CSS' zombie mod
zombie master
there are more but zombie master is by far the best, and i even liked it more than L4D. It supports a lot more players and the objectives in each of the 100 or so maps are are very unique.
I've played both of those and neither offers similar gameplay to L4D. Both of those are more about hunkering down in a defensible area and not dying.I prefer the hunker down and barricade type gameplay to just run and gun. Makes the game feel more like a cla$$ic zombie movie.

See I am not the only one. Valve is currently a one-trick pony. They need to be more diverse.
Well in that case I think that ND is a one trick pony since they only make platformers, square enix is a one trick pony since they only make JRPGS, etc, etc. Also, sony is a one trick pony in the gaming industry because they only have the playstation.
Well, N doesn't only make platformers. They make FPSs, adventure games, RPGs, puzzles, etc...
SE once tried to expand by making fighters and shooters and brawlers, but they failed. Now they just make FF and a bunch of crappy spin-offs. SE is just as bad as valve thee days.
Sony makes all sorts of games from adventure to racing, to action.
Valve makes a shooter for multi-player, a shooter for story, and a shooter for puzzles. That's it. If valve was truley a great dev, they would have the talent to do more than one genre.
Half Life 2 did nothing for the FPS genera.
Half Life 2 had a terrible narrative
The modders mad an awesome modding scene
Sorry but Valve just gets way more credit than it deserves.

Maybe they don't want to. Valve is incredibly talented.Best things Valve have done are mods and Steam.
Half Life and Left 4 Dead make me scratch my head and wonder.

Gravity gun, nuff said.
So inovative its been used in countless other fps games...Oh wait...
RareWare Revolutionized FPSs after Doom.
Think about it.
Golden Eye and Perfect Dark both have elements that Doom didn't have and are still used in todays FPSs.

-Doom 3 Ressurection of Evil

All high profile games, and they have a variation of the gravity gun.

Yeah having Valve help the modders with extra tools, support and recognition doesn't mean anything.
[QUOTE="Iantheone"]1. Valve 2. Bioware 3. Blizzard Killing Floor is better than L4D1 & 2. While Valve has made some very good games in the past they are on a bit of a decline with L4D. I think its time for Valve to move on to some new and more innovative ideas than just shooters.Aku101

HL is the most varied FPS on the market. They've made a puzzle game in Portal, three very different online games with CS, TF2 and L4D. I mean, what more do you want?[QUOTE="Aku101"][QUOTE="Iantheone"]

