The PSP is definitely the better handheld as far as games go. The DS is a gimmick handheld. I have proof! Here at GamSpot, the PSP has more AAA + AA games than does the DS. The PSP has only 5 AAA games compared to the DS' 7, however, it is in AA land that the PSP far surpasses the DS. Links are below:

Phoenix Wright, Pokemon, Meteos, Final Fantasy III, Elite Beat Agents, Castlevania, Trauma Center, Hotel Dusk.

Those destroy the PSP.

Those links aren't working for me, but I'd still like to chime in that you can't call the DS a gimmick, since it has been consistently trouncing all other platforms in sales for quite some time.

The DS has much better original series than the PSP in my opinion.  With the PSP, it's more of the same, but with the DS, the games have character, and you see some interesting concepts because of the touch screen.

The PSP is tailored to one type of gamer, while the DS is tailored to a wider audience.

The PSP clearly is better, I mean they had the talking pubes! Not to mention their latest ad campaign that is a complete ripoff of Cheeze-its.
Cheeze-its = "Get your own box."
PSP = "Dude, get your own."

When you go by game SCORES, the MOBILE DESTROYS the PSP/DS.

The MOBILE is definitely the better handheld as far as games go. The PSP and DS are gimmicks. I have proof! Here at GamSpot, the Mobile has more AAA + AA games than PSP/DS. Links are below:

PSP List of Games by Rating

Mobile Wins! Fatality!

(p.s. why don't those links work?)

en you measure success by scores and sales, the DS trumps the PSP. Million seller softwares and hardware doubling and growing, the competition, not to mention the million seller games are all "great" games.

No it isn't. It's taking the PS2 quality games, and making them worse. That's all it's doing. Burnout, Metal Gear, Daxter, Tekken. All PS2 games dumbed down to portable form. Lumines is the only original game for PSP that's good, might I point out it made it's way over to another platform in the process.

When will you people learn? you can't compare scores between consoles/handhelds since they have different standards, it just doesn't make any sense.

As a handheld gaming system, the PSP has too many hardware flaws to really compete even if you like its slew of mostly PS2 ports and sports.

Phoenix Wright is a clickfest
Pokemon... again? A kids game? Please.
FF remakes don't really count anymore, they're all over the place.
Castlevania's system is already getting very, very old.
Trauma Center is decent, but still a minigame at heart.
Hotel Dusk doesn't need the touch screen.  Could have been infinitely better on PSP.

I'll give you Elite Beat Agents, other than that, DS is just like the Wii, full of shallow minigame gameplay.

sony is KNOWN for rpgs

i know people who bought a psp really expecting some solid rpg experiences

what do they get? action rpg ff.. no DQ... no rpg even close to scoring MnL:PiT level.. and yippee ports you could play using emulation

most anticipated rpg... level5's game...

"DS is just like the Wii, full of shallow minigame gameplay. " whats interesting is one of the biggest genres in development for the platform seems to be strategy games...

it is just the high price of the psp (before the cut) $200 was alot to ask for a handheld, when it becomes less than 150 that thing will fly off shelves.

Gamespots Opinion =/= The enitre worlds opinion.  If you want to base you opinion of a single review site opinion that show you are weak and can't make your own descisions.  Review sites have very little eccect on how games do in the real world.  Just like movies.  For example The moive 300 recived horrible review from just about everywere but it made the Box offices top 20 of all time.

 should ANYONE really take him seriously? FF don't count? I guess Metal Gear doesn't either, and forget the fact that PSP has like 3 FF games coming... I'm sure NO ONE is hyping those...

Trauma Center a mini-game? Wow... seriously, kudos... you fanboys just have the worst vocabulary descriptors ever...

Castlevania still scores solid, and is a great game, not to mention PSP fanboys are clamoring for one and now they get one.

Hotel Dusk uses more than a touch screen, but someone who didn't play it wouldn't know... Trace Memory did the same thing... Plus Phoenix Wright games are just easier to manage with the touch screen, and the fourth game will be akin to the 5th chapter of PW:AA

Pokemon sells, and scores well. Something wrong with a great game? No, you're just bitter, that's all.

