"Being the first to market with a next-gen console was a genius move by Microsoft, but as the years go on it's going to have to start paying the price. We're beginning to see the cracks now, the odd game here and there requiring an extra disc and before we know it, it's going to be industry standard. We can understand it when massive games like Blue Dragon or Final Fantasy XIII require more then one disc, but Dead Space 2? Really? DVDs are great, but in this day and age of super-duper HD visuals, clearly, BD's are going to have the edge - it's maths and you can't argue with maths."

So the PS3 version gets the game, and also exclusive rail shoot game all on one disc while the 360 needs two discs just for the game itself? I love blu-ray.

Link.

But we're gamers! How can we get up mid-game to do the arduous task of switching a dvd?

James161324

It's not the getting up your seat, but interrupting the experience(even though it's only for a little moment) Installing the game would fix this minor annoyance(though I won't lie, I prefer having the game in one disc).

You'd still have to change discs on the 360, even if you installed it.

I don't mind disc swaps, just like I don't mind installs. I just don't like overly compressed or downgraded cutscenes (FF13) or textures (Rage).

No wait. Is that link supposed to be a joke? They don't have any proof that the 360 won't have any MMOs and admited that FFXI is already on it. That like is outrageously stupid.

And people says Sony paid EA for Extraction... when the truth is, it wouldn't even fit in a single disc. It would've been 3 discs and that's not sexy at all.

Um...wheres the source?
you gave us a link to a dirty little secret thing and that source gives us no source showing us that dead space 2 is on 2 discs.

Hereissomeflaws with your source
""Live's closed network
It's closed, secure and safe and that's the way Microsoft wants to keep it - great for Microsoft, not so great for gamers. Having an open platform would put the 360 in line with the PS3 and PC. It would open it up to all sorts of weird and wonderful games currently epitomized on the PS3 with LittleBigPlanet. Cross communication with PC is the only real way the indie scene can thrive and right now Microsoft is throttling its potential. Portal 2 on the PS3 and PC is another great example of two open platforms able to communicate. With the 360 building a fence and sticking its fingers in its ears, the outside industry is simply going to pass it by; and though viruses and hacking are a possibility, the pros far out weigh the cons.""

Um yeah...Indie development is vastly more on the 360 then it is on the ps3...oh and by the way last I checked Black ops actually worked on 360...ps3? not so much...oh and banning people? last I checked we have heard that will be dead on ps3, hacks, and all sorts of things are going to be rampent because of the ps3 being hacked and because psn is ""open""

""No more MMOs on 360. Ever.
This is really connected with the strict hold Microsoft has over Live and everything that it grants players access to. Like a possessive father fretting over his daughter, Live is not permitted to fraternize with MMOs. 'But, what about Final Fantasy XI?' Yes, one MMO made it through, simply because of Microsoft's desperation to appeal in Japan. It's done with that now and MMOs generally result in yet another monthly charge and whole servers full of players obsessively engrossed in one game. How they supposed to buy the latest Halo if they're happy playing an MMO?""

Um based upon what? I never knew microsoft had announced we will never allow an mmo on our service where is their proof? they give us nothing to go on.
*heres a fun fact FF11 is playable on silver, Monster hunter freedom or whatever it is gives you an equal amount of gold time with the purchase of monster hunter time*

Those are just some of the flaws with the article in both of those areas they give us nothing at all to go on, no facts or sources or nothing, no where in the article do they explain how they know deadspace 2 is coming on 2 discs...

It was not. Not from a gaming standpoint, at least. It served its purpose, which was helping Sony win the format war, but avoiding disc-swaps is not really a positive income when added everything lost because of it.

Yes, Forza has the best install/game-run system.

It would pretty much screw all Arcade owners if a lot of games did that though, missing out on a good portion of a game because they don't have a HD, it would be different it HDDs were standard for the Xbox though.

I was taking the article seriously, then it talked about failure rates... Anyways, if Visceral took clues from Bioware or Turn 10, then it shouldn't be a huge deal. Annoyance for sure though.

I'm not doubting your statement, but what did the PS3 lose by using the Blu-Ray discs?iAtrocious

Money, marketshare and third-party exclusive support.

Having Blu-Ray is the biggest reason why the PS3 was so expensive at launch, which led to the massive difference in sales from the PS2 to the PS3. During that time the 360 built a very solid userbase, and that's why games believed/supposed PS3 exclusives (GTAIV, Assassin's Creed, FFXIII, Tekken, etc) ended in the 360. That's without saying how much money it was lost for selling the PS3 at a loss.

Part of the pre-hype/marketing popularized the idea that games were gonna get sooo big that they couldn't fit on DVDs, but now, more than 5 years into this gen, we can see that that's simply not true, since the vast majority of games fit on a single DVD, and the fewthat don't solve that problem easily with more.

It's the reason some games on the PS3 have mandatory installs, if some developers are to be believed.

When a publisher asks you to install a game on PS3, it's because they're moving some of the disc data to an area of your console that has much faster read access: the hard drive. You get vastly reduced loading times, but have to sit through an installation.

There are other ways to combat this, as we can infer from "Dark Sector," "Call of Duty 4," "Burnout Paradise" -- all multi-platform titles without installs. Based on conversations we've had with several developers, catering to Blu-ray is hardly impossible, but requires work. Some developers copy their game's data on the disc multiple times, giving the drive more areas to seek the same exact data from. Others spent time optimizing streaming techniques.

It's good Sony used bluray, the games that make use of this tech is increasing everyday. Switching discs is easy but could be inconvient, not to mention caring for 2 discs.

[QUOTE="IronBass"][QUOTE="iAtrocious"]I'm not doubting your statement, but what did the PS3 lose by using the Blu-Ray discs?lbjkurono23

So nothing to do with functionality?

Well, Blu-Ray discs read more slowly, and that creates a need for redundancies in code on the disc, and the occasional mandatory installation, which isn't so good. But beyond that, nope.

Not that I know of. I read something about the PS3 low reading speed, which is why some games have a mandatory install, but that's about it, I think.
