@gifford38:

The whole "100GB of instantly accessible assets" is just marketing speak is just simply virtual memory mapping, allocating 100GB of SSD space as virtual memory. Cartridge based consoles pretty much used their cartridges as virtual ram for games.

@gifford38: With the level of detail and quality of assets going on in that demo, raytracing wouldn't be feasible in real-time. Of course given that that demo was a very I/O and Geometry Heavy demo, the XSX would only be able to run it as much lower level of detail.....

Because the SSD renders the geometry right?😂

@Pedro: Nope just simply loading in assets into memory so that the GPU can render it (which is slower on the XSX side) lol.

Game cartridges are ROM based which is read-only.

Now address how this affects the system's ability to render detail.

The triangle geometry at pixel resolution at mostly 1440p resolution at 30 fps gimped PS5's GPU.

they are using the ssd to render in more triangles as the game is in motion. i been telling xbox fans about this but told me the ssd is just for loading games. in other words the ssd is used as ram pool.

Sony will not close the gap of 3 teraflop difference by utilizing a better SSD. There was merely half TF difference last gen and well there six times the difference this gen

PS5 GPU is clearly overclocked. Microsoft could manage it too but the system would be damn hot overclocking the stock frequency.

Devs might be to pull assets faster off the the SSD, but GPU still has to draw this stuff on screen., and PS5 less capable,

If the ssd helps the ps5 so much why is the tech demo running 1440p/30fps ? Pc gamers have had ssd's for a decade now. Its not new technology and nothing new. Why is it now a gamechanger for the ps5 ?

Sony promoting this new lighting in unreal engine 5 because there console sucks for Ray Tracing,

Xbox one closed the gap towards the end of the gen, obviously DX12 helped a bit.

Games Jumped from 900p to 1080p the last few years. The PS4 only won at the beginning with Xbox 720p games.

What do you mean DX12 helped a bit? On the original xbone, from 2017 until now, almost everything runs extremely poorly. What saved the day is XboneX, not DX12. Games jumping from 720p to 900p while having severe fps drops isn't much helping.

I don’t concur with that at all as Assassin Creed game ran better on the Xbox one, it had a better CPU. Most CPU heavy games ran better on the Xbox one.

Every game was 720p for years at the beginning, then there was an obvious boost to 900p and above later. That can only be when the development driver became better and devs could uitilse it.

There was an unmistakable gap at the start of the gen with xbox 720p and PS4 1080p.

Interview with Epic, while they did mention PS5 directly (almost like they have been asked too). They also said features where available to other next gen and PC.

"The demo is demonstrating the highest level of quality, which is available on PlayStation 5 and other next-generation hardware."

"But it has major new graphical features targeted at a new generation of hardware, defined by PlayStation 5. These capabilities are also coming to PC and elsewhere."

"Nicholas Penwarden: Some of it just advances in the speed of the hardware, the CPU and GPU, as well as the new I/O capabilities of the next generation of platforms, allowing us to stream in a lot more data on the fly. One of the things that Nanite does is it only keeps the actual triangles in memory that you need around you. When you have scenes with tens of billions of triangles, it wouldn’t be practical to have all that data in memory at once. You need to be able to stream that in dynamically as the viewpoint moves around."

"In this case it’s the SSD and other hardware features in the next-gen consoles that enable that."

"We’ve been working super-closely with Sony for quite a long time on the storage architecture and other elements. It’s been our primary focus. But Unreal Engine 5 will be on all next-generation platforms, and so will Fortnite."

There is quite a lot of we worked with Sony there console is awesome which they would say if they have worked with them closely. However they also say the features demonstrated are coming to other next gen consoles (ie Xbox) and PC.

Kudos for Sony getting the tech demo out on PS5 and its pretty evident they cant mention Series X.

Personally, i bought two Samung EVO's, taped them together, and i get at least 20 more frames in DX12 games. I see where Sony is going with their super charged ssd.

