when/if you play the title again. It's very easy.

Keep in mind though that DMC4 is literally the only title with a mandatory install at this point. People are blowing this way out of proportion.

ifuseeka

I love above post since its basically what I would say, actually I'm in the same boat but I'm at 25 gigs with only 2 saved game files,dmc4 update and a NG demo...

I actually dont want to delete any game files for the games I buy cause honestly shouldn't have to make a desperate choice.I'm at least gonna buy 3-4 PS3 games this year and I'm kinda worried about how much memory I'll have left.

I honestly didnt think anything of it, not a big deal at all to me. I don't understand why so many people are whining and complaining about it. Then again i guess everyones used to people nitpicking with the ps3. Funny thing is MS replaces 360s for freeso thats why it isn't a big deal, now if sony wants to give me extra memory for a over priced 40 gig HDD console while 2 game saved files and a update basically dropped me done to almost half memory doesn't sit to well for me and others who have the 40 gig and 20 gig ps3's.

Mathematically I said 10 seconds per load screen on 360, which is certainly on the high end. I'd say the screens were more around 5 seconds, as I played it I wondered why anyone would make a big deal over basically a non issue.

For a game like Oblivion I could understand installing, but after playing about 25 or so ps3 games and only installing Genji, and maybe a few others I don't really see the need.

its not the install time that worrys me, its the fact that 5GB of a harddrive would be taken away. if this becomes a frequent occurence you wont have many games to play.

How big a deal this is really depends on the person. Someone like a friend of mine who has a 20gb (or those witha 40gb too probably) and likes to keep alot of his games it's a big deal due to HDD space. But for people who have waited and have the 80gb model or (like me) are waiting for a potential model with a larger HDD at an even cheaper price (may buy the 80gb though) it's not a big deal.

I don't like the idea of it, but it's not a bad thing... I just think it's a sad sign, that Consoles are now just as user unfriendly as PC's...

Next gen upgradable graphics cards!

Being able to install games to decrease load times = great success.

In fact, to decrease load times, I would take graphics that were heavily reduced in quality.

It is a bad thing for consoles with small space...

You will come too uninstall/reinstall your games way too much if this trend continues.. Well most likely you will simply ignore playing half the games you own since it is such a hassle too install them once again..

Well with only a few games needing installation it isn't exactly a bad thing.. Except for those peopole who bought a 20 GB PS3.. They got Owned by devs.

Now it seems the latest trend in PS3 bashing is trying to act like installation is a bad thing? You honestly don't think if MS had a standard HDD, devs wouldn't be doing the same thing for the 360?

It seems a lot of this flack comes from the 360 camp, trying despirately to reach at straws to control the damage that hasn't even happened yet (and for all we know ... won't.)

But seriously? The fact that a small portion of games gets installed to the harddrive to decrease loading times? is that horrible? I was unaware this was a bad thing. Or maybe it really isn't, and you're just blowing it way out of proportion because you can't stand to even concieve the PS3 doing well in sales...0rin

I'm really starting to lean towards the PS3 now that i've had one (borrowed) for a few weeks. But i hate the idea of installing. Having to waste time installing games instead of putting in the disk and playing is one of the reasons I stopped PC gaming years ago. I hate installing.

And you ask why people act like its a bad thing? I will answer your question with a question...Uncharted looks and plays awesome, doesn't require an install...and how much loading was there during the game?

The installing issue only tells me most devs still aren't using the PS3 hardware properly.

Orin. Your OP is flawed because you fail to mention that this is a MANDATORY installation.

I was under the impression that it was voluntary to reduce load times.

Mandatory installation is bad. Worse than multiple discs, perhaps.

That is too long!

Like I want to wait 20 minutes. I get irritated that I have to wait 2 for everything to get loaded up (turning on the 360 or Wii and such).

Do we really need the load up screens dammit? I know I'm playing a MS console thank you! :P

On a serious note, I find it hilarious cows getting all defensive about installation times, but woe betide any game where you have to change disks every 6 hours!!! (same goes for people who bash installation times and have no problem swapping disks) The hypocrisy on this board is getting beyond a joke.

It is similiar to when some people were giving the 360 users a hard time about disc swapping. They are really both insignificant issues.

It's not just the annoyance of waiting 20 minutes, 5Gigs just for a silly not needed feature is pointless when lots of games are already have quick to loading times anyway. I can see more games doing the same on the PS3, it's just a good way of masking in the fact that PS3's Blu-ray drive speeds suck. Expect RE5 to have 5GB installation or maybe even bigger and all multiplats from there on. You wanna play DMC4 and RE5 all in the same week, thats 10GB right there. Lets add Hot Shots Golf.. 15GB :( oh dear.

Thats the killer, 30 seconds to swap a disk is the end of the world and game breaking, but when it comes to a 20 minute installation everyone who criticises it is being unreasonable. Cows!

It is just more evidence that the majority of SW logic is flawed beyond belief, primarily due to blind fanboyism.

Bring on the installations.

The HDD is switchable, so you can always switch it out for a bigger one.

DMC 4 is a good example of how to elimnate or reduce load times. Some areas in DMC 4 don't need to load where the 360 version loads. ( I think when your at the castle is an example). When the PS3 versoin does load its like less than a second.

As long as the console actually works I am happy, I don't regret my purchase but am proud to own all 3 consoles. Installing ain't so bad to be honest, but if you do not install you notice that load times are really bad.
