Seriously, the answer is hype.

Because Metro Last Light is a far superior game in gameplay, atmosphere, and story. But critics have to judge MLL far more harshly because it was not hyped as much, unlike Bioshock Infinite, which had years of hype. Hell, the only thing I think Infinite does better is the music, which is world class in that department.

Gamplay....lets see, a variety pack in which you have choice in the gameplay (hell, you don't have to kill any human until the last guys at the end of the game) mostly done real well, or an average shooting gallery that is dumbed down from its predecessors. But reviewers seemingly want to give BSI a free pass for its shallow gameplay while criticizing aspects of MLL's harshly, such as the AI in MLL (which the AI is far from bad, it just follows the rules of the game). One things for sure, the human AI in MLL doesn't banzai rush you like idiots. Hell BSI enemies aren't much different from splicers in initellegence.

The writing is far superior in MLL than it is in Bioshock Infinite. You can tell, a novelist wrote the game, not some game designer. While MLL does have its weak plot moments, such as the handling of Anna's character (hopefully the novel Metro 2035 can fix as well as DLC), Infinite's plot has so many more problems, such as the plot holes, all the handwaving where depth should be, and the arbitrary nature that forces the plot into a ridicoulous cop out ending. Nevermind that in BSI, the supernatural elements take away from the human themes, MLL's supernatural elements reinforce them.

The primary reason that MLL is better than Infinite is not the story or its gameplay, or its atmosphere....its how it handles its themes. Bioshock Infinite approaches its themes with a handwave....its cartoony. Its treated with kids gloves, and ultimately the story actually could have done without it. Metro Last Light approaches its themes on humanity with care and frightening percision, with many brutal parts that fit the narrative. You could not have MLL without these themes, it wouldn't work. It revolves around them. While BSI revolves around dimensions and deus ex machina, with its human themes at a distance, MLL is brave enough to have its story revolve around its themes...and dare I say, MLL may be one of the best statements on the human condition in gaming. Its that well done.

But between an overhyped AAA shooter with a brand name vs. an eastern european shooter with no hype....the latter just can't win. At least Kevin V gave them just as much due as the former. Kudos Kevin Van Ord.

"the human AI in MLL doesn't banzai rush you like idiots" You're right. The AI in LL just stands there waiting for you to take aim and kill them. Don't even start about being able to sneak instead of shooting your way through, because sneaking in that game is dull beyond belief and offers no challenge whatsoever.

I have got into a fire fight once in MLL and it was on purpose. The enemy AI is so oblivious

No, it's because Metro isn't as polished, consistently takes control away from the player and has a Call of Duty like campaign.  Player interaction means nothing, you are a passive viewer.

BioShock Infinite has this same issue, but only for the final 30 minutes, not across the entire duration of the campaign.  You are a spectator more than a player character and until 4A Games figures that out they will never create an experience that is as fun, replayable and well received as BioShock Infnite.

Metro is as linear and scripted as CoD.

At least 2033 is.  I have no idea about Last Light, but it doesn't look to be wildly different.  I'm not discussing themes or atmosphere here.  But it is a tightly wound game that has you follow a clear, linear path.  Ala Call of Duty.  That is not an insult to either CoD or Metro.  It's just what it is.

Some only call Bioshock overrated because they overhyped it and it couldn't possibly live up their expectations. Bioshock and Metro both deserve their high ratings, contrary to forum chatter.

In terms of atmosphere, mood, etc.  Yes.

But Half-Life, despite being linear, never so frequently took control away from the player.  Call of Duty does.  It makes you a passive observer.  And Metro does that as well.  Hence the CoD comparison.

Still not seeing the comparison. There a few moments that it takes away control for a few seconds like if you fall or a monster jumps out but not as frequently or as long as a CoD game. Any game with a silent protagonist makes you feel like a passive observer.

Take your pick for comparison.  When I played I felt Metro was a Call of Duty campaign done right (which we haven't seen since CoD4).  If you're not getting that vibe than I don't know what else to tell you.  But I felt very much that I was playing a really good CoD campaign (monsters and post-apocalyptic setting not withstanding obviously).

But CoD campaigns also have the issue of not being all that replayable.  You generally know what to expect, and with a game like BioShock Infinite I never had that issue.  It's a replayable game.  Metro doesn't have that same replayability going for it.  If you don't see a CoD comparison in terms of design than that's on you I guess.  But it's all I get from Metro.

Better gameplay than Bioshock?? I disagree. MLL doesn't have terrible gameplay but its nothing special. I had more fun with Bioshock Infinite's gameplay tbh. Neither game has amazing gameplay though.

This.

Also, BioShock Infinite's gameplay opens up some more creative possibilities at the least for people who experiment.

[QUOTE="BPoole96"]Metro certainly has better gameplay. I'm not finished the game yet so I can't speak for the story but is say Bioshock wins at story this far.mems_1224
Better gameplay than Bioshock?? I disagree. MLL doesn't have terrible gameplay but its nothing special. I had more fun with Bioshock Infinite's gameplay tbh. Neither game has amazing gameplay though.

None of the guns in Bioshock were particularly fun to use and most of the powers felt the same, but it was just a different animation. For instance, you can summon a murder of crows to damage and incapacitate small enemies with birds, or you can use something like Shock Jockey or the one that pops them all up in the air, which also does damage and incapacitates enemies. There is no stealth element like in Metro and having to manage things like ammo/ammo types, gas mask filters, bullet currency, , limited health packs (Bioshock has healthpacks but they are far kore abundant) ,gas mask condition, visor obstruction, flashlight charging, radiation, etc. I even had to load a previous save just because the way a handled a particular section screwed me over because I wasted too much ammo fighting a big mutant. The first time I played Bioshock I was so engaged with the characters and story that the average gameplay wasn't as apparent, but halfway through my second playthrough on 1999 Mode I quickly got bored as I experimented with different Vigors that basically produced the same effects as other Vigors. I'm already looking forward to playing through Metro again on Ranger Mode and have to really plan out each situation so I have enough supplies for the next.

Didn't they both score 9.0 here?

NeonNinja

He's using Metacritic for some reason.

Scores are irrelevant anyway. Also, you get nowhere when using them in an arguement.

I'd hate to break it to you but......Infinite wasn't that great of a game. Story was fine but the gameplay was average.

and Metro 2033 is nowhere near as scripted as CoD.

So, this is "The World According to Jebus" or what?  Because I hate to break it to you, BioShock Infinite is awesome and I think Metro 2033 plays like Call of Duty.