Reality is Sony expected MS to have a corresponding machine and it’s the reason they invested heavily in a better SSD. They needed another talking point to make their machine seem different to xbox console. MS did not play along and went further and developed a 12 TF monster. There no way PS5 closing the gap when the reality is the PS5 GPU overclocked. That GPU going to be a nightmare for devs because the clocks are not persistent and will be up and down depending on which of the two systems need the power the most, the CPU and GPU. With heavy load and load of processing on screen, it be a 9 TF somethiing machine.

Harddrive stores data, it does not magically give you extra frames. The frame rate is bound to the GPU and CPU.

It's unknown for XSX since MS only reveals Gears 5 (Unreal Engine 4+) and Forza Horizon 4 performance results.

There's no "hot chips" lecture to reveal the actual details for XSX GPU.

We already know Gears 5 wasn't friendly for AMD GPUs.

XBO's DirectX11.X API started with limited access to async compute which later unlocked.

XBO's APIs started with manual tile render or manual split render, later APIs has automatic split render i.e. concurrent render to DDR3 and ESRAM memory pools.

XBO API improvements don't resolve GPU's ALU bound situation.

https://segmentnext.com/2020/05/14/coalition-eager-show-unreal-engine-5-xbox-series-x/

While we haven’t seen how the engine will run on the Xbox Series X yet (since Epic Games is in a marketing deal with Sony that caused them to debut the engine on that console), considering the Series X is more powerful than the Playstation 5, Unreal Engine 5 may look just as good, if not even better.

Marketing deal with Sony to bring a tech demo.

https://www.trustedreviews.com/news/gaming/epic-games-claims-that-ps5s-ssd-is-better-than-xbox-series-x-and-high-end-pc-4031748

A demo version of Unreal Engine 5 will become available early next year, with the full engine becoming available later in the year – but the initial wave of next-gen games won’t run on the system.

Games not using it for at least a year after console launch.

I wonder how much Epic games have been paid to big up PS5

Do you realize triangles at pixel resolution with an AMD GPU hardware is not a wise move?

EPIC has claimed RTX 2070 Super (entry-level TU104) running the same UE5 demo has "pretty good performance".

https://www.pcgamer.com/unreal-engine-5-tech-demo/

Would this demo run on my PC with a RTX 2070 Super? Yes, according to Libreri, and I should get "pretty good" performance.

The last time a game with pixel density triangles has gimped AMD GPUs into oblivion.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYL07c74Jr4

On the PC, AMD used driver side intercept API calls to limit excessive tessellation from NVIDIA's Gameworks.

Vega 56/Vega 64/VII has four triangles input with four triangle output per clock cycle.

NAVI 10 has eight triangles input with four triangle output per clock cycle, hence blackface culling is working, but raw geometry power remains Vega GCN like.

I don't understand why AMD is not increasing geometry power by more than 2X.

Because the SSD renders the geometry right?😂

what i did find out even the series x ssd can bring in 100 gp of assets at any giving moment. now sony ssd is supposed to do more than that. making there ssd so close to the i/o made there ssd be able to stream these assets in frame by frame. the gpu still renders it but the data is not in the gpu until they need to. leaving the gpu open to render what is needed in that frame. sony ssd also has 12 tiers instead of 2 tiers thats in low end ssd.

Note that XSX has 1TB SSD storage for game data storage + virtual memory pages.

100GB refers to virtual memory paging which is different from game data storage.

@gifford38: With the level of detail and quality of assets going on in that demo, raytracing wouldn't be feasible in real-time. Of course given that that demo was a very I/O and Geometry Heavy demo, the XSX would only be able to run it as much lower level of detail.....

Because the SSD renders the geometry right?😂

what i did find out even the series x ssd can bring in 100 gp of assets at any giving moment. now sony ssd is supposed to do more than that. making there ssd so close to the i/o made there ssd be able to stream these assets in frame by frame. the gpu still renders it but the data is not in the gpu until they need to. leaving the gpu open to render what is needed in that frame. sony ssd also has 12 tiers instead of 2 tiers thats in low end ssd.

