The Neverending Story

While creating an exciting project plan, I was listening to my Internet Radio Station, when Limahl's great fanfare, Never Ending Story, began to play. I was immediately transported to a dreamworld of magic.

I remember seeing the movie when I was still a child. The film was a little corny, but the soft-focus filtering was amazing. Though I never saw the two sequels, I was reminded today that Jack Black appeared in the third movie.

Hearing Jared Hess recite the odd dialogue in the latest Nacho Libre video blog was hilarious. I watched it shortly after downloading the latest of my other favorite podcasts.

I wonder if his wife and my wife make the same pumpkin cheesecake roll . . . If so it is delectable.

Word of the Day

hortative

HOR-tuh-tiv

adjective : giving exhortation : advisory

Example Sentence:
"My father's hortative comments persuaded me to abandon my dreams of living life on the road, a course that was driving myself to destruction."

Taming Wild Beasts

Saturday I captured the King Kong achievement for being King of the Jungle. A modest feat. After doing so, I realized I was logged into my father's 360 as my father. Thus, I had to go through the levels I had played all over again.

Yesterday, my daughter was being especially fussy and wouldn't go down for her nap. My wife tried many times, but in the end I was able to get her to go to sleep. That was a major achievement.

I have been thinking a lot about how much value games, entertainment, and fun have in relation to life's great achievements. Nobody sees the achievement on my gamer profile for successfully changing a diaper, eating right, or exercising. Nobody knows whether I study, help old ladies across the road, or provide relevant marketing messages to help individuals find the solution they are looking for.

I had hoped to have uploaded a video segment to accompany this blog. Unfortunately, my video capturing solution is not much of a solution, but another problem.

Below is the transcript from an address my wife and I enjoy, for different reasons:

On a recent flight, I sat behind a husband and wife. She obviously loved her husband. As she stroked the back of his neck I could see her wedding ring. She would nestle close to him and rest her head upon his shoulder, seeking his companionship.

In contrast, he seemed totally oblivious to her presence. He was focused solely upon an electronic game player. During the entire flight, his attention was riveted upon that device. Not once did he look at her, speak to her, or acknowledge her yearning for affection.

His inattention made me feel like shouting: "Open your eyes, man! Can't you see? Pay attention! Your wife loves you! She needs you!"

I don't know more about them. I haven't seen them since. Perhaps I was alarmed unduly. And very possibly, if this man knew of my concern for them, he might feel sorry for me in not knowing how to use such an exciting toy.

When the marketers go to bed

. . .the ads are on the airwaves.

Thanks to Youtube, even when the ads are past their prime, we can watch them again. I love it!

The collection of user videos around gamespot have provided fertile ground for game commercials to be relived as well.

Thanks GS!

Crazy Little Thing Called Louvre

I finished my marketing case analysis of French home-builders in 1990. It not only taught me how uniformed global free-market economies are, but also how essential good marketing is for many companies and industries.

This seems to be a good time for France. The Eiffel tower is not on fire, the rioting by young workers seems to have died down, and the great Louvre Museum is featured in a new movie opening around the world.

Speaking of movies, I heard France is also hostessing their annual Festival de Cannes. Cannes is to movies what E3 is to games.

A Million Ways to Be Cruel

How many times will great comic books be turned into bad movies; which get poor game tie-ins?

The Dark Phoenix Saga was probably the single most brilliant storyline to emerge from Chris Claremont's stint with the X-Men. Days of Future Past wasn't too bad either. But wrapping all of it together in a poor version of a movie is insulting.

Just as insulting as a bad game tie in.

The IT Crowd

If you have a bit of geek in you, or you work in the IT field, you owe it to yourself to check it out.

And Now for Something Completely Different. . .

Jared Hess, the man who wrote and directed the cult favorite Napoleon Dynamite, is coming out with another movie: Nacho Libre. Jack Black plays a Friar in a Mexico monestary who must don a mask and become a Luchador to save an orphenage.

I'm not ordinarily a fan of Black's work outside of School of Rock and Heat Vision and Jack, but this looks like a winner. Jared, his wife Jerusha, and School-of-Rock writer Mike White all contributed to the writing of this movie. It has been a while since a PG-rated movie has looked so fun. Jared's sublime directing creates understated, but effective comedies for all ages to enjoy.

I just might break my rule of no in-theater movies and see this one with my wife.

An open Mother's Day card

To my wife: You are the best!

The life we share is the stuff dreams are made of. I appreciate your sensitivity and your support. These years of marriage have been some of the happiest years of my life. Thank you for the beautiful daughter. She not only looks like you, but has so much potential for greatness.

I look forward to many years with both of you beautiful women in my home. May God continue to bless America and our home.
