Circle vs. Square

A friend of somebody I know writes this webcomic. It's strangely entertaining, and really simple. Check it out at circleversussquare.com.

DON'T FORGET TO VOTE FOR THIS COMIC AT THE SPACE THAT SAYS "A VOTE FOR ME IS A VOTE FOR GOOD WEBCOMICS EVERYWHERE." I'M TRYING TO HELP GET THIS GUY INTO THE TOP 100 WEBCOMICS, WHICH SEEMS POSSIBLE CONSIDERING THE RANK WENT UP 40 FROM YESTERDAY TO TODAY. WHY AM IT YPING SO MUCH IN BIG LETTERS? OH WELL, ON TO THE COMIC.

Top Ten Songwriters

I'm taking into account their ability to compose a song and to write good lyrics.

THIS IS 100% OPINION

1. Eddie Vedder

2. Billy Corgan

3. Kurt Cobain

4. Thom Yorke

5. Chris Cornell (Elmis: from your last blog, I realize you think he's a mdeiocre songwriter, but that's your opinion really)

6. Greg Graffin (the best punk songwriter ever, don't argue)

7. Jerry Cantrell (the only non-vocalist on here)

8. Jimi Hendrix

9. Bob Marley

10. Joe Strummer

Don't think too much about this list, it's a lot of opinion.

EDIT: I don't wanna do my homework, so here's a list of my five favorite bands.

All pretty much tied, SG maybe hanging a little behind.

1. Pearl Jam

2. The Smashing Pumpkins

3. Red Hot Chili Peppers (mainly old stuff)

4. Radiohead

5. Soundgarden

It's Even Better Than I Expected

I've played Super Smash Bros. Brawl borderline obsessively for the past couple days, and I'm glad to say, that it was DEFINITELY worth the long wait, three delays, and worth more than my money was. First off, this has to be the sdingle greatest multiplayer game ever made. There's nothing better than setting up a 30 minute brawl with a couple friends and beating the living sh!t out of them, or teaming up with your friends and beating up on a CPU character. Second, this by far has the best single player mode of any of its predecessors. The Subspace Emissary is a delightful story mode, and something many have dreamed of: their favorite characters all coming together for one video game, not just to fight, but to cooperate and go through a story. It ties together every series the characters come from into one big story. In SSE, you can also play co-op with a friend, which I found today is loads of fun. Third, this game has the best character selection of any of the SSB games. It seems that I'm best fighting with Lucario, R.O.B., Ganon, Ike, Pit, Meta Knight, and Link, but even if you suck with a character, it's still fun to try them out, and get good with them. Possibly the best addition to this game, even moreso than SSE, is the Final Smash move. These are unbelievably satisfying to pull off, and easy to kill with. I think Lucario has the best final smash, in which he hovers to the top of the stage, and blasts the foes with a beam that you guide. If you catch a foe in it, there's no escaping, and you'll likely kill them. Link's is well done, and very powerful. Overall, I'd say this is by far the best game in the entire Super Smash Bros. series, and the best game to come out so far this year. I'd also put it in the top five Wii games, which goes

(out of order)

1. Super Mario Galaxy

2, Super Smash Bros. Brawl

3. Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

4. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

5. Zack and Wiki: Quest For Barbaro's Treasure

The best part is, you can have a great time with this game, whether you're a video game addict, or you've never gripped a controller. I'm somwehere in between those (closer to addict), and have to say, you need to try this game, no matter who you are.

I figured since everybody who got this game is blogging about it, I might as well too. I'll give a blog about more than a game tomorrow.

Top 5 Movies of 2007

I've finally gotten to see every great movie from last year, and I'm ready to make a list.

5. Superbad

Ctude? Yes. Tasteless at times? Yes. Does it have the best plot? No. Does it still somehow manage to squeeze out more laughs from you until you can't breathe? Yes! Call it a guilty pleasure if you will, but you can't deny that you laughed at least 50 times during this movie. Every line is unforgettable, and the parts were well cast to fit the personalities of each character. I don't really know how I'm going to describe how disturbing this movie is, but it's still one of the funniest movies to exist.

4. American Gangster

This movie gives the story of famous druglord Frank Lucas, and his amazing and unusual capture. The story of his street-life are eery and in a strange way amazing that what he could do was flawlessly pulled off. Possibly the best part was the background story of his family relationships. This is an awe inspiring, edge of your seat drama, that satisfies you down to the last frame.