Would this demo run on my PC with a RTX 2070 Super? Yes, according to Libreri, and I should get "pretty good" performance.

no way in hell would I believe that only the ps5 can run this tech demo. what impressed me is the fact they got this much detail with the ps5 gpu that is suppose to be weak because its only 10 instead of 12 teraflops. the fact is they got it to render at 8k textures on a console. even when series x is doing this as well it's still a great leap in performance that only pc gamers seem to experience.

EPIC reduced PS5 like a PS4 Pro with geometry detail at the pixel level 1440p resolution, RDNA 2's geometry performance doesn't look good at all when compared to NVIDIA's geometry detail at the pixel level.

AMD didn't increase the raw geometry power for NAVI 10 (PS5 GPU is effectively NAVI 10 with RDNA 2 changes) which still sports four geometry units, but with 8 triangle inputs with four triangles output per clock cycle while Vega 56/64/VII has four triangle inputs with four triangles out-put per clock cycle. Raw geometry power remained four geometry units but with working backface culling function.

XSX GPU's 56 CU scaled RDNA 2's raw geometry power is unknown.

PS5 will need VRS with GE to conserve geometry resources.

AMD place it's geometry hardware at shader engine-level not at CU level

NVIDIA placed it's geometry hardware at CU (aka SM) level, hence NVIDIA GPU has extremely high raw geometry power since each CU has geometry hardware (polymorph engine).

Review mech shaders (GE) demo from NVIDIA's pov https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRfZYJ_sk5E(4K 60 fps)

8k textures is nothing new my guy. Sometimes you go straight 8k on a texture. Sometimes you do the equivalent resolution by applying 4 different 4k materials to an asset. Same exact result in resolution.

Shit, back in 2015/2016 I was authoring 16k textures, but it was too much of a drag on workflow and just wasn't efficient at all. Made more sense to do 4 x 8k maps instead.

Last interior environment project I wrapped up a few months back had 80 8k texture sets in UE4. 17 of those 8k texture sets were applied to a single asset (the main structure). And this was for a relatively small space, not like these assets were spread over a large map, most of these assets were in view at all times.

Point being, this shit is nothing new or groundbreaking lol.

ok show me a current gen game on ps4 and xbox one that has 8k textures. no indie games. AAA titles.

im not saying the pc world of course they had 8k textures but how many games is there maybe a few games can pull it off.

Yeah, plenty man. I'm only informing you, not doing your homework for you.

That being said, you're just falling for another buzz word anyways. Sounded great hearing them say 8k textures in that demo right? Mission accomplished for them I guess.

Most game artists will still go for multiple texture sets that equal 8k instead of just authoring 8k. Even VFX studios that aren't limited by processing have largely gone the same route as it's often times more efficient for workflow. It's an asset by asset case of course, but more often than not you'll see 4 x 4k rather than just a single 8k. Same exact results.

Sony paying for exclusive demos now LMFAO.

Also it didn't even run at 1440p all the time, and cows think the SSD is magic.

you do realized the footage was uncompressed and they ran it off the ps5 without optimizing it. they took there demo that they created on there pc then hooked it up to the ps5 and it ran at 1440p/30.

I didn't think it could run on PC due to the SSD not being good enough.

If it was produced on PC and therefor can run on PC there is no reason why it wont be as good on Xbox SeX if not better

I'm sure it can but I want to know if there is a trick they used on the ps5 to get billions of triangles with there ssd like they said they did or is it just mumbo jumbo from sony.

I wan to know if this new break through in the ssd will make a difference like they say they have.

I am a huge sony fan but after the cell even though this is totally different is it for real.

Its all PR, Sony is pushing too sell a product.......Epic and Sony have been buddy buddy lately...

The rendering of triangles is almost all on the gpu not on how "fast" the SSD is. You have to take TECH demos with a grain of salt because it never translates into games with same amount of detail. We can look at Nvidia and AMD tech demos for every new gpu architecture. Or any company making game engines showcasing them .... They look amazing but the real world scenarios you can never achieve the same amount of quality with a complex and dynamic gaming world. Think of it as a cinematic cut scene where they use the best assets vs what you get ingame.
