Here are some examples of Japanese properties that Japanese companies let the West develop games for....

Donkey Kong Country - the "ur-example", Rare revived the character and put him back in the spotlight. If you count Donkey Kong 64, Rare did 4 main titles in this series, and Retro did the new one.

Metroid Prime - Brought Metroid back from the dead, plain and simple. The entire trilogy is as close to greatness as it can be to masterpiece, Super Metroid, while bringing Metroid successfully into 3d. Other M's terribleness is a sign that Nintendo should have stuck with Retro studios.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - wow, what a break from the continous Simon's Quest and Symphony of the Night rehashes, MercurySteam finally made a great 3d Castlevania game, while offering a fresh new unique take on the series. MercurySteam should now be home to console Castlevania, and with DLC and a sequel along the way, things can only become better.

Upcoming DmC - Whine about the new Dante all you want, but I put faith a Ninja Theory when it comes to characterization, especially after the brilliant story oand characters of Enslaved.

Here are some franchises that Japanese game companies should let Western developers develop for.

Final Fantasy - easy....The loss of key people in the company, the drop in writing, direction, and storytelling standards (ex. Toriyama), the more distant from its roots it has become, and the more Japanidfied (thanks to Nomura) the series has becomehas lead to the decline of the series. Its time to put the franchise into Western hands, Obsidian for example. They would easily freshen up the series storytelling and other elements, as well as take it back to its roots. Add choice and consquence as well. And no more idiotic bird running females.....

Legend of Zelda - would be very interesting, and may freshen up the series. If Samus's series could get a makeover. How about Link? And when will they use Zelda herself as a protagonist (thats not those terrible 3do games)? The series does need freshing up.

The 7th Saga - this game should be remade, or expanded. Of all the SNES JRPGs, this game has the most Western flavor. It was also the Demon's Souls of its day, hard as hell. Apprentice battles anyone?

Contra - the West would do a Contra game well...it may have a hand at influencing the West in its game design as well.

Metal Gear Solid. Less cow-like sounds from robots and less melodramatic writing and cutscenes would've worked for the series, especially the 4th one.

Bioware obviously knows how to make space epics.... so I cant help but to wonder how they wouldve done Star Ocean 4....

So yeah, Star Ocean. Tri-Ace pretty much dropped the ball on The Last Hope.

agreed. I liked the other 3 games, they weren't typical JRPGs in plot stucture and character inbteraction. Last Hope I found unplayable...yikes the VA and the writing was bad.

Bioware really can't do a FF game....but Obsidan, a free agent developer can. Bioware however could revive the Ultima series, EA has the rights.

Enslaved had generic characters and an awful story. They were presented well, since that's the only thing Ninja Theory can handle, but the cast was made up of cliches and the story, while simple at first, went the lol2deep4u route with the stupid ending.

consider that Journey To The West was a huge inspiration....Monkey, Trip, and Pigsy were modeled after the novels characters. and hell no, it wasn't that cliched, especially when it comes to Monkey and Trips relationship. While most developers would fall under the "lets have them get romantic" trap, NT settles for subtely. And really, in the ending, Pyramid's plot wasn't that important in the grand scope of things, Trip's reaction was more important.

Implying that I like the abomination that is Homecoming.

And why not? Silent Hill is a horror game that relies heavily on atmosphere to build up the horror. All of Frictional Games' are exactly that.

There is a reason why the enviroments in Amnesia are extremely repetitive, or the voice acting sucks, or the writing sucks, or there is no any good animation whatsoever. The studio behind Amnesia was underbudgeted but most importantly understaffed. Now with what they got they did the best game they could. But Silent Hill needs all these things.

Yeah, only 4 peoples with a modest budget but they still managed to create an awesome horror game. Imagine if they are given a big budget and more manpower. They know how to, they just lack the money.

They don't hit you over the head with romance plot, but it's not subtle either - it's made pretty clear they fall for each other. Hell, Pigsy's character serves little purpose other than to show this. Monkey and Trip really were generic - Monkey plays the stereotypical strong and stupid male and Trip the weak and smart female. NT even had the audacity to make Monkey whack a computer to get it working.

The Pyramid plot is secondary to the Monkey/Trip plot, but it doesn't change the fact that it was goddamned stupid. And the Monkey/Trip plot wasn't even done well - it lacked development. Monkey goes from "I'M GOING TO KILL YOU" to companion in a flash. The "I die, you die" component of their relationship is not enough to explain the sudden shift in attitude.

First off all...Monkey is far from the stupid male...in fact he is quite a bit smarter than Trip when it comes to survival skills. Also consider, the material it was inspired from...Monkey had to protect Tripitaka as well in the novel (in fact Trip was a male monk). Conisider Chapter 2, when Monkey stops Trip from walking over a minefield. Trip and Monkey's relationship had plenty of development. It was at the end Chapter 5 when their relationship truly changed, the Chapter 2 scene with the fish tank is a key scene as well. Nope, they aren't ever romantic in the game, "support" doesn't mean romance. Really Pigsy mistakes their relationship as romantic. Monkey outright said "he would not hit on a girl thats just lost her father".

Japans problem is lack of original ideas, they just keep rehashing the same thing and keep ripping off other people

Anime industry has the same problem

but FFversus13 does look like a really good game, looks pretty unique aswell

Castlevania and Contra seem like dead franchises, but Konami still have Metal Gear to fall back on, also Snatcher, i wish they would remake that...

still Castlevania is far from a dead franchise considering not only the new console game and the downloadable game, but the success of the recent DS games.

Survival skills as in bashing crap into a pulp. And yes, Monkey does stop Trip from walking over a minefield, and carries her across danger because she's the woman and he's the man; behavior unoriginally repeated thoughout the game. The development I'm talking about is going from hate to companion - their relationship doesn't gradually go from one to the other, it just shifts almost instantly. And it's pretty clear they fall for eachother. If the scenes with Pigsy aren't enough (and they should be enough - the guy sacrifices himself because he knows the relationship between Monkey and Trip goes beyond the "support" role he plays), there's the scene where Monkey is released from his duty, but he himself chooses to continue wearing the headband. Pigsy's sacrifice is worthless otherwise, which wouldn't do the story any favors.

How about Monkey carries Trip through the minefield because he can see the mines through the headband and Trip cannot? That seems like a good logical explaination. And note how Monkey sees that its a minefield, or how he calms Trip in dangerous situations. Or how Trip really got stupid when they returned home, letting her emotions overtake her. Monkey and Trip are smart on certain things and lacking in others, thats why they need eachother. There is no real instant shift, their relationship was pretty contentious until after Chapter 5 when they leave New York after they help eachother get over the Brooklyn Bridge. The game never implies that the relationship is romantic. Just because Pigsy thinks so doesn't make it so. It implies at most a strong friendship. Remember also that Pigsy was a friend of Trip's father and cared for Trip's happiness, thats also a logical explanation for his sacrifice, so Trip can finish her mission.

None we need new IP's, "who should rehash what next" is the core of what is really wrong with all modern media. Don't get me wrong Im all for an update to a series now and then (Im a Nintendo fan so I would be a hypocrite if I said otherwise) but I think one entry a gen should suffice, and having somebody on the other side of the world give their take on another teams work seems like time better spent creating something new.

You want FF to become a WRPG? Nah can't say I agree with that.

I'd really like to have seen what Fortress would have been like. Even if it wasn't good, it would be super interesting as an experiment.

Anyway, most of my answers to this question would involve Rare or Retro taking over Nintendo franchises for a game or two. I'd especially like to see, if they were up to it, a 3DS Zelda game co-developed by Retro.

LEAVE FINAL FANTASY ALONE!!! I love Bioware, but they would kill what I love about Final Fantasy. Also, DMC was perfect. It doesn't need more characterisation when Dante (and Nero) are awesome, loved characters already. And I'd like to play as Dante, not Tameem Antoniades. But the main reason I love DMC is the gameplay; Heavenly Sword & Enslaved combat is far, far, far from DMC quality.

As for Zelda.. Darksiders. So, no, it should stay Japanese.

I agree with FF. Japanese FF is stuck in time. Or do the fans prefer that? Maybe there's a huge demand for standard japanese rpg's.