3. Ratatouille

Pure genius. Those are the only two words that come close to describing the amazing folks at Pixar. They seem to be filled to the brim with amazing stories and unique ideas. This is perhaps the best film they have EVER made. It's possibly the best animated movie ever as well. Although it's fiction and completely ridiculous, the story is inspiring and never ceases to make you laugh. There are twists at every corner, and you won't find a bad moment inn the movie. Even somebody who isn't a fan of animation would love this movie.

2. Juno

I saw this movie for the second time last night, and I'm pleased to say, it only gets better the more times you see it. The jokes are quick witted and perfectly delivered at all times. The jokes are intelligent and creative, and the drama is amazing. It's a touching comedy which is worth one, two, or even three views before it comes to DVD. It is one of those movies that doesn't wear out no matter how many times you see it.

AND THE BEST MOVIE OF 2007 IS...

1. No Country For Old Men

I've never befor seen a movie so powerful and intense, so strange yet clear. Most importantly, I've never seen an ending as good as this one. The ending leaves room for thought and makes one want to see it again and again just to relive the intensity. I'm now reading this book for school, and it further extends my understanding of the movie. The acting was done flawlessly and The Coen brothers have truly outdone themselves. This is possibly my favorite movie of all time.

WARNING: RANDOM IDEA APPROACHING

I just got the best idea. You know how much I love Soundgarden right? And how Chris Cornell, best rock singer ever is currently a solo artist and doesn't have a decent band with him? I was just watching an Alice in Chains video and got the idea: maybe Chris Cornell should replace William DuVall as the AiC vocalist. This seems crazy, but think about it. Chris Cornell's voice today is no better than Layne Staley's voice would be if he was alive, so why not fire that screecher called DuVall (he's not bad, but just not AiC material) and get a singer who is somewhat like Staley? This will never happen, but it should.

Feed My Eyes...

...can you sew them shut?

You'd better know this. If you need a hint, I will mention the song in this blog, but that's a lot of songs.

I'm anxiously awaiting the day that tickets to see Radiohead will go on sale. If I miss it, I willl most certainly kill...not sure who to falsely announce that I am going to kill for that one :P. Oh well, I'll figure it out. Better yet, you figure it out, I'm sick of thinking.

I have a volleyball tournament tomorrow, in which my team will kick an average 12 bottoms per match, the average number of people on the teams :P. My team is likely to win it, considering we scrimmaged the 1 seed last week and beat them 25-18. We are 6 seed, but we can easily beat the 1, 2, 4, and 5. 3 would probably be the biggest challenge. We played them before and barely lost, 25-22 and 25-21 in the best out of three game.

My guitar playing this weekend seems to kick three times as much bottom as usual. I've easily nailed and surpassed the solos in "Man In the Box" and "Touch Me I'm Sick" today, and replicated "Alive" and "Mayonaise." I busted out the acoustic and played "Fake Plastic Trees" which kicked your bottom and mine. You know that sharp pain you felt in your bottom today at about 1:00 PM U.S. west coast time, that's what it was. In fact, I'll make some videos with the new camera I got last Christmas as soon as I figure out how to use it. It's Japanese or something. Maybe I can mae my Japanese friend figure it out :P (third :p of the day...make it four :P...or five).

Instead of making you guess quotes today, I'll give you some funny ones.

"I don't want anybody shoving their views down my throat unless it's covered in a crunchy candied shell."- Stephen Colbert

"(Standing Mowers) combine the fun of standing, with the popularity of mowing. Stabd up Mowers: get up and mow!"- Jon Stewart

"We want to be free! We want to be free to do what we want to do! We want be free to ride...to ride our machines without being hassled by the man!...and we want to get loaded!"- "In 'n' Out of Grace" by Mudhoney (one of my MH favorites).

"There's an old saying in Tennessee-I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee-that says fool me once...sh-shame on you...fool me...you can't fool me again!"- George W. Bush

"I am a pitbull on the pantleg of oppurtunity."- George W. Bush

"Families is where our nation finds hope! Where wings take dream!"- George W. Bush

"I'm here to announce that this Thursday, ticket counters and airplanes will fly out of Ronald Reagab airport!"- George W. Bush

"If this were a dictatorship it'd be a heckuva lot easier...so long as I'm the dictator."- George W. Bush (I know I've done 5 Bushisms but he says so many stupid things!)

"Nobody calls me a fizzle and gets away with it!...except for that one guy, who called me a fizzle, and then ran away. HE got away with it. But after this time, only half of the people who have ever called me a fizzle will have gotten away with it."- Peter Griffin from Family Guy in "Mr. Saturday Knight."

