We pay for Xbox live because we want to play online, yes PC gaming is free, but that meens **** all to console gamers there are more problems with PC online games such as the modding and unfair advantage based on the users computer and peripherals ,Xbox Live is fair for everyone and £45/$55 isnt excatly breaking the bank heck the acedmy i attend gives me £100 a week just for attending lessons.

Xbox Live isnt perfect but its better then what other console offer albeit at a price, when psn and Wii network are as good as Xbox live i will expect the price the fall

ukillwegrill

Did you just put modding as a "problem"? what the hell?

Problem is XBL isnt hack resistant - thanks to 360 modders. Its closed network does suit a console, but honestly compared to the open network of a computer - it pales dramatically in comparison. And general use with a computer is just fine when it comes to hackers - free firewalls and virus scanners do the job perfectly - on a constantly open network. And as I said, as it is a closed network - this mean that there is going to be alot more bogged down netcode.

So you're saying they've modded 360's such that, even when modded, they are invisible to the moderators? Can you prove this? Because everywhere I go, I read news of Live lockouts because of modding, code signatures, etc. As for the netcode, isn't it Microsoft who provides the netcode as part of its XDK? Isn't that what leads to a good degree of its universality (the fact that just about every 360 game can use it)?

There are live lockouts, but there are workarounds. Its just as effective as PunkBuster and Vac - just saying. The modders - cheating - usually get busted, as do your general hackers on PC games - who usually rely on unsecure private servers.

This is all hardware related though for consoles. When it comes to griefers and glitchers - there is nothing you can do, as there is pretty much no moderation of XBL during games. Thus with PC online games its always great that there are server moderators and admins to monitor happenings.

As for netcode - i should have elaborated. I mean network the XBL servers are taking the entire load - and as we saw over early january - pretty much collapsed in on itself because it couldent take the server load - as it is a closed network. With PC games there is always distributed across different providers, or private hosts - and your ISP - so everything is spread out, rather than having all the load dealt with by a single provider.

XaosII

What kind of service makes you pay to change your name or even download a Demo!!!!

Ha what a joke, sucks to be a lemming. I mean having to pay for maps, p2p, ect

VoodooHak

So in other words, you have no idea what you're talking about.

Does his name suggest he has any knowledge related to XBL? Me thinks not.

[QUOTE="PS3_3DO"]Those dedicated servers are not free. Someone has to pay for those. Vandalvideo
But the end user doesn't. So free.

Clearly you haven't seen Lethal Weapon2.

Because you can't, without a doubt, state it's for gaming. You could just be some guy who decides to have a 3.2GHz Quad Core(OC'd obviously) with 4GB of RAM and an 8800 ULTRA dual SLi.

you could argue a person buying a PS3 is buying it for blue ray movies not games.

But you still have to start somewhere with file distribution, unless you actually hand-distribute said updates to a whole bunch of servers before ever making the file public. Anyway, Live does that, too (they do have geographic file servers). It's just that everyone got it at once, creating such a huge backlog that the regional servers got overloaded and shed to the other servers, and so on, until every server was swamped (at least, that was what I read about). It basically became an unintentional DDoS attack. Not even distributed PC architecture (open network and all) is completely proof against a large enough DDoS, especially if everyone calls for the same thing at the same time (which is what happened here).

File origination has always been the weak point of even P2P distribution. Distribution has to start somewhere, and if it's the somewhere that gets choked up, no amount of load sharing is going to dent the fact that no one can get the whole thing (sorta like a store mob going after the last of that hot fad).

PC's online is odviously better, but its not a fair comparison.. The PC has had a ever evolving online sense the mid 90's.. A unified console online service is relatively new. What the console has with ease of use and accessability, the PC replaces with immense customizability, the use of mods, far larger scope in options and usually multiplayer size..

Its a trade off I think they are both great to use.. But lets face it people you can not compare them.. On one hand you have Xboxlive compared to countless multiplayer services from gamespy, steam, battle.net, mmos, etc etc.. Its as bad as people trying to pit the PC against the 3 home consoles and 2 handhelds all at once.. Stupid.

Its all about ease of use and a unified service. Yes Id prefer it to be free, but Id prefer to pay than not have it.cakeorrdeath
Very well said. So in order PC online>Xbox LIVE> PSN. Simple as that, Wii online don't even get me started on that subject. They have no clue how to implement it correctly yet.

So the question you have to ask yourself is, "Which is more important for the average gamer? Simplicity or diversity? Since the two have at least some mutual exclusivity, getting both at once may prove excessively difficult. Forced to choose, which is better long term?"

Well I am odviously bias being a pc gamer.. I feel pc gaming is more long term due to the huge options it has.. Now it may be complicated in SOME areas depending on what you want to do.. Most times it can be as simplistic as Xboxlive.. Take counter strike Source for instance.. You go in double click the server youw ant to join and your in...

One thing I do like about Xboxlive is the random match ups in Halo 3, something that I really have only see rts's online to be doing.. That being said most games now a days are easy to set up for online play.. Take CoD4 on the pc it takes all of 4 seconds to make a account and join a server.. People seem to be overblowing the subject..

There is one huge minus of mine though, is no split screen for the pc.. I absolutely loe split screen online with games such as Halo 3 and Marvel Ultimate alliance.. When it comes down to it though the pc is odviously better, which it should be with the years and years it has had to develope over the consoles.. The console online still has alot to improve on.
