I don't get it. If you hated oblivion, explain to my why you wont hate skyrim? Most of the things I hear are:

"Because it looks better (visually)"... k. Barely looks better.

"Because the combat is an improvement"... K. Watch the videos.

"They are making it into a bigger and deeper game"... K. Look at what Betheda has said. It's been dumbed down even further.

I just wonder. To those who thought oblivion was not good. They will say the same about Skyrim.

Oblivion was a monster when it launched. 95% in metacritic, and the game with the most ammount of GOTY awards that year. (More than Gears).

Yet, the community hated it (like every other game, when it becomes popular), due to being less "hardcore" than Morrowind.

Which puzzles me, because Skyrim is going to be less "hardcore" than oblivion. :?

Because they've been drinking the Kool-Aid Bethesda is handing out.

The fact that the studio hasn't developed a good game since Morrowind is beside the point. It's all about hype.

I did't hate Oblivion. How could I? It was by far the best TES game, in the same way Fallout 3 was better than F1/2.

Bethesda is the best RPG developer, and their games just keep improving.

Oblivion's main problem wasn't that it was a bad RPG, but that it wasn't that good at anything else. I don't care if it's an RPG or not, RPGs aren't the only kind of game that can be great. I just want a game that's fun to play. Skyrim looks like that.

Their "pure" RPGs (Baldur's Gate 1/2, Dragon Age Origins) weren't very good, they are at their best when they make hybrids (ME2, ME3), that's why I don't compare them directly to Bethesda :]

I don't feel that way at all.

I feel that Bethesda (understandably) sold out to the lowest common denominator with Oblivion, and that they will continue to do so.

I've played good rpg's before, and they are the same as any modern rpg. Only difference is the role they play (get it?). Define "good rpg's" In reality, I would say Mass effect 2, Diablo, Fallout Series, Baldurs gate, Witcher 1-2, and yes... Oblivion. There are plently of deep rpg's on the pc, but there are also ones that appeal to a bigger set of gamers. They are still rpg's, and there is no such thing as "good and better" rpg's. Only "Good or better" games.

Oblivion sucked because of repetitive environments, terrible characters, an uninteresting plot, and bland combat. Which are probably the same reasons why Skyrim will suck too because lolBethesda.

I haven't really seen many Oblivion critics jumping on-board with Skyrim, but I'd just accredit that to the hypetrain like darklink mentioned.

Slashkice

Oh God I've seen it so many times. Not on system wars though. Mainly on general boards, and video comments. "Wow Skyrim looks increadible, oblivion sucked, but this will be GOTY". K.

Both of you should at least try to play one real RPG rather than following the (casual console shooter obsessed) crowd in assuming real RPGs are boring.

Oblivion is a action - adventure with horrible AI (infinitely inferior to that of Gothic 1, a game from 2001) and a copy pasted world, how you could enjoy such mediocrity, without much needed mods, is beyond me.

And dungeon crawler isn't a genre. Sub-genre.

Edit: Can you show me one of the posts where I give an indication that I don't know what rpg's are?

Great. So you assume that I dislike them? :|And I actually didn't agree with that, I know what he meant. He was talking about classic rpg's like Tormented. Which might be boring to some. I played it, bored me, but still liked it. I was young as well.

I don't get it.TailBlood
Being a member of the Bethesda Forums, I get it.:P The majority of Oblivion "haters" are MW fans, they didn't like the direction Bethesda took with the sequel. Now it's dumbed down, Todd Howard says it will look the same on PC as it does on console (no high-end GPU detection), stats are practically non-existent. Some might be pulled in by dressed-up meshes & textures - not me, take out the core of an Elder Scrolls RPG, what's the point of playing it? At the other end of the spectrum you have Drakensang, which has more stats than you can count, but they all have purpose and meaning for character development.

Zurrur

I certrainly hope it sucks as bad as Oblivion......9.6 at GS, 9.4 at metacritic, and tons of GOTY's.

btw this game is more hardcore in actual gameplay - no more backpedaling, timed blocking, less level scaling, and balanced spells this time.

While I do not thing Skyrim will be anything near GOTY, I do Like what I see.

I do however think I should explain where Im comming from with this, and my observations:

For me Oblivion was an adventure game, I do know that its oficially an RPG, but it had so little to do with actualroleplaying that I just saw it as an adventuregame. It was overly repetetive,, and when you playied 20 ours of it, you had seen it all, all 3 tilesets of dungeons (well depending if you counted the games or not).

The expansion to Oblivion however was QUITE good you know...

And with all of Bethesdas games, I see it as a sandbox for Modders, one of the biggest reasons to get Skyrin to me, is to see what Modders will do with all this land, where they can play around.

Now here is the amuzing thing about Skyrim: all the real problems I had with Oblivion either looks to have been corrected, or is talked about as being corrected (altho from talk to truth there are a huge gap).

I downright hated the stiff animations, and lack of visualimpactfrom both Oblivion and FO3 (untill you took a limb off that is) and it DOES seem like the visual impacts are in the game now, aswell as FAR better animated people, movement and so on alså looks far better.

I like the Perk addition alot, and combat looks a fair bit better now, altho its still the same basics.

I like the look of the world a whole lot better then Oblivion

And they claim the dungeons have WAY more attention payied to them, and more varried.

Im interrested in the Radient story and (and ai overhaull) not as much from a game perspective, but more from a code perspective)

But as an rpg? No, Skyrim is not really an RPG for me, th removal of stats, and "streamlining" is pretty much things I have real problems with ESPECIALLY in rpgs, a genre that is ment to be deep (since it should portray a working world, with A whole lot of factors). So to me Both Bioware and Bethesda has killed off thier reputation as RPG devs to me. It does not mean that the games they make are bad games tho, just not RPGs.

Oblivion was bad, Fallout 3 was also bad. Skyrim looks to be the worst of the bunch however.

Ultima 7... yeah, I miss that game. Gothic series had superior AI to both Elder Scrolls: Oblivion and Fallout 3.

Besides Bethesda saying they're taking out RPG elements to make it more of a straight-forward action game?

I'd give you the article but I didn't save the link.

From what the interview said, everything that makes RPGs not a pick-up-and-play game. What they said was "remove confusion for ANYONE playing the game." Then they proceded to call Call of Duty hardcore and that it has RPG elements.

1. It's not dumbed down in fact they've made it more complicated with the perk system they've taken away a few skills and added perk trees to each one.

2. The community never hated it just the haters haters going to hate.

3. GOTY will be a 4 way battle between MW 3, Dark Souls, BFBC 3 and Skyrim (Maybe Uncharted 3)

I dont like oblivion, unless its texture modded, combat modded, signs modded, and has a different main storyline. That being said, i think skyrim improves where it counts, except with the stats, they have made those worse and worse. Plus i want my damn spears and halberds back.