And for good measure a couple videos.

This is VERY subject to change. The first five are definite, but the rest may change every few months. I may have forgotten something because I made this list fairly quickly.

That wraps up this blog see you later.

5 Most Underrated Bands

Heylin_prince did a 10 most overrated list, and I'm responding with an underrated list.

1. Mudhoney

Listen to "Touch Me I'm Sick' and tell me it doesn't rock.

2. Sonic Youth

Okay, so they're known by every indie music fan and by many else, but theystill don't have a platinum album, only one gold.

3. Jane's Addiction

They have a 2x platinum album, but they still don't get enough attention. They had high charting hits, but the fact is, they are just as talented as one of my favorite bands, RHCP , and came out of the same funk-metal genre. The difference was, Jane's Addiction stayed funk-metal all the way, but RHCP went a little more mainstream. They deserve a 5x platinum album.

4. The Pixies

They got their dues recently, but back when they were rocking it up, they were unheard out of the underground. They're 100% awesome.

5. The Screaming Trees

Elmis once said "Just try and think of who the hell they are." He was right. How many of you know who they are. If you knew, you'd know they rocked. They were the most experimental grunge bands, adding in Pink Floydish influences, and even occasional jungle sounding songs. "Halo Of Ashes" is an awesome song with awesome riffs, and they desrve just as much recognition as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains, or at least one platinum album.

I'd do a top ten, but I gotta go to bed.

Another I would put in the ten would be Creedence Clearwater Revival, and I would need to think about others.

Note: hp- Please don't bring up the fact 3 out of 5 of these are grunge bands. Remember that if I listen to grunge, that's what I'll hear the underrated bands of, just like your top ten would have mostly metal.

A Couple New CDs

Yesterday I checked out a new record store called F.Y.E. Music (For Your Entertainment Music). I expected it to be like most stores, mostly mainstream stuff with the occasional indie and some classic rock stuff, but I was completely wrong. They had an unbelievable amount of indie and lesser known stuff. I picked up "March to Fuzz" by Mudhoney and "Washing Machine" by Sonic Youth, and I'm loving them both. I'm listening to "I Have To Laugh" off the Mudhoney album right now because I'm at home sick, but I'm not sick enough that I won't party. I've got "March To Fuzz" in the CD player right now, and it f*****g rocks. I listened to most of "Washing Machine" yesterday, and it was very good, but it doesn't surpass "Daydream Nation". Song just changed to "Sweet Young Thing", and I need to share the badassery In fact, here are the covers.

MUDHONEY "MARCH TO FUZZ"

It's so obvious why Mudhoney was such a big influence and one of the favorites of famous names like Kurt Cobain. This is a two disc set, the first one being a 22 song greatest hits collection, and the other being a 30-song B-Sides and rarities disc. It rocks extreme socks. I never allow Greatest Hits albums in my top ten, but if I did, I would definitely consider putting this in there. I like it so much, that I think I'll get more individual studio albums. I'll pick up "Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge" as soon as I find a copy (F.Y.E. had this, "Piece of Cake", "Under a Billion Suns", and "Mudhoney", but this was such a good deal I had to take it, 52 songs for $18), and if it matches the quality of this beast, I'll definitely consider it for top ten material. It seems that I'm getting into so many great bands recently that whenever I get into them, a new album gets into the top ten.

I don't want to prematurely score this, but it could get a perfect 10.

SONIC YOUTH "WASHING MACHINE"

This is definitely a high quality album, and one of SY's best. It has some softer, more melodic songs than usually come from SY, and has Kim Gordon singing a lot more, which is great considering her aggressive, rough, and bottom kicking voice. I definitely like this album, but "Daydream Nation" is still the reigning champ of Sonic Youth, and the reigning champ of the '80s. "Washing Machine" is next in line, and one of the top 50 albums of the '90s. I've listened to this over a couple times and give it about a 9.0/10. I'll fully review these albums later.

"March To Fuzz" is still rocking out.

