Try reading up on different artists/periods in art history. Going to galleries is definitely good too.

As for your actual work process I think that, first of all, you need to have an idea or at least a theme as a starting point. Keep skecthbooks with your drawings, ideas and your actual photos and experiment with them. New ideas will come from this. When an idea comes to you don't just translate it and then leave it - build upon it. I think sketchbooks are the key to developing your ideas.

The graphic novel is great. It's a good place to start if you're looking to get into graphic novels and definitely worth your money. It's infinitely better than the film, which I wasn't fan of. Comics are a medium of their own and that graphic novel is one of the best examples showcasing what can be done within the medium that can't be done in other media (such as film, novels etc.). It makes absolutely no sense to turn it into a film.

This is a video game site, honestly.

SirWander

and? Can't people have an interest in both music and video games?

I'd pick music because, to me, it's much more than "entertainment".

People can have more than one hobby at a time, but I didn't mean the contrary. I just expected people on this site to choose video games over music.

ah, sorry. I misunderstood!

I reckon they changed the name to tap into a much larger group of people (i.e. old folks and non-gamer types). "Gameboy" sounds like a child's toy. The DS (and Wii for that matter) appeal to a much larger group of people. So, in short, they did it for money. Which is a shame. The GB, GBC and GBA were awesome.

Honourable mentions: Andy Kauffman, Bill Hicks, Patton Oswalt, Mitch Hedberg, Woody Allen, George Carlin, Sam Kinison, Bob Newhart, Steven Wright, Mike Birbiglia, Todd Barry... probably more that I'm forgetting

I haven't played the GBA port of VI myself but I've got IV and V and they're great. I've got the PSone and SNES versions of VI and if those and my expreience with the GBA ports are anything to go by, I'd say go for the GBA one.

I'm not a fan of it. Despite the huge number of sub-genres, I still find most of it generic, samey and pretty dull. The only bands I listen to are Sunn O))), Isis, Pelican and Boris. But I don't even listen to those guys much.

Still, I understand the appeal of it and I recognise that a lot of artists in the genre are "technically" great musicians.
