I'd of done a swap a LONG time ago, if each reciept wasn't tied with the serial # of the Xbox 360. Unless Target employees have been feeding me a load of bull..
im considering doing a swap and then returning the messed up xbox because i think microsoft is doing a horrible job handling such a widespread issue

Yo, just a tip, try unplugging the Hard drive first before you send it in. if it doesn't work, you're still good, call MS. If you got your dates right, and it was indeed manufactured before January 1st, 2006, then you should get a free repair. No cash needed. :D
I turned on my 360 last Friday night and put in the DVD for Dawn of the Dead (1978). My xbox let me know that a new system update was available. I took the DVD out and went to the dashboard and accepted the update. After the update was complete I navigated to the new marketplace blade, queued up two downloads (forza2 demo and some other demo I can't remember). Right after getting back to the Mrkt Blade the screen went wierd and it froze. Reboot, and Booom... 3 red lights.
I've called MS. It'll cost me $139.90 to get it repaired, BUT the shipping is FREE!! (yippy skippy). And I also get a new 1 year warranty on the replacement console, but based on my experience so far I wont get that warranty honored since the new one will probably die shortly after the warranty expires.
I've tried every single combination of unplugging/plugging stuff in. No luck. Power pack has a green light on it, so its not the PSU's fault. This 360 was bought on Dec 22nd 2005 and has a manufacture date of 12-5-2005 (launch window). My warranty is expired, but I have only owned it for 1.5 years. Anyone have any tips on what I can say to MS support to get this fixed for free or am I totally hosed? Why does it feel like I am going to have to "buy" a new 360 every 1.5 years for $139.90?

Same problem here, bud. I've done some research, and I've only found 4 others with my/your problem. You are the fourth. Seems like the most uncommon of the 360 problems. Mine runs perfect, just no picture. Keep messing with the cables, unplugging and replugging, and powering down and powering up, and eventually you'll get a picture....at least, I did......for five minutes. I messed with it for an hour, got it to come on 3 differant times, and each time, after 5 minutes of being on, the picture goes again. According to other posts I've read, it is a faulty video card. By the way, I don't think it has ANYTHING to do with the updates, mine isn't hooked up to the net since it was bought, so no updates ever for it, and this happened anyways. Probably just a quincidence on your part. The only piece of advice I have for anyone with our problem so far is get $140 ready for microsoft. :D Also of note, if your 360 is still under warranty, it'll be free, and if it was manufactured before January 1st, 2006, it will also be a free repair. Mine was manufactured on the 6th on January, 06, so I JUST missed the cut off date. You can find your manufacturing date on the back of the console. Hope some of this helps, let us know how it turns out.No rings of death but no picture either....
Soon after I had the spring update applied to my 360 the picture went funny (kinda psychedelic - smudged colors thing) and when I re-booted it I got no more picture on my TV. I bought a VGA cable today and tried connecting it to my PC monitor and no picture so I figure it's the 360 not my TV.
The green lights are all cool and it recognizes my controler normally but it doesn't show anything on either of the two displays.
Has anybody had this happen? Does it have anything to do with the spring update? Any suggestions as to a cure?