RADIOHEAD'S COMING TO L.A. NEXT JULY AND I GET TO SEE THEM!!! Tickets haven't gone on sale, but I have money, and my parents said I can go. Hopefully it's on a weekend, but even if not, I can still go. In my excitement, here are some badass live Radiohead videos.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=HDS4wOd_o1I (best RH song ever)

http://youtube.com/watch?v=JiRuNTh7Uzo (best song of last year)

http://youtube.com/watch?v=PWsPyLHIEcs (eerily awesome song)

http://youtube.com/watch?v=H6GUYHunE1c (gotta love that riff)

http://youtube.com/watch?v=w2M9aeMBV1w (gotta get something from "Pablo Honey", it's a good song, not really the Radiohead sound)

http://youtube.com/watch?v=6BOw-PkohqY&feature=related (best RH guitar song)

1. OK Computer

2. In Rainbow

3. The Bends

4. Kid A

That's how I order the Radiohead albums. They're all good, but for some reason "Kid A" just doesn't wow me. I know it's unusual, but I find Radiohead to be best when they mix electronic and rock, rather than doing one or the other specifically.

On a different topic than music, I finally got around to pre-ordering Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Image:SSBB Cover.jpg

Nintendo Power gave this a 10/10, as have multiple other gaming mediums. I'm getting impatient for this, so I'll have to pass time playing the awesome Zack and Wiki.

I'll finish up with some guess the liners. For the first time, I have different categories to guess from : music, movies, andTV shows.

MUSIC:

"I wanna feed you so much chocolate until I go blind"

"He acts the hero/we paint a zero on his hand"

"No I'm not your preacher and I'm not your physician/I'm just trying to reach ya/I'm a rebel with a mission"

"Alone, listless, breakfast table in an otherwise empty room"

"I' have a bad bad feeling that my baby don't live here no more/She ain't comin' about is she/that's alright I still got my guitar"

"She wears a *name of song*/Specter on the wind/Waits on me so patiently/I no longer can pretend"

MOVIES (all from last year):

"What's the most you ever lost on a coin toss?"

"Sorry, I'm talking on my cheeseburger phone."

"I assume you all have guns and crack!"

"How was I supposed to know?!? I am a figment of your imagination! You did not know so how could I!"

"See, ya are what ya are in this world. That's either one of two things: Either you're somebody, or you ain't nobody."

"I was elected to lead, not to read...NUMBER 3!"

TV Shows (just name the show, not the episode):

"What kind of question is that? Of course Vietnam was fun!"

"Nobody ever calls me a fizzle and gets away with it!"

"Something was said...not good...DON'T YELL AT HOMER!!!...no that's okay...slow...they called you slow!!!"

"Oh no! I've hurt my wrist very badly! Oh please no one post this on You Tube!"

"It combines the fun of standing, with the popularity of mowing."

(Hint: the last two shows are related very closely)

That's all for today, bye.

My All-Time Favorite Song

Is it by Pearl Jam? No. Is it by The Smashing Pumpkins? No. Is it by The Red Hpt Chili Peppers? No. Jimi Hendrix? No. You'll probably take a while guessing, or just click to see the video below.

White Text Explanation From Line to Line

_______________________________________

The song is, if you didn't see the video "Say Hello To Heaven" by Temple of the Dog, a combination of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. You're either confused, or pleasd by my decision. First off, what an amazing vocal performance! Never before Chris Cornell has anyone had such beautiful range, nor has anyone so flawlessly pulled off both near headbanging screaming (not the screaming you typically hear), then seemingly as a different person, beautifully sing a tribute to a friend. Chris executes every pitch perfectly every time. There's absolutely nothing bad about this performance. Greatest vocal performance ever. Mike McCready and Stone Gossard pull off ****c, bluesy riffs and one bottom kicking solo. Find a guitarist who is more versatile than those two, and you've achieved something. Matt Cameron is famous for laying down great beats, that compliment everything pefectly Jeff always has slick basslines, but bass is rarely heard on a song like this. He still kicks bottom, and the bass is pretty nice if you can hear it. The song is like a beauiful jigsaw puzzle magically coming together. You need the whole album, it's something special.

_____________________________________

Today, I got my Big Muff

It's easily the best pedal I own. My main setup now consists of the Big Muff, Crybaby, Line 6 footswitch ( used for distortion, phaser, tape echo, and delay), and my FAB flanger.

It has a heavy fuzzed tone, amazing to say the least

Top 10 Guitar Solos

After getting into a moderate argument with hp (more of a discussion), I've decided to name my top 10 riffs and solos. I'm afraoid some of you are going to have to prepare to kill me fornot having Stairway on the solos list.

Note: Top 10 riffs will come later today.

All videos attached are live performances, which do not contain the original solo, but an improvised solo. If oyu want to hear the original solo, either watch the music video or buy the song. These videos are just to give you an idea of what it sounds like, and so you can watch the band kick bottom.

