Doesn't everyone know this by now?

Everyone hates the latest gen Zelda, and adores the previous Zelda. It's happened almost consistently. Look at Wind Waker, on release there was nothing but negativity. When Twilight Princess was released, everyone thought it sucked and loved Wind Waker. The same thing is happening now, everyone hates Skyward Sword (I'm still not sure why) and adores Twilight Princess.

I think you've got this backwards dude. Nintendo's games, while they may be the same franchises always include stacks of new game mechanics. The gameplay in the games is new for each iteration. If you look at games like Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Pikmin, etc. While they may include the same core mechanics, there's always many new elements to the gameplay. Compare this to games like COD which has been the same game since 3 or 4, uncharted which barely changed from 2 to 3, gears of war which had ever so minor changes, god of war which has been more or less exactly the same, project gotham racing which I don't think has changed, any of the elder scrolls games are all still terrible games, fable hasn't changed or changed for the worse, halo hasn't changed all that much.

That's not to say that these games aren't good games (apart from the elder scrolls series. All disastrously terrible) it's just to say that Nintendo's franchises change hugely and if you can't see that, I don't think you've been playing them.

Yes skyrim is a terrible game, everyone here knows it.

I seem to remember that Skyward Sword actually beat it in spike's player's choice, but because spike is so horribly biased, they claimed it down to rabid fans voting. It won and they dismissed it as if it didn't exist, which is a travesty because it was far more deserving of GOTY than that abomination of a "game" skyrim.

They've been immensely successful in the past with copying console controllers haven't they?

This happens every single gen...early games normally never look as good as later ones due to devs knowing how to make better graphics as time goes by.

mitu123
Said perfectly. Early 360 games looked barely better than original Xbox games. ps3 games looked far superior until sony's gargantuan list of lies caught up with them, then games started to look like crap. Nowadays, if you take a look at Halo 3 or Warhawk or any of those earlier titles, they look last gen as hell compared to the stuff we're seeing today. The current Wii U stuff is by and large on par if not slightly more impressive than 360 and ps3 stuff at the moment, thus I'm sure by the time that ps4 and 720 roll around (btw prepare for disappointment) the Wii U will likely be on par. Sony's not going to sell ps4 the same way they did ps3, they saw how terribly that went, plus with the added stress of vita failing miserably, I'm doubtful that they'll want to risk much. The 720 is going to be a kinectbox, let's all just admit it; it's going to happen. I don't think that Microsoft is going to blow us away very much with vastly expensive tech because kinect is very casual-orientated and casuals are definitely not the people who judge graphics well (they think cod looks good) I also think that with Wii U being first out the gate and devs will invest first in this, it'll make sony and microsoft aim for the same level in power because that means that they'll be able to get ports and jump on the Wii U's success. Cows and Lems, Don't get too excited for photorealism next gen, I'm extremely doubtful.

New IP would be nice, but first I want to see them tend to a lot of their ignored IPs. Star Fox is in desperate need of a decent developer, the last few entries have been disastrous and the story is all over the place. Star Fox 64 3DS was awesome, but please Nintendo, keep it up, make another. Make it your online 3rd Person Shooter which shows off how awesome Nintendo Network is. Make it like Star Fox Assault meets Uncharted, because that Uncharted style gameplay is all the rage at the moment, plus we've seen that Fox has some moves in both SSB and Star Fox Adventures.

Star Fox has all the makings of a killer franchise, except for the fact that it's pawned off to developers who don't do it justice and ruin the story and gameplay. You can do better.

Please dear lord let Retro be working on Star Fox Wii U.

There's a screenshot somewhere which was used to describe the Miiverse's social networking thing which had a message saying something along the lines of "Yay I cleared a course in under 100 seconds" and then above it in a yellow/gold bubble was achievement-looking text saying "cleared course in under 100 seconds" I'd say this is a relatively clear indication that there's going to be achievements on Wii U. Ultimately I think we'll have to wait to see the interface in greater detail, which can't come soon enough, but despite Nintendo's constant speeches of how they just do whatever they think will be best for gaming, I find it difficult to believe that they aren't going to include achievements with the Wii U. Wii Sports Resorts essentially had achievements, Metroid Prime 3 definitely had achievements, Super Smash Bros basically started the achievements concept, Xenoblade Chronicles has 'em in almost entirely replicated achievements style.

I wouldn't get overly confident, but I'd say it wouldn't be a bad bet that the Wii U does have achievements.

I really hope they are, but I'm pretty sure they aren't. It's sad but likely. What they've got so far is actually pretty good considering launch window, typically launch window games kinda suck so when they start announcing some more awesome stuff, then I'll hop aboard the bandwagon. Until then, there's plenty of Wii games I have yet to finish. Thanks project rainfall.

I'm just hoping that 3rd parties really take advantage of the tech in the Wii U, but I do feel that Nintendo needs to show 3rd parties what is expected of them and how they are supposed to utilize the unique aspects of the controller. Stuff like the panorama demo looks freaking awesome and hopefully games like Ghost Recon Online from last year really shows how online is awesome and works. Oh what would be the greatest game to launch Wii U with would be Bioshock Infinite. I could see that happening, since it's been delayed and we haven't heard anything for a while, but I do remember saying that it's delayed till 2013, so there's also a big possibility that it won't make launch.

Either way, it's still Nintendo, and their increasing look at catering to the "hardcore" crowd means that I'm sure they will focus on putting out titles that appease them.

The casual stuff they're putting out at the moment looks a lot like they're all just tech demos for the console because I think that they wanted to really prove what the console can do so that people understand that at launch, and then once they've got the console in people's hands, then they'll push some awesome games. Let's hope it starts with Pikmin 3 and carries on to Star Fox, Metroid, F Zero, 1080 (I can dream), Pokemon and hey why not add a few online-based games like an exclusive shooter or something.
