I didnt get a chance to get into the beta test but any FPS game Ive played since Quake 2 Ive always bound a key for each weapon, or weapon type. Ie: one key for primary weapon one for grenades one for secondary one for melee.. Why on earth would you stick to the default scroll menu? Can't you bind weapons to keys in QW?Mrnebbie

Oh, yeah, you can bind the keys. But, here's how the weapons cycling works: When you cycle through your weapons you must press the "primary fire" button to finalize the selection, otherwise you don't switch weapons. (using the numeric keys does a "quick swicth", though) My problem lies in that I don't like having to switch to grenades in order to throw them. I like FEAR's method of being able to press "g" to throw grenades, even when you have you guns selected and equiped. I used SW: Battlefront II as an example because SW:BF2 has controls similar to FEAR's, yet is an MOFPS like Quake Wars.

I don't think Quake Wars is bad, I actually thoroughly enjoyed the beta. Sure, the textures are limited in the beta, but its a beta and the download is only ~800MB (and the install is roughly 800MB too). I really liked the objectives (there are primary and secondary objectives), as it creates a central point for the combat. The sides seem well balanced and the vehicles are powerful, yet (unlike Battlefield 2) the vehicles are reasonably easy to take out using ground troops. I just wish there was a "throw grenade" key, instead of having to switch to grenades. Perhaps Splash Damage will chnage this. I hope so!

Anywho... thanks for the responses, everyone!

A friend of mine recently bought Star Wars: Battlefront II, and I enjoyed it so much I bought the PC version. I've also recently been playing the Quake Wars open beta and I can't help but notice the similarity of QW's objective-based gameplay and SW:BF2's campaign mode.

However, SW:BF2 shines in comparison on the control scheme. QW still suffers from the problem that Doom3 and many other FPS games suffer from: having to cycle through your weapons to arm and throw grenades. I also find the fact that you must "verify" (press the "primary fire" button to actually switch) your weapons when cycling.

It seems that Battlefront II got it right on the controls and on the objective-based combat (even though only the campaign is objective-based). Is it just me, or is having to cycle to grenades and click to arm them before you can throw them extremely annoying? Personally, I like FEAR, Far Cry, and SW:BF2's method of having a seperate key to throw grenades. It makes things a lot easier, IMO, during hectic online battles.

Any opinions on what games Quake Wars could learn from to make its gameplay better? Do you guys enjoy the objective-based missions? ANy opinions on SW: Battlefront II?

The Guild Emblemer is in the primary city of each campaign (Prophecies=Lion's Arch, Factions=Kaineng Center, Nightfall=Kamadan), and, yeah, capes cost 2k. To get a guild hall, you need a to talk to a Canthan Ambassador (they will be near the docks area in each of the 3 major cities) and ask him to take to one of the islands. Once there you can purchase a Celestial Sigil from the Sigil Trader. Travel to the island you like the most and give the Canthan Ambassador your Sigil. Keep in mind that getting and fully outfitting a guild hall is expensive. The sigil alone is 24k and the upgrades for your hall (Xunlai, merchants, etc) cost 10k and up. The best thing is to ask your guild mates to chip in. If you don't have any guild mates, then I wouldn't really recommend a guild hall, unless you just have the money to blow. Also, a guild MUST have a cape before it can have a hall.

Exanimus is the only thing I cn think of right now. Exanmius is a multiplayer survival/horror online FPS where a small team of humans must survive against a horde of zombies. Players can be either one of the few survivors or a zombie. Sounds like a fun game.

What it means, in a nutshell, is that something in the game in trying to call a command and isn't finding it in your C++ Runtime Library. Typically this has something to do with Kernel32.DLL, ans usually involves viruses. However, this may not necessarily be the case.

First; go and update to Direct X 9.0 http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/directx.html

Second; go and update your graphic card's drivers.

ATI:http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

NVidia:http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

Third; go and downlaod and install a new set of runtime library files. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/259403

Fourth and final; run a sweep with some spyware tools, such as Spybot, AdAware, and SpyWare Doctor. If you don't have SpyWare Doctor, then get it. A good scan with any online virus scanner will be fine or if you have a decent and update Anti Virus program, then use that. Also make sure to run a registry cleaner, like CCleaner. You may need to run CCleaner several times in a row to sufficiently clean out your registry.

Hopefully that will help. If not, good luck to you, as you may need to reformat your HDD and reinstall your XP for things to get back into working order.

awesome game, but its not optimized very well so it may get a little glitchyBenTheJamin
LucasArts is notrorious for being penny-pinching tightwads and not wanting to patch their games. It took a whilst for the KotOR patches to come out, but they do help. As far as I can tell, the only thing the patches really fixed was the severe slowdown/stutter problem on Taris.

Buy KotOR as soon as you can. It's totally woth it!

As far as Obsidian goes, I don't think they really care if they're as good or better than Black Isle, considering many of them used to work there. I think that all they want to do is make fun games. Making an RPG is rough to do, and sometimes the end result doesn't wind up pleasing all of the fans. Personally, I've found NWN2 to be a very fun game that looks spectacular.

In other words, stop comparing Obsidian to Black Isle. I doubt Obs cares to try to live up to some crazy, unreasonable expectation of greatness that Black Isle has gained throughout years of fandom. Is Obsidian the best RPG developer ever? No. But there's no need to compare them to Black Isle. Black Isle is defunct and no longer makes titles, and OE seems to more interested in making games than in trying to live up to people's expectations that they be a reincarnate of a former, highly acclaimed RPG developer. Compare OE's games on their own merit, not against the expectations of an idealised, championed, and heralded former softhouse.

What I've been saying for a long time is that console makers need to get to work on a low footprint gaming only OS. You buy the Playstation 4 OS and install it. When you want to play Gran Turismo 6 or Metal Gear Solid 5, reboot into your Playstation OS and play away.

Personally, I find the notion of making consoles "more PC-like" to be just silly. I don't want my console to be more like computer, I want my computer to be able to play games using a slimlined OS that makes maximized use of my hardware.
