I honestly think Valve is the best developer and here is why

They revolutionised the FPS

With the awesome Doom making the FPS, Half Life 2 truly owned the FPS with its awesome level design, story and art. They continue the series of Half Life with a huge fan following.

They make brilliant narrative

The half life series is acclaimed for their extremely well made narrative and story that is rivited with plot twists and amazing set pieces

They make beutiful graphics

The extremely flexible source engine originally used in 2004 in Half Life 2 was amazing at the time and has seen numerous upgrades and still used today and still blowing minds in the new Left 4 Dead 2.

They made an awesome modding scene.

Besides Epic games, Valve is the only other true competitor in the modding scene thanks to the versatatlity of the acclaimed Source Engine. Examples are the now famous Counter Strike games that turned in to full games.

They make great innovations in gaming.

Though admitidally they stick to FPS games, Valve still has created many awesome innovations. Just look at the Co-op in L4D and L4D2! The brilliant AI director keeps the game fun and exciting.

Awesome multiplayer games and Communities.

Css and Tf2 are amazing multiplayer games with huge fan followings. Team Fortress 2 has seen numerous updates to help it stay balanced and fun and the updates if added up could be sold seperatly as an expansion pack, but their free! This shows that Valve arent just doing it for money but doing it for the love of gaming.

All in all I think Valve is the best developer ever.

They kinda dropped the ball with L4D with me, but TF2 is amazing, and Half Life 2 is awesome, though Episode Three needs to hurry its ass onto my PC.

I like Valve quite a lot. They don't release a new game every year (except L4D2...) just to make money. They make sure the games are well done.

They also support their fanbase very well.

I have a hard time picking a best developer, but Valve is easily a contestant for the spot and these are all completely viable reasons why.

Soldier and Demo update for tf2 tomorrow!

on topic: while i love valve, i would say that valve, nintendo, dice, bioware, and betheda are all on the same level. (even though im not the biggest fan of bioware games, i have to give credit to where its due)

Valve is great for what they did with Half Life 1/2 and CS. But they haven't done anything since thats impressed me. They essentially just build a game foundation and let mods do the rest. In other words Left 4 Dead. Team Fortress 2 was mediocre IMO, and the Half Life episodes are good but they're just expansions. Make a new game, a full one, and I might reconsider them as great.

That's absurd. You should see their mod tools, community tools (Steam, IMO, is the best thing to happen to PC gaming), and mod support. They provide free DLC to all of their PC games, content packs with absolutely obscene features.....TF2 wasn't even recognizable to me when I last booted it up. They added new game modes, new maps, new weapons and accessories....it's insane. Orange Box was the best gaming deal in recent memory, and they continue to pack in great software. The fact that they even host downloads and auto-updates for mods like Insurgency and Mare Nostrum is pretty sick. In my experience no one, absolutely no one has the right to complain about Valve's community support, and if you do, shame on you and I hope that you have the honesty and self respect to rail publicly and often about the abuses of Infinity Ward and Microsoft....and maybe take a shot at Apple's closed platform proprietary BS once in a while, mister iMac.

BTW I just want to say that Left 4 Dead is a very, very poor example of a revolutionary FPS....

On part of the fact that Killing Floor, a UT2k4 mod, effectively included everything Left 4 Dead did, in 2007. In fact, their beta was released in 2005...

Killing Floor has 6 player survival co-op, extremely good enemy pathing and AI (at least in the retail version) with random spawns and attack paths (they often corner you), melee weapons, and a class based multiplayer component with unique mechanics surrounding on how classes support eachother (medic, demolitions, support, etc).

The melee weapons are the kicker, though. They have a fire axe, katana and a chain saw....sound familiar at all?

Enemies like the Bloat:

Look familiar?

They're nearly identical. They explode when you shoot them, deal poison damage when too close, and spew poisonous bile.

Then there's the flesh pound:

And the tank:

Which both charge you and clobber the piss out of you...effectively, same concept.

And many of Left 4 Dead's enemies are just variations on the same idea....they grab you and attack you and your teammates have to free you. Incidentally, clots in Killing Floor are exactly the same thing.

In other words, been there, done that. Left 4 Dead breaks no new ground. The only reason none of you know this is because Killing Floor was an obscure mod by a developer none of you heard of whereas Left 4 Dead has the support of millions of lemmings who've never heard the word "mod" before....and because Valve distributes Killing Floor and Red Orchestra, which means any conflict of interest would affect both Tripwire's (developer of KF) and Valve's income.

1. Valve 2. Bioware 3. Blizzard Killing Floor is better than L4D1 & 2. While Valve has made some very good games in the past they are on a bit of a decline with L4D. I think its time for Valve to move on to some new and more innovative ideas than just shooters.

Not a big fan of Half-Life, I don't know why but I can't play through it without getting bored. Everything else is great though, Left 4 Dead is also great, just wish I had more friends who played it. I only have two, one only plays MW2 and the other is barely on. L4D isn't really a game you can play on 360 by yourself because people are so bad and dumb they manage to die on easy..

why do people always say that? all their shooters play differently, and all of them are pretty good quality. there are tons of other devs to make other games, why can't valve just do what they are good at? thats the equivalent of saying "bioware is really good at rpg's, but they really need to expand to the flight-simulation genre if they wanna be great."

unfortunately, valve is in my block list after hl2.

i hate their fps games, i dont feel like i am walking but flying in their fps. you can find it in cs and hl2, and actually i saw ppl flying online...

i perfer mor realistic fps like MW.

the best developer should be blizzard, lol who else can convince millions of players pay $1000 for a game?

wow = $50 original + $100 expansion + 15 x 60 (5 years) = $1050

Left 4 Dead breaks new ground certainly. It's a a pretty unique game actually. No other game has the same type of Versus play where you have to get to the end of the level with regenerating zombies and the same coop elements it has.

Except that killing floor is piss poor compared to Left 4 dead. All you do is survive until everyone dies. They're objectives in L4D, crescendo events, both camping and running now.

Plus the Boomer doesn't do "Acid Damage" at all, it attracts the horde, something anyone who has even PLAYED the game know about. The similarities of the games are obivously there, but Left 4 dead stomps it into the ground, really hard.

Ok, I'll give you that but I still stand by my point. I'd lie to see ep 3 right about now and then it's probably time to leave Source to modders and indie devs.

same engine, and similar gameplay (gun and run FPS)...beside that velve is not a small studio like Naughty Dog, velveowns many studios.

you dont see EA, ubisoft, or activision makes only 1 type of games.

even a stduio like blizzardmakes many differenttypes of games.

Good games are not the only thing that make good developers, Valve constantly supports their community (especially Tf2) wheareas as BioWare makes awesome games but doesnt really update them that much for free

Naughty Dog is better. Valve is just a group of people who are too scared to work on the Ps3.
