What kind of graphics do you expect next generation?

In a battlefield 3 interview the developer said frostbite 2.0 was an engine for next gen consoles, so basically battlefield 3 pc graphics are what I am expecting for next gen consoles. It is actually really sad because Battlefield 3 will be similar to crysis in graphics quality, which came out in 2007. If we are not expecting a new console from microsoft or sony until 2013, then that means that pcs are 6 years ahead of consoles. Wow. That is basically an entire life span of a console. It is like pcs are ps3s and consoles are ps2s.

So what kind of graphics do you expect next generation. consoles of course, pcs dont have silly generations

360 already has almost-avatar like graphics though.

I want holograms. I want to start looking at holograms of Mario running through the mushroom kingdom on my tabletop. New genres--new way to play games. This fps garbage is getting out of hand.

I'm not sure, Gamespot got a preview of the next gen hardware last month though, and rated the graphics an 8.5/10 , so get from that what you will

I'm pretty sure developers can achieve avatar quality in this gen if they try hard enough. The current hardware has a lot more to give.The developers are just lazy.

I expect:

Full 1080p with at least some levels of antialiasing.

Even higher polygon counts to stress those next-gen processors.

If that's what the next-gen consoles will do, I may transfer the majority of my gaming to consoles.

I think this is the most realistic expectation. Considering 1080p is the max resolution, it seems reasonable--if not maybe surpassing that a tad.

We are, or I should say the majority can be described that way. The industry is big to the point where the game consumer needs to understand ethics, at least just a bit. You really hit it on the head with that post.

Other features? See, the way things are now I feel that features can be continued to be added to the current gen. The next gen really has to blow people away, visually i think, in order for it to sell.

1080p standard, a much larger % of games at 60 FPS, and modded Crysis visuals.

I'm thinking standard motion controls to come bundled with the package, not necessarily the primary controller but everybody will have them, increased online functionality, more services, easier to integrate with mobile devices, larger harddrives.

Sure they'll have more processing power and more RAM, but it's not going to be the focus of the console.

Those are all possible on current gen. How would they market motion controllers if it would be cheaper to pick up a Move for the current gen playstation than buy a whole new system. The problem with your logic is that current gen consoles have most of these features, or can be improved upon in the manner in which you speak. No way do I believe people would upgrade if the major selling point was features. I fully expect next gen to focus mostly on mind blowingly good visuals. Perhaps this gen is ending up to be rather long because the big 2 know that they have to wait for prices to come down to show a large increase in visual fidelity.

For the Ps4 I expect at least the same core graphics but at 1080p, with all the extra things like high AF and AA of course.

For the Wii U I at least expect it to run games at 720p, but with the core graphics being significantly better than the ps3's.

I'm not exactly sure what to expect honestly :P the above is just the minimum I'd be satisfied with.

Minus the motion-control absurdity, that sounds like what PC's have been doing forever. More services, larger hardrives....I don't think that's going to get people excited.Storm_Marine

The success of the Wii and the Kinect make that notn absurd. PCs don't work like consoles either. Different divisions of the PC are replying to the demand for different features for different industries. We need better graphics for games, we need better sound for audio mixing, we need more powerful processing for tons of other stuff. None of that is how consoles work.

Adding tons of unsustainable horsepower to a console after the Wii has sold over 80 million is kind of pointless from a business perspective. System wars is far to focused on graphics to know why people buy gaming consoles in the first place.

I expect next gen to have the least noticeable jump in graphics, compared to previous gens.

And I'm fine with that, if it keeps things cheap.

Sony devs have already said they were going to keep things on the cheaper end of spectrum instead of following the PS3 launch route.

Microsoft's move into the casual market makes me feel like they won't be pushing for the next top of the line technoloy.

Nintendo's Wii U doesn't seem to be impressively more powerful than what's on the HD twins right now.

PC technology will have to stay somewhere in line in order to remain competitive with consoles. Technology growth will slow down and PC hardware will become more affordable. I don't expect a large increase but still an increase in gamers becoming PC gamers next gen.

I see no need for any improvements in games visually. They're good enough for me as is.meetroid8
