Will PS4 be considered the greatest console of all time?

A lot of that had to do with the fact that the DS1 was not the standard controller, at least not for everybody; that, and Nintendo only having one analog stick (and widely emulated, at least for platformers) meant that the concept of the right stick as a camera stick was simply not as prevalent back then, sadly.

Its not even the best console this gen. The only reason why its selling so well is hype, and past mistakes of Nintendo and MS. Its sad when even the N64 is more interesting console than the PS4, at least the N64 brought something new to the table.

SNES > GameCube > N64

The PS4 is selling well because the market has grown, and because it is sucking slightly less than the Xbox One.

It doesn't have an important library of games. It doesn't do anything new or unique. It's remarkably average in every way.

I don't see how anyone would ever consider the PS4 as the best console ever.

The only area where the PS4 can be regarded as the best console is hardware, since it's currently the most powerful console. However, it didn't compare to a high-end PC upon release like previous PlayStation consoles did when they first released, so in that regard, it's worse than previous PlayStation consoles in terms of how powerful it is for its time.

I don't think that the PS4 is the best console of all time because:

1. It's the least selling Playstation home console as of now

2. Doesn't have a ton of exclusive killer apps, Bloodborne is a good one.

3. Powerful, but a PC is more powerful

4. Sure it's the best console this generation (We'll see about it once the NX comes out), but not of all time; that's the PS2's job.

*I have a Wii U and I love it and I would get a PS4 if I wanted, but I don't have the money for it.

It definitely has the potential to be with all the killer exclusives lined up for it and also if VR takes off

I only consider the SNES, PS1 and PS2 as great consoles. The PS4 has a bright future but getting in the realm of those giants will be hard.

Well at least it has chance unlike the WiiU and xbone which are already out for the count.

Considering the masses believe The Force Awakens is a good film, I'd say its possible for the ps4 to be remembered as the most important electronical device of the last 100 years.

Sure. To some gamers. Nobody agrees on the greatest console of time thus far, so there's no reason to assume at least some won't give the title to PS4 at some point. For me, it isn't about sales, but content. And PS4 is too young to call on that front - I'll have to wait until it is dead and gone to know what kind of amazing gems it had vs other systems over time. Right now - I like mine a lot but it isn't close yet on that front.

@Juub1990: doesn't matter what they agree with, facts are facts. 360 had more of an impact on the industry than PS2 did. The rise of indie games, western developers finally surpassing Japanese developers, the explosion of online gaming, streaming services, achievements, etc...MS may not have been directly responsible for all that but the 360 was at the forefront and leading the way. Sure, the Wii sold more and motion controls were a huge deal but looking at the industry now, no one cares about motion controls but the things the 360 helped establish, like online gaming, like Indies are still around and bigger than ever.

Ps2 was a great console that sold a lot and had great third party support but it didn't completely change the gaming industry the way the 360 did

Nope, all of the previous PS consoles will rank higher at this rate, as will most of Nintendo's consoles , aswell as the 360 and maybe the original Xbox too and Xbox one seems like it will be right next to it.

Like the Wii, it's gonna leave a bad taste in the mouths of millions of low info gamers who bought it on hype only to be super disappointed by what it actually delivered. Just sayin. :P

Selling well to a desperate gaming population starving for something new does not make the PS4 the best console ever.

The games will determine that and the PS4 has had nothing new and original, there's no innovation and there's nothing ground breaking. It has in fact had one good game, in two years, that's really nothing more than a reskin of a multi-platform game from the year before.

Put it this way, if the PS4 had good competition, it'd be shit. The only reason PS4 is a decent/good console is because the competition is so poor.

The lack of good competition is a big reason why the PS4 sucks compared to its predecessors. The lack of good competition has made Sony complacent.

It still lacks some truly great exclusives to reach the title. Bloodborne and inFamous are both great, but neither is special enough to make not having a PS4 a crime against gamingnity (I mean something like The Last of Us, Uncharted 2, Guns of the Patriots, Demon Souls... that kind of stuff).

But we have still 4 years ahead of us, Uncharted 4, The Last Guardian and Horizon Zero Dawn just around the corner... still plenty of time to get the gold. :)

Not even close. Just off the top of my head I'd put the Megadrive, Snes, N64, PS, PS 2 and Xbox ahead of it. Bloodborne is the only exclusive that you could call decent and, if you hate those types of games like me, there's absolutely no reason to own a PS4 whatsoever. This is the first generation that I haven't bought a console and I can't see that changing.

If you ignore the 2600, NES, SNES, Genesis? Maybe.

Some people will say it's the greatest console of all time, others will tell you it's the PS1 because it started the Playstation Series, others will claim it's the PS2 because it had some of the most legendary games to date, others will be in love with the PS3 because it had Fallout 3, the last of us and lots of other great entries.

What I am trying to say is that of course you can look at the sales numbers, but an opinion is always subjective (obviously lol).

Also, the PS5 has not been released yet. Gaming is becoming more and more popular, most children are growing up with electronics nowadays and almost every kid in first world countries owns some sort of entertainment system as opposed to 20 years ago, where only the lucky kids got a PS1. I bet the PS5 will outsell the PS4, simply because there are more and more people starting to play video games and it's becoming "mainstream". Some years ago, the gamer kids were the nerds. Now the kids who don't have minecraft are laughed at.

In what way is PS4 close to flawless?

• Clever hardware design (powerful enough and easy to develop for)
• Full third party support which translates in a massive library (514 games out now and according to metacritic, 336 quality ones)
• Redesigned controller. For some reason Sony used the original dualshock design for 3 generations, even when there were far better controllers out there.
• Better online service
• No mandatory casual peripherals. It's a core gaming console and a pretty good one at it.
• No overhype with nonsense like PS2's emotion engine or PS3's cell. Again, Sony just promissed a core gaming console, and delivered at that.

Not saying that the console is perfect, though. The menu/UI needs improvements, the standard HDD is too limited for the size of current games, still lacks some killer exclusives, etc, but overall it's an amazing console. Like i said, by far my favourite Playstation since the first one.

It's actually the worst Sony console at this point.

You have to compare gaming now to what it was when other consoles were out. Today, you have twitch, that at any given time of th day, has more than 500k viewers and as much as 6millioj plus for big events like LoL world tournaments. You have channels like ESPN and CW11 that now feature gaming information and even content like tournaments. In this day and age, mobile games are generating more money than consoles games; yet, mobile games is consider an early entry than console games. Today, video games is something that the people in 2003, who bought PS2 at age of 19 are now still playing games. The market for video games has exploded; it was one of few industries that did not get affect by the recession in 2007. To say the least, to compare sales of games today by those a decade or more ago is laughable. The market as a whole is huge.

i understand a company using this as way to show investors and consumers how something is "great". But hearing it from a poster, gives me the impression that you are an idiot.

PS2 and PS3 respective chips did eventually delivered. Since PS3 is more recently, I'll start there.
