I've been doing the same- buying up all those games I overlooked during the system's prime. If Sony continues with the 2 as they did with the original Playstation, it will indeed be supported right up until the PS4 hits.

Still have a 2600 somewhere kicking around but never felt I had a collection that contained the best the system had to offer. Actually I've pined for a lot of the titles you mention in your list now that you mention it.

More recently I picked up an Activision collection for PS1 about a decade ago.. It consisted mainly of 2600 classics. Decent but not quite the same.

Man I've had the ambition on multiple occasions but can't seem to complete the task. I must have about 60 of 198 for the Dreamcast but that's a far cry from completion. I like to think nobody ever finishes collecting for a system, they merely run out of funds, motivation or time haha.

Marty for sure- I was super active in the industry during the 32/64-bit era and still never heard of this thing till recently.

I wouldn't put too much stock in what Gamestop does- Sony and the third parties say the PS2 will continue being supported until further notice. Good enough for me.

Somehow I managed to plot a course that led to me supporting (being stuck with) many of the "road less traveled" consoles but even still the Neo Geo and CD-i have always eluded me. I really wanted to log some time on the Neo Geo back in the early 90's fighting game era!

Experienced the same thing- A few years ago I picked up a 42" 1080p to finally catch up with the times only to discover it was the nail in the coffin for my PS2. As others have stated, you can lessen the stretch-factor a bit by tweaking your aspect ratio and upgrading your connection cords but at the end of the day, consoles with higher output become the only real option to capitalizing on your new screen's capibilitties. I justified the upgrade to the PS3 on account of the fact that I planned to pick up a Blu-ray player as well.

However, since my PS3 (slim) isn't backward compatible, the old 27" CRT came back out in the basement so that the PS2 could live on. One step forward, two steps back around here :\

Well unlike PC gaming, where companies make money on the hardware itself, the console industry has the whole "give the razor away to make money on the blades" business model to consider. It wouldn't surprise me to witness some pretty hardcore specs for well below what it costs the manufacturers to produce. Like always, it'll be the games that make or break em.