Portal might be a puzzle game, but Valve zipped it up to look like an FPS.
portal is a puzzle game, NOT a shooter[QUOTE="lazzordude"][QUOTE="Aku101"]
Starcraft 2 will be released soon. Even if it's not released yet Blizzard was still working on it so my original point still stands. All Valve does is make FPS after FPS. They don't know how to make any other type of game.
Aku101
First person view
You have a gun to shoot with
Portal is an FPS.
The most sig'd poster on SW strikes again! You think Valve is hurting themselves? LOL, what do you know about Valve and the inner-workings of the company?! You are so ignorant to even make that suggestion. A lot of companies stick to what they are good at, Valve is best at FPSs. If they want to make something else they will. it's as simple as that.[QUOTE="brandontwb"][QUOTE="Aku101"]
Valve is only hurting themselves by sticking to one genre. It's like an actor sticking to the same role in every movie or acting in the same types of movies every single time. Who's to say valve can't excel at RTS games?
Aku101
Or maybe because valve has no talent in anything other than FPS.
So? If you want a different genre then buy it from a different developer, its not that hard.Simbin only make Sims
Square Enix only makes JRPGs
Ferrari only makes sport cars
If you are good at something then stick with it and don't fail at another area.
Reason for me why i think valve is one of the best is the support to the community.
Countless mods for PC using the source engine some of which are better than alot of A and AA games=Priceless Also they do make great games although in that aspect i think there are a couple of better devs
Finally they made the best FPS ever ( ok ok puzzle ) called Portal ( 5-6 of the best hours of my videogame life ). Trully one of the best Videogames
Left 4 Dead breaks new ground certainly. It's a a pretty unique game actually. No other game has the same type of Versus play where you have to get to the end of the level with regenerating zombies and the same coop elements it has.brandontwbUm.....try Zombie Mod for CSS which has been out for years prior to the release of Left 4 Dead?
[QUOTE="Brownesque"]
Which both charge you and clobber the piss out of you...effectively, same concept.
And many of Left 4 Dead's enemies are just variations on the same idea....they grab you and attack you and your teammates have to free you. Incidentally, clots in Killing Floor are exactly the same thing.
In other words, been there, done that. Left 4 Dead breaks no new ground. The only reason none of you know this is because Killing Floor was an obscure mod by a developer none of you heard of whereas Left 4 Dead has the support of millions of lemmings who've never heard the word "mod" before....and because Valve distributes Killing Floor and Red Orchestra, which means any conflict of interest would affect both Tripwire's (developer of KF) and Valve's income.
HoolaHoopMan
Except that killing floor is piss poor compared to Left 4 dead. All you do is survive until everyone dies. They're objectives in L4D, crescendo events, both camping and running now.
Plus the Boomer doesn't do "Acid Damage" at all, it attracts the horde, something anyone who has even PLAYED the game know about. The similarities of the games are obivously there, but Left 4 dead stomps it into the ground, really hard.
Left 4 Dead has poor gunplay and poor cooperative mechanics. The extent of the infected is "uh oh he snagged your teammate, go help him!" In Killing Floor the cooperation extends to welding a door to create a chokepoint and holing in a territory, placing the various classes as to maximize their output, and focusing on the kind of Zed your class is best suited towards. Healing is important, sharing cash is important, and demo traps are important. The concept of "holing in" is more rigid in Killing Floor... In Left 4 Dead they call it "camping" and penalize you for it. I know that the boomer "attracts the horde," but in Killing Floor the horde is always after you so that would be kind of redundant don't you think? Seriously, though, the fact that Killing Floor has a variety of weapons with attributes that actually make each of them feel unique is something you can't find in Left 4 Dead. Even the difference between an AK-47 and a Bullpup is very pronounced. The cla ss system make it far deeper than Left 4 Dead. In Left 4 Dead all the weapons are just variations on the same concept....point your crosshair towards your target and hold down mouse 1 and your enemies health will drop. In Killing Floor you have AoE missiles with arming distance, grenades, the double barrel shotgun, high recoil high-caliber weapons, a crossbow, pipebombs, flamethrower...weapons that feel and act in a unique manner. There's a reason I played the demos for Left 4 Dead 1 & 2 about 4 times through between the two of them.[QUOTE="ThePRAssassin"]That kind of ridiculous negativity is never good for anybody. Not in your home life, not with your peers, and not with a larger community. I'm not surprised that Valve gets the free pass, thought I will never understand why. I'm still sore about the original ending to Half-Life 2. That was a special kind of bad. I'm not going to deny that Gabe's a fat tool. But that does not warrant the kind of ridiculous negativity that holds that just because Gabe is a fat tool that reflects poorly on the good things the company is doing. The spread sheet is a little imbalanced at this point. If you line up the bar graphs, best digital distribution service ever, insane mod support, free DLC, best value in game releases ever, consistent high quality productions, and compare that to "Gabe's a giant sack," I think it's a little heavy on the "Valve's a good developer side."The real question is how is that bad for the gaming community.
They don't like the PS3. Plenty of other developers were saying the same thing, only reason why they had a change of heart is because they don't have a fanbase. Valve has it's fanbase, and that's on the PC. It's not even worth spending time to learn how to develop for PS3 because they won't benefit from it in any way. Besides, doesn't every PS3 owner own an uber1337 PC?
Was it unprofessional? Sure, but it's not even a serious issue. PS3 is the one losing out on games because Sony tries to overcomplicate things.
musicalmac
That's quite a claim.muzik_mafiaAnd it's true. One moment you are running away from the Civil Protection, unarmed, running on top of building. Next you are going throw the city canals on a hoverboat, killing zombies with saws with the gravity gun, using the gravity gun to move objects to allow you to move throw sand and not get killed by antlions and then using the antlions to your favor to kill enemies. And Portal being in first person perspective makes it less of a puzzle game?