SOLOS

10. Man In the Box (Jerry Cantrell)

Why?:Jerry Cantrell is an amazing guitarist, simply put. "Them Bones" hooked me to some of his work, but I say "Man In The Box" is AiC's best, and definitely has the best solo.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=nZ7O4EE0dsg

9. Comfortably Numb (David Gilmour)

Why?: This solo couldn't fit the song better if Gilmour tried. Digitaldreamdoor.com named this the greatest guitar solo ever, and rightfully.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=0wtiNzci1Wc

8.Sweet Child O' Mine (Slash)

Why?: Do I need to explain Slash? Whatever. It kicks bottom, has an amazing tone, and is hailed as one of the greatest solos ever. This is my favorite GNR song, and definitely Slash's best. I sound repetitive, but this melts in perfectly with the song, in a way most fast solos can't (it's slow at the beginning, then fast). Watch the video I put. It's amazing, except Axl sounded a little weird here.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=xZubjXW6wHw

7. Crossroads (Eric Clapton)

Why?: Yes, I'm including live solos. Sorry Elmis, I don't want to put this higher. digitaldreamdoor.com (I mentioned in the Comfortably Numb section) said this is the greatest live solo ever. I'd put one above it, it still seems to kick an uncanny amount of bottom.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=rkm9OiYvmPc

6. I Could Have Lied (John Frusciante)

Why?: As with #9, it's a perfectly fitting solo. The elctric rips through a wall of acoustic peace to bring you a simple, yet powerful solo.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=Sm8uzY99V4k

(the solo here is nothing close to the original)

5. Black Hole Sun (Kim Thayil)

Why?: Kim has a very unique sound when he's shredding. It sounds like less of an organized solo, and more of havoc. When he shreds, it's almost like he's one of those mindless shredders, but there's something that seperates him from them. It's hard to explain, so just listen to this, "Spoonman," and Superunknown" and you'll get it.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=F7CIlL-z8DQ

4. Geek USA (Billy Corgan)

Why?: As I've said many times before, Billy Corgan is my favorite musician, and one of my idols. Not only doeshe write incredible lyrics, he knows how to shred your brain out. Sonic spirals and squeals that anywhere else would sound out of place seme to fit right in here. The down side to the solo, is that if you want to attempt playing it, you may end up with blood on your guitar. Somehow, Billy pulls it off, nails it, and blows me away every time.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=3Vwih-m9Frg

3. The Star Spangled Banner (Jimi Hendrix)

Why?; Well, I mean it's Jimi Hendrix. I don't think I need to explain too much. Do I? Well, I'll do a little explaining. No one will ever be able to replicate this perfectly. It just has that Hendrix sound that comes from another world. And yes, this is the onelive solo I think is better than Crossroads.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=MjHdBDnHEeU&feature=related

(as an added bonus, Purple Haze is at the end for added for added bottom kickery)

2. Alive (Mike McCready)

Why?: 2.5 minutes of pure improv goodness. From the beginning to the end, nothing is missing from this solo, except for the fact it didn't go on for another minute. McCready knows how to take a lick and make it memorable, wich is done multipe times in this solo. One of the greatest solos of all time, and definitely one of the most bottom-kicking.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=rXX3vpUD0kw

1. All Along the Watchtower (Jimi Hendrix)

Why?; Two Hendrix solos in the top three? That's right. This is definitely Hendrix's single most innovative solo. His artistic use of the wah-wah pedal and whammy bar seperate this from any other solo ever. Of course, I'm talking about the second solo, but the other two kick bottom as well. Hendrix didn't shred like people nowadays, but he had his own type of ripping. He was a bluesman who liked distortion, which is evident on this solo. Without this solo, trust me, guitar might not be quite the same.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=BCwCBh0z3Hs

(weather conditions broke his wah-wah pedal at this show, so the solo's a little different, but it still rocks)

Another (Bimonthly)Top Ten Albums List

About every two months (or less) I list my ten favorite albums as it changes. This time, I've got a three way tie up front for my favorite. Which one of them is the best? I'm not sure, they're all too good.

EDIT:

Things that are pissing me off:

1. My new Big Muff distortion pedal arrived today. I excitedly plugged it in, only to find out I had received a defective pedal. I took it to Dietx Bros. (local guitar store) and they send to send it back. F*****g electro-harmonix.

2. I have an essay to write for current events by Tuesday.

3. My algebra teacher is a mental sadist, which means she enjoys watching our minds in pain. She needs to be a College professor.

4. I REALLY want to return and order a new BIg Muffm but Sweetwater is being a dick and is closed before 5 o'clock because they're lazy f*****s.

More to come.