Only problem is you aren't mentioning games, just characters... if you can find Star Fox Command, NSMB/Mario & Luigi PiT, LoZ: PH, and more on other consoles, kudos, and tell me where. Last I checked, they were only on the DS, not to mention Trauma Center, Lunar Knights, Trace Memory, Hotel Dusk, Castlevania games, Brain Age, Nintendogs, Meteos, Metroid Prime: Hunters, Mario Kart DS, Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, and soooo much more.

when you go by sales, DS beats PSP
It's a stupid battle.  Both handhelds have fantastic games.  The right one for you just depends on your taste and what genres you prefer.  Despite what the DS fanboys will say, PSP is selling well, though clearly not as well as DS.

GameSpot isn't the sole deciding factor on whether games are good or not.  Now, if you were to give my a list of PSP/DS game scores which were averages from many, many reviews (GameRankings, cough cough) then you might have something.

But anyway, the way I see it PSP vs. DS is like SNES vs. Genesis: simply a matter of preference.  There's not a clear winnder between the two.

[QUOTE="namelesschu"]Mario - Console Spinoff
Zelda -Console Spinoff
Metroid -Console Spinoff
Star Fox - Console Spinoff

I wish nintendo even had enough games to diss. Thanks for trying though.

He was debating my list of "console spinoffs". The PSP still has nothing on DS's original IPs.

Phoenix Wright, Pokemon, Meteos, Final Fantasy III, Elite Beat Agents, Castlevania, Trauma Center, Hotel Dusk.

Those destroy the PSP.

Phoenix Wright is a clickfest But it is fun
Pokemon... again? A kids game? Please. Oh yea I forgot, No Blood=Bad Game
FF remakes don't really count anymore, they're all over the place. Then show me where i can buy FF3 in america on a different platfrom
Castlevania's system is already getting very, very old. Ill guve you that and that alone
Trauma Center is decent, but still a minigame at heart. um nice try
Hotel Dusk doesn't need the touch screen. Could have been infinitely better on PSP. But it isnt on the psp

I'll give you Elite Beat Agents, other than that, DS is just like the Wii, full of shallow minigame gameplay.

I think that there are only 5 or so minigames out there among the DS' massive library

PSP List of Games by Rating

DS List of Games by Rating

PSP Wins! Fatality!

MantiCore2K8

The scorces are more of a tie at first. But the DS has more games with a rating of 9 while they both tie at 9.1 and 9.2 so I think PSP is loosing to the DS. :P

Burnout - Console spinoff.
MGSPO - Console spinoff.
Syphon Filter - Console spinoff.
Daxter- Console spinoff.
Tekken -Console spinoff.
World Soccer - Console spinoff.
SOCOM - Console spinoff.
Wipeout - Console spinoff.
Fifa - Console spinoff.
GTA - Console spinoff.
Mega Man - Remake.
Smackdown vs. Raw - Console spinoff.
Twisted Metal - Console spinoff.
Ape Escape - Console spinoff.
KillZone - Console spinoff.

Thanks for trying though. PSP has nothing on DS. Especially when I could just buy a PS2 for cheaper, and get another form of ALL those games.

Mario - Console Spinoff
Zelda -Console Spinoff
Metroid -Console Spinoff
Star Fox - Console Spinoff

So what about Phoenix Wright? Trace Memory? Magical Starsign? Elite Beat Agents? Brain Age? Cooking Mama? Trauma Center?Nintendogs? Meteos? LostMagic? Scurge: Hive?

Oh that's right, those are original IPs. Silly me, cows don't like to try something new. They like to make sure they are playing a game they might like based on a name.

ok everything in red is just a minigame or mingame compilation that last for hours on end, the blue is just laughable, the brown can be compared to puzzle bobble, bust a move/groove or other similar games. Nintendogs is pretty much tamogochi nintedo edition. WTF is that? But i will give you the black

all those games are spin offs.  Just like tekken, daxter, ratchet, burnout, syphon filter, etc on the PSP

Excuse me? Holded games tell me otherwise...

also so do Final Fantasy III, Chocobo Tales, Etrian Oddyssey, FFT A2, FF: RW, ASH, Phoenix Wright, and I'm sure there's more. Yet you can look it up yourself. DS has the sequels of some of the best franchises in new games, also many redone for the DS like Ninja Gaiden DS, and many new games like Brain Age, Nintendogs, PW, and well I won't repeat myself  but you can see.

Scores are opinions, and therefore cannot be used to determine the universal quality of a game. There is no universal good or bad. Different people have different tastes, and anyone who takes the word of a reviewer as the word of god needs their head examined. The quality of games is a purely subjective matter.

This thread is pointless. Both systems are great, and most people have already made their choice between the two.

Looking at a meaningless list of scores will not change anyone's mind.Â
