Also I'm surprised there's noone talking about Crysis yet in this thread. Usually hermits are attrected like fliesto the lightin threads like these to claim their "Crysis PWNS all" ownage.

The truth hurts ;)

Not denying Crysis is the best looking game out there. It's just sad that some people like to repeat it over and over again.

That can't be helped if its the answer to a question that is asked over and over again ;)

Even though the xbox has a more efficient gpu, the ps3 has the better looking exclusives. I think this is due to console programming being heavy on the cpu side. That's why I was looking forward to getting fifa 09 on pc only to discovery that it was inferior to the console version. The dev said that majority of pc users don't have a enough cpu power.

But I do believe that the 360 could produce a better looking game than killzone 2. IMO.

Console programming as you put it is only dependant on the cpu if you develop your games that way. FIFA 09 is not inferior to the console version, where did you read that? When the developer made that comment about PC cpus not being powerful enough, he was talking about most pcs having P4s level CPUs. Obviously, most PC gaming enthusiasts have C2Ds and C2Qs or equivalent and upwards which more than matches console CPUs.

[QUOTE="Floppy_Jim"]The WIi having a crap game library and the PS3 having less AAA's than the 360 are myths as well then, according to the spreadsheet. I don't see why only the 360 should be defended.Floppy_Jim

Its not, the pc is being defended also.

True :P I just pointed out those two things because no-one seems to have mentioned them, oddly.

Oh I agree, I have a whole list of PC gaming myths I would love to see gone from system wars, but you cant even get rid of them in a single thread (where people dont read what has been addressed within a thread and then post opinion) let alone the whole board. Then again, that is the nature of this place and its unique ability to pass time for so many us stuck at work :p:

This looks terrible. With this new setting the dark moody melodramatic metaphor infested monologues are gone (or if they still exist they will feel very out of place) also the entire film noir feel of the game seems to have been thrown out the window with the new brighter colors. And wtf is he doing in Brazil? This looks more like Uncharted Rated M edition than Max Payne. This looks like it could be the RE5 of Max Payne, throwing everything we love about it out the window to appeal to a larger audience. RE5 effectively killed any musings of horror from the franchise, and this game seems ready to kill any off any inklings of the film noir theme so prevalent and important in the previous games :(II_Seraphim_II

I thought of uncharted aswell when I saw the screenshots.

Whilst I actually like the grittyness of his new look, looking like he has let himself go, maybe a heavy drinker doesn't really care and hence nothing to lose, I think the change in setting is a huge mistake. Like you said, the film-noir direction really worked with the unfolding gun fights and bullet time.

U can tell a UT3 engine game because its usually generic grey and brown colors and has a terrible story (Gears 1&2, UT3) Edit: the only UT3 game that departs from the pack is mirrors edge because that looks amazing. Valve games have a very distinct look to them.Wii_Gamer_277

OK, so what happens if a developer uses higher resolution texture files that are not generic or brown? How about they use oranges, greens and blues?? Better yet, how about they run the engine at a higher display resolution. Then, we'll have a game that has bright colours, high res textures and clean sharp edges because of the high display resolution. It'll still be the same game engine, right?

Thats because, the textures being used has nothing to do with the game engine lol, how many more times do I have to post this?

Guys you CANNOT tell a game engine based on its texture files. They are in most cases independantly sampled by the developers art department.

If a game has muddy textures, its a design choice not something inherently wrong with a game engine!

Surely even the most ardent fanboy knows this by now?

Whether a game engine appears to have low res textures or is brownish/grey is to with umm...the texture files it is using and NOT the game engine. Developers can use literally any number of png texture files for scenery models etc.

Developers also have a choice what size texture resolution to use. Almost all game 'engines' are scaleable, they can implement various techniques to display various aspects of their engine but actual textures are pretty much down to the developers art department and not the game engine.

So TC, I would not say you can tell a game engine based on textures being blurry or brown in colour. Its just not how it works.
