"The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings accounted for the strongest series sales for the developer in 2011, moving over 1.1 million copies since its debut during May 2011. According to CD Projekt Red, 24 percent of those sales--or about 270,000--came through digital channels.

The first Witcher title, which shipped during 2007, sold over 400,000 units during 2011, the developer said."

http://uk.gamespot.com/news/the-witcher-franchise-sells-15-million-in-2011-6350775

I know I certainly got a physical copy.

Wonder how well it will do on the 360.

I think it'll do fine on 360, selling about 1.5 all year.

For a game of its quality, those sales are pretty poor. PC gamers need to buy more games.

Considering the complete lack of advertisingthroughout much of the world, that's fairly impressive. The only reason I knew of it was because I played the first, and I visit sites like these.

I sure hope you're joking. A game with zero advertising, no prequel, that's not a shooter and is made by an unknown developer selling well on consoles? When's the last time that happened?

The Witcher 2 spread through word of mouth through many gaming communities. Being a PC-only game, I'd say it did quite well.

Witcher 2 was relatively low budget (development and marketing) and it's a hardcore game, also take into consideration PC piracy. It's not easy to sell this well so quick on PC, only few developers can do it.

Only 25% were DD? I'm actually quite surprised. I was expecting atleast 40 or 50 percent. If we assume that on average they got 50% (a complete guess) of the price of a game (mix of retail and DD) for themselves, and we guess that the average price paid was $35 (this is being generous i think), then we can guess that the game generated $38,500,000 of sales, 50% of which went to CD Projekt which means they had revenues of $19,250,000 from the game. Then include the 400,000 that The Witcher sold and that pushes it well above $20,000,000. And this is all using dollars so it doesn't take into account the value of other currencies.

That is really good for less than a year in my opinion, especially when you consider they have GOG helping them out as well.

I certainly don't think they are hurting right now.

Have you even heard of CD Projekt before The Witcher 2? Exactly. Square Enix is a goddamned household name in Japan. CD Projekt is the definition of a lone developer who struck it big by making two phenomenal PC RPGs. If you can't understand the difference between the two devs and understand why comparing their game sales is unfair, there's no hope for you.

It will most likely sell less. The things is, if you want to make a successful game on consoles, you need proper marketing. And with the marketing budget that's available for CDPR it's not looking that good. And it's also worth noticing that the profit margin in DD sales is much higher than in retail sales. Especially those 40k GOG sales.

Very few actually make good money, PC gaming isn't a very profitble market. Not only because of the overwhelmingly rate of piracy, but also because PC is a nich market.

Define "good" and define "very few". The fact of the matter is, the PC is likely the largest platform for exclusive developers. It rivals 3 consoles and 2 handhelds in terms of exclusive developers.

At the end of the day, The Witcher 2 will likely receive a minimal advertising campaign due to the series being fully untested in consoles. Heck, Rise of the White Wolf (the port of the first) couldn't even attract a publisher.

1.1m in year - digital sales included - is very lackluster. i don't know why, but i don't think lousy marketing is the reason. the game didn't come out of no where. following its critically acclaimed predecessor, W2 was launched amidst strong media and fan anticipation.

more telling to me is the digital sales figure, which is surprisingly low imo. for years we pc gamers have been keeping our fingers crossed on the potential of digital distribution, claiming that behind every disappointing sales figure there's a huge, untracked volume through dd. well, one of the year's biggest exclusives managed to just rack in 300k. i'm not sure what that tells you... but to me, in terms of the financials, we seem to be running out of feel-good stories, let alone bragging right.

Well that's a shame, the game deserves more success. It's also a mature and very adult game from what I here, so it probably doesn't get mass appeal like alot of other games.

Very few actually make good money, PC gaming isn't a very profitble market. Not only because of the overwhelmingly rate of piracy, but also because PC is a nich market.

1.1 million is pretty nice though.

You make it sound as if consoles are a gold mine that has enough for everybody.

1.1 is very good for a game like TW2, it didn't have any marketing and only appealed to a certain community. Demon's Souls sold less.
