And saying that sales are losing momentum rapidly is incorrect from the evidence I've heard/seen... I've seen reports that there were more XB1s sold in the second half than PS4s (especially since release of Slim). And according to the manager at my local EB Games here in Aus, they sold a lot more XB1s over Xmas than PS4s (including Pro - which he said has bombed).

@quadknight: Since the Slim has come out, Xbox has beaten PS4 in sales in various countries, including here in Aus. The second half would have been alot closer than you PS fangirls think.

Didn't XB1 "win" three straight months towards the end of last year when they released XB1 S? Even if the numbers are off by a few million, that's got to make you pause if MS are unable to break 30 mil in over three years The fact that MS won't release any definitive numbers about consoles sold tells you all you need to know about that. The final Mega Drive/Genesis sales numbers are unknown, but somewhere around 36-40 million. However, the final tally doesn't tell the whole story. The Mega Drive lost Japan, but won the West. What gave the SNES a sizable lead in worldwide sales (49 million, about 9-13 million more) was the wide margin by which it destroyed the Mega Drive in Japan (14 million gap), whereas the Mega Drive won the West by only a small margin (roughly 1-5 million gap).

Comparing hardware unit sales from different eras is meaningless, for a number of reasons. Since the Mega Drive's launch, the world population has increased by nearly 50%, while the video game industry is at least twice as large as it was back then. But more importantly, what determines financial success and failure is the revenues and profits it generates for the company. With the Mega Drive, Sega was rolling in cash. With the X1, Microsoft's Xbox division is losing money for the company. While the Mega Drive initially sold at a loss, it broke even by the time the SNES launched and was making a profit on hardware, while also making sizable profits on software (the $60 average cartridge price back then is equivalent to $120 today). The X1 is still making losses on hardware to this day, and isn't selling enough software to make up for it. The software sales is what really counts, not just hardware sales.

I gotta ask is the Xb1 mostly just a multi Plat box like the 360 before it. Normall that's OK but it may mean not getting popular or niche exclusives

Wish MS would release official numbers so we have more accurate numbers instead, oh well. But what I find interesting, even at the numbers SuperData have listed, is that every now and then, Xbox One games whether they're multiplats or exclusives, outsell PS4 games whether they're multiplats or exclusives. It just shows you these companies continue to thrive no matter who's "ahead", business is booming!

I'm mostly a cow and I don't see how anyone's celebrating this. Unless you want Sony to continue screwing people with PS Now, no UHD-Blu ray and absolutely zero backwards compatibility you better hope MS starts making it competative.

It didn't cost that much to develop, but that's close to how much it would've almost cost to manufacture cartridges. The game itself wouldn't have cost more than $1 million to develop, but to manufacture those 40 million cartridges, it would've cost over $200 million.

However, there wasn't much risk involved to manufacturing costs, as they didn't manufacture the cartridges immediately, but gradually over the years to meet demand. Atari made that mistake on the 2600, manufacturing millions of Pac-Man and ET cartridges upfront, with most left unsold, suffering huge losses as a result and almost crashing the industry. Nintendo played it safer, waiting it out to see how much demand there is, and then manufacturing cartridges to meed the demand. In comparison, today's AAA games spend around $100 million to develop upfront, with no guarantee of success, so there is much greater risk involved to development costs today, compared to cartridge manufacturing costs back then.

Both Sony and MS have committed to BC this gen, and I reckon we'll see that paying off for both going forward. By not culling their entire library and shifting pasture every 6 years, they've hopefully laid the grounds for a decent ecosystem to develop. There's no reason for classic games to be exclusive to dead systems - 12 years on and that same copy of Half Life 2 is still a system seller to some.

MS should either become really competitive or leave. Competition is good but not weakass competition like they are doing now.

The Xbone as it is doesn't have any real exclusives and MS doesn't seem to care about creating new IPs. Sure they say they are committed to delivering the "best lineup ever" every year but none of their actions shows they actually are. They keep cancelling games and closing down studios. One reason I respect Nintendo as competition to Sony even though they aren't doing well currently in the console space is that they are actually committed to delivering on games. MS seems okay with coasting by on multiplats and relying on the same 3 tired HaloForzaGears trinity. If that's all they plan to give gamers they should just kill off the Xbox and make those games multiplat as I'm sure those franchises will continue to be successful whether they are on Xbone or not, and make room for another competitor like Samsung. Settling for mediocrity so that we can say Sony has competition isn't the way forward. Sony should actually have good quality competition IMO.

Good to see PS4 selling so well... means I'll be able to get a used one for real cheap someday when nobody wants theirs anymore :D

If they don't announce new IPs and a greater focus on games going forward I don't see a change. New hardware is nice but what really pushes the needle is games. They'd better bring the games this E3.

well. that is always the problem with MS.. Halo/Gear/Forza cycle is not a joke. That is big reason why I'm not buying Xbox this gen. They need to pay up for some games that only Xbox has other wise I will skip the Scorpio as well as I don't have 4K TV so 4K means shit to me!

Well the launch of the console doomed them from the start. They've spent much of the gen so far backpedalling from the backlash. While they did a pretty good job getting away from those terrible policies, the damage was already done. You already have Nintendo appealing to casuals and Nintendo fans, PS with the more world wide appeal with more exclusives and being a bit stronger (plus they stole big 3rd party support from MS like CoD), and the PC of course, there wasn't a ton of reasons to buy an Xbox unless you're a big Forza, Halo, and Gears of War. Microsoft needs to hit on more new IPs and exclusives. But I'm not sure if they can ever match Sony or even Nintendo outside of NA.

In saying that, when you're a console that has little to no appeal anywhere but the NA and UK, worldwide sales looking around that number wouldn't surprise me at all. I think the ones stated here are a little generous actually.

This is the geek in me coming out but it seems like each console's sales is a multiple of the Wii U's: multiply Wii U sales by 2 to get Xbone's and multiply them by a little over 4 to get PS4's.
