Finally got my network back.
The skin is not really a problem,I would just paint some shadow in the skin folds, like on the collar bone, the inner arm and leg area, the inner side of the hands, and for a warrior type that fights outdoor make her skin a bit darker, and reduce the glossines a litlle.
She probbly has nice topology since, she`s deforming properly.I mentioned the modding because a deadline for character creation, and I mean character not generic model no.234,there is huge gap between those two,is at top studios like Blur for the HP character 10 days.So with your two year plan on modding calculate how many things you could learn and how many you could create for your portfolio,so try by working on personall projects to.
Regarding the focus,If you know what your personal preferences are, there is nothing wrong wih sometimes being a jack of all trades, dont forget however to become a master of one or two.
The ulitimate focus in gaming industry for character creation is the ability to work with"polygon budget".So you get a limit of 4000 per NPC with close LOD,800 wih distant 10000 for PC,AND 25000 for PC cutscene, thats a example, what is apreciated is the ability to execute that, and execute it fast.
Im boring, but practice makes the master. The Zbrush thing is since we are on a gaming site really mainstream now.

These are HP however. So sculpting is a must, in character modeling. And I was dead serious about painting too.Study people and movements, anatomy, there are some cheap but exellent books, work with references, till wou are able to know exactly where which loop goes, and more important what happens in animation if it`s not there.Stay clean and aplly stif rules to your self on naming conventions.

AWESOME! Thanks, man. Looks like I'll be grabbing Zbrush and reopening some painting and illustrationbooks (have several already).
Here is one off the masters, and a excellent place for learning:

And here are some books, depending on your budget, something to keep a lifetime:
