RRW Day 3: Classic Action! Plus 4 Game Pickups

How's everyone's Retro Revival Week going? Lots of peeps involved this time around. :D

My stimulus check came today, cashed it and am going to use it on vacation next week. I did stop by Gamestop and picked up 4 nice games for only $27 total (w/ tax).

Doom 3: Limited Collector's Edition, XBOX, New, $9
(Holy...)

Maximo Vs. the Army of Zin, PS2, Awesome shape, $4.49
(neat surrpise)

Gungrave Overdose, PS2, great shape, $3.59
(finally got the sequel to the original Gungrave)

Chaos Legion, PS2, used, $9

I still don't know how I got that Doom new.

Man, if only Xbox 360 had more BC games. I found a bunch of good games cheap that won't work on my 360...

Anyway, on to the RRW stuff:

Street fighter Alpha 3
(PSP version port of arcade game)

Lately, I've been playing Street fighter Alpha 3 Max at work for the PSP, All the old memories from the arcades and home versions are flowing back to me the more I play. :P The PSP version is actually very close to the arcade port - while retaining all the add-ons that have come over the years. it's actually pretty impressive when you think about it. I'll prolly continue to play this for the rest of RRW.

Super Mario All Stars

If you own a SNES, you need to own this game. No ifs, ands or buts about it. that aside, I played Super Mario Bros on it, then moved on to The Lost Levels. i actually got passed my stuck point in the game so now I can get further in the game. YES! FINALLY.

I Might head back later this week and Play SMB3 on it.

Did you know?

-After the release of Super Mario All-Stars in the U.S., Nintendo Power challenged subscribers to reach World 9, take a picture of the screen and mail it in. Those who did so received a special commemorative "World 9 Challenge" iron-on patch.

Shinobi III

I got passed one of my favorite boss battles ever today. Mechagodzilla. It's actually the furthest I've been in the game since I got it. I played this game for a good few hours today. it just swallows you in, especially on the Nomad fro some reason...

Did you know?

-"Shinobi 3 was originally set to be released in 1992. Several gaming magazines (including GamePro, Mean Machines SEGA and Computer & Video Games) gave previews and even reviews of the game, showing pictures of levels, enemies, artwork and special moves which were not seen in the final version at all. Because of being unsatisfied with the result, Sega had put the game back into development to heavily improve it and delayed its release until 1993. When Shinobi 3 was finally released, a lot of game features seen earlier were missing, while new ones had come in place." - wiki

Truxton

OK, first off this is hard to play on the Nomad. real hard. the game is hard to begin with - so i should have played this on the Genny instead. regardless I got by decently, though My skills are spotty, from not playing. Boo me. xD

Did you know?

- This game says made by Sega on the packaging for the Genesis, but the original arcade version was made by.... you guessed it, Taito! ( I swear Taito and Sega have a bond or something...especially with the Taito Legends releases...)

----

Battle Arena Toshinden
(Gameboy)

Not many know this games was made for the original Gameboy. And how does it fare? Well...ur...um...

FANTASTIC. it's a bit different from the PSOne version 9for other then obvious reasons), since it focuses more on knocking your opponent off the stage. It's combo intensive, easy to elarn, takes lots of practice to master, and very engaging for an old Gameboy game. if I had to recommend an 8 bit fighter, this would be on the list without a doubt. i played as Ellis, my fav character in the game, and got through 1 player mode, defeating Gaia. yes, Ellis, his "armor looks good," but that boot you gave to his face looks better.

C ya tomorrow everyone!

RRW: Day 2, NGPC and Sega CD

The rest of my package came today!

I got all these for $13 total.

King Of Fighters R2, NGP

Fatal Fury First Contact , NGP

SNK Gal Fighters, NGP

Metal Slug First Mission, NGP

I've tried only King of Fighters, but after ten minutes I was like "Holy Moley what did I get myself into. This game is beyond good." This Pocket Color keeps wowing me left and right.

First Up for RRW Day 2 was Sonic CD.

Sonic CD

Sonic CD brings back fond memories. I owned the PC version, and it is actually the first Sonic game I ever beat. it's different, a bit trippy, but every time you play, you get something different. there' just too many variations, past, present and future time lines for each level, that you can't get the same experience twice. I own this on Sonic Gems, and last year i got a complete SEGA CD copy, in excellent condition, for dirt cheap. Today i played the original SEGA CD version.

Did you know?
-"After the release of Sonic the Hedgehog, Lead Programmer Yuji Naka had grown dissatisfied with the rigid corporate policies at Sega, so he moved to the United States to work with the Sega Technical Institute. Incidentally, a large number of the original design team of Sonic also left for the U.S., to help instruct the American developers. With half of Sonic Team and two of its most important creators present, the Sega Technical Institute eventually got the job to develop Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Meanwhile in Japan, Sonic CD was handled by a separate development team, headed by Sonic creator Naoto Ohshima. Initially, as revealed in interviews and magazine clippings [1], Sonic CD, and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Mega Drive/Genesis, Master System and Game Gear were supposed to be the same game. However, during development, Sonic CD evolved into a vastly different type of game. Eventually, the gameplay of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 would be favoured for the future games, but this explains why the theme and handling of Sonic CD are different, as well as the use of most of the original Sonic the Hedgehog's sprites for Sonic. The time posts also had sprites similar to Knuckles' Chaotix. However, some vestiges of the original tie-in remain.

Sonic CD was released after Sonic the Hedgehog 2 but before Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Some fans believe the story of Sonic CD either takes place before Sonic the Hedgehog 2 or after Sonic & Knuckles due to the fact that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 takes place where Sonic the Hedgehog 2 left off. However, due to considerable delays and a few easter eggs, it is apparent that Sonic CD was supposed to launch at the same time, if not before, Sonic the Hedgehog 2.' - Wiki

----

The Amazing Spider-Man VS. The Kingpin

First time playing this game for the SEGA CD and I was surprised. I didn't expect the animation cutscenes, the music, and well, I heard it was pretty good for a spider-man game, and it is! You get this huge overworld map, and you track down bad guys eventually leading to Kingpin himself. Spider-man himself is more agile then in other 2D games, which is a instant plus.

Did you know?

-This game has various ending based on what you do. Bosses also change position on the map every time you start a new game.

----

Afterburner II

This game for the Genesis has quickly become one of my favs. every time I play I get farther and farther. playing it on my SEGA nomad, is awesome because it really seems to draw you in on a smaller screen. This is a game that everyone should try. I got pretty far today, the farthest I've been yet. i need to keep a score chart on this game.

Did you know?

-After Burner II was originally planned to have a World War II theme and make it a realistic flight sim but was dropped because Yu Suzuki states that "It would not have fit the arcade scene." A pure dogfighter was not his intention.

-It is the game John Connor is playing before he is chased by the T-1000 in Terminator 2. (Arcade version of AFII)

-Shenmue II features a full playable version of After Burner II. (Arcade version of AFII)

Well, see you tomorrow all!

RRW: Retro Revival Week Begins!

first up on the menu was some NES action!

Dr. Mario

I had the pleasure of recently getting this game in one of my acquisitions. Man, no matter how old this game gets, I still can get pretty darn high in this game. I played for a few hours (with some pausing) on my first play. I still haven't lost that ol' touch :P

Did You Know?

-As popular as this game is, there has only been two real sequels: Dr. Mario 64 and Dr. Mario Online RX. It's been featured in a few collections though.

-The game also exists in Brain Age 2 and can be discovered by touching the bottom slot in the training section, even if it is blank. It is called Virus Buster.

-"The viruses have never been given any formal names, and are known simply as "Red Virus," "Blue Virus," and "Yellow Virus". The Nintendo Comics System (a series of comics produced by Valiant) included an issue called "The Doctor Is In... Over His Head," which depicts a story of Dr. Mario based on the original NES and original Game Boy titles. The comic names the blue virus "Chill," the red "Fever," and the yellow "Weird." These names were later used in Dr. Mario 64."-wiki

----

Donkey Kong Cla$$ics

This game was one of the games I owned when I has my nes. the game I recently got though is a much better copy. I used to prefer DK jr. as a kid, but now, as I'm older, I prefer the original donkey kong. Who would have though? And way on my first try I got through a few cycles. I played it for over an hour, dabbling in donkey kong jr. as well, but doing really poor in Dk jr. I'm rusty for sure in that game. Surprisingly, I did pretty well in the original Donkey Kong even though i haven't played it in years.

Did you know?

-The 2007 motion picture documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters explores the world of competitive ****c arcade gaming and tells the story of Steve Wiebe's quest to beat Billy Mitchell's world high score in Donkey Kong.

----

Kickle Cubicle

This was my first time playing this game. first off, wow, much better puzzler then i expected. if you ever played the Adventures of Lolo series, it's similar to that but a bit different. Definitely one of the better titles for the NES. I played this for a good while this morning. I'll probably continue the quest later this week (or after RRW).

-Both the Japanese and U.S. versions of Kickle Cubicle feature a cameo by Kid Niki: Radical Ninja. To see it, hold down the A button on Controller 2 and then turn on the game. Continue holding A until the title screen appears, and Kid Niki will appear.

-The Japanese version tends to have more enemies present in the various levels.

-In the Japanese and English versions, the player can attempt the different worlds in any order. In the North American release, the world order is fixed.

----

The Adventures of Lolo

The Final NES Game for today was The Adventures of Lolo. First time playing this game too, I was drawn in. it's a pretty deep puzzler, and I'm not surprised it became such a cult cla$$ic. Seriously if you like puzzlers you might want to pick this game up on the Virtual Console (or if you can, the NES cart.)

Did You Know?

-Lolo and Lala, the games' protagonists, have appeared in the Kirby games under the monikers Lololo and Lalala, where they play a more antagonistic role. Both game series are made by HAL Laboratory, Inc.

----

Mega Man X5

I still know this game like the back of my hand. I played the Psone version in this case. The PC versions as the first game I ever played on my first owned PC. I've played this game till end more times then I should admit. :P I played for a while, getting halfway (Maybe I should do a time trial one day?)

Did you Know?

-for the first time ever in a Mega Man game, each character had the ability to duck.

-This was intended to be the last MMX game, to make way for Zero series for GBA. But Capcom had other plans...

----

Omega Boost

Each time I play this game I'm wowed. I'm still wowed. it's one of the best looking PSOne games ever made. The battles still wow me. It's an excellent blend of new school controls with old ways. It's also becoming a roe expensive game to find on the internet from what I heard.

Did you know?

-'Similarities between Omega Boost and Sega's Panzer Dragoon series led to a rumor that former members of Team Andromeda, dissolved in 1998, had joined Polyphony Digital. This rumor turned out to be true as the lead designer and programmer on Omega Boost was Yuji Yasuhara [1], who had worked on Panzer Dragoon Zwei."-Wiki

------

Finally, I spent some time with some Atari Cla$$ics via Atari Anniversary Edition for PC. In sort I dabbled here and there, but spent most of my time with Crystal Castles, Centipede and Millipede. Centipede is a fav of mine since I sued to play the arcade machine near a drive in movie place near where I live. I wonder if it's still there...

I'm playing Sonic The Pocket Adventure right now and it's quickly becoming on of my fav Sonic games ever.

I think I made the most of RRW day 1 and the weekend in geenral :P

My Neo Geo Pocket Color Came! Plus More RRW Stuffs

It came today! It came, it came, it came!

My Neo Geo Pocket Color Silver Platinum edition with Sonic The Hedgehog Pocket Adventure. It's complete and looks like it was opened once and that was it. Like someone reached back to 1999 and pulled it to 2008 :P Man, this is got to be one of my proudest moments in my video game playing/collecting life.

The pocket, which I've never played one before, is awesome. The thumb joystick controls like a dream. you gotta play it to see how darn good it's made. I gotta replace the button battery, but that's no prob. the AA batteries are the originals included in the package!

And Sonic the Pocket Adventure is AWESOME. It's Sonic 1 crossed with Sonic 2 crossed with Sonic advance It's like an betweener between the original Sonic series and Sonic Advance series.

Did You Know?

-The music in Sonic Pocket Adventure is largely taken from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, with one track from Sonic Jam.

-Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure has yet to be re-released as of May 2008. The Neo Geo Pocket is the only way you'll be able to play this game.

-It was also the last game for almost eight years to feature Sonic as the only playable character (apart from multiplayer elements) until Sonic and the Secret Rings was released in 2007.

----

For more Pre RRW action I dabbled back into Taito legends.

Rainbow Islands

This was the sequel to Bubble Bobble. It's different but very very deep. bub and Bob have returned to their human forms but are now caught on an island! out of the fire into the frying pan for these guys. I had fun, but it is harder then Bubble bobble. it'll take practice so I'm gonna go back to this from time to time.

Did you know?

- It is the second of four arcade games in the Bubble Bobble series (followed by Bubble Symphony and Bubble Memories, but itself has two direct sequels: Parasol Stars and Bubble Bobble Part 2).

-"One of the features which sets this game apart from many others (and has no doubt been responsible for the game's popularity) is its 'hidden depths'. While initially appearing to be quite a simple game, Rainbow Islands in fact has a vast number of secrets for the player to discover, including secret levels, secret power-ups and riddles. Because of these elements, completing the game properly requires a large amount of dedication from the player. The scoring system also has secrets, which allow vastly higher scores to be achieved than normal." -Wiki

----

Rastan

I've played the Sega master Version but never the Arcade Version. you play as a warrior hacking and slashing through all these Greek monsters. it featured daylight and nighttime effects that were never so clear in a game before. It's dated now, but it's still fun and I got further in this then the SMS version! xD

Did you Know?

-In the US, this was known as Rastan, but in everywhere else, it was called Rastan Saga

- It spawend two sequels.

-"In 2002, Saffire created a 3-D fighting game published by Titus for the Playstation 2, and Nintendo Gamecube in the U.S. entitled "Barbarian". In 2003 the game was licensed by Taito and was retitled "Warrior Blade: Rastan vs. Barbarian" for its Japanese release. The game was released in Europe later that year. Since this game was not originally created by Taito, and since it originally didn't have Rastan or any other related characters, it actually has no connection to the Rastan universe."- Wiki

----

Return of the Invaders

I really like this game it's an updated take on the original invaders games. it's faster the aliens attack in different formations, and it's loads of fun.

----

Tube It

you've prolly played games like this before, in some sense. Falling panels have to be arranged to connect from a point to a point to erase them. It's not bad, it's just very...uneventful.

----

I also played the Dreamcast today. It kinda gave em a fit today since it didn't want to play Shemue or Army Men Sarge's Heroes. I'll try to clean the disks later. Here's what I played:

Space Channel 5

it's been a while since I've beaten the game. it's still wacky as ever.

Did You Know?

The sequel was released on PS2.

----

NFL 2k1

I don't' care if this is old, ti's still one fun football game! I'm a bit rusty on it though...and football games in general xD

----

Rippin' Riders

It's a semi sequel to the Coll Boarders series on the PSone. It's challenging for me, or maybe I'm just bad. But it's not as intuitive as the SSX series.

----

PenPen Tricelon

this game is nuts. you playas these creatures...called penpens (don't ask me why, and you compete in these triathlons...racing, running swimming...it's actually pretty fun, though simple. Multiplayer is what makes this game better. Watch a vid of this if you can. you'll probably be thinking 'what the heck is this game?!"

I really need to invest some more into my Dreamcast collection though. One Day. This will probably be the last i played the Dreamcast this week unless I can get Shemue to work, I got three of my Dreamcast games still sealed..I'm tempted to open them. xD

----

Finally, I stopped by the Sega Genesis Collection to enjoy some great games.

Sonic the Hedgehog

I dabbled into this game and got a chaos emerald to unlock Zaxxon. STH is still one of my fav games of all time.

Did you know?

="There was also a version of Sonic the Hedgehog that was released for the Sega Master System and the Game Gear, which loosely followed the design of the 16-bit version, although with new stages, some different zones and a level map. Noticeable differences were that the Chaos Emeralds had to be found within certain stages, instead of in the Special Stages (these only allowed the player to get rings and therefore more lives). Bonuses are awarded from the end panel, given some conditions, and there are no rings or badniks to be found in any boss levels (with the exception of the last level, Scrap Brain Zone which actually has no boss). The Sega Master System version was the final title for the console released in the U.S." - Wiki

Zaxxon (arcade)

This is one of those games i always wanted to play, but couldn't. It's fun, but challenging, but also very rewarding. I kept getting further every time I played, Maybe one day I can play Super Zaxxon.

Well, tomorrow starts the real Retro revival week. I can't wait!

Early Retro Revival Week Action

I couldn't wait for Sunday, so i started a jump on some retro games. I installed Tatio Legends for PC yesterday and I was blown away by the collection. it's pretty sweet.

Bubble Bobble

I had to, I just had to, start off with one of my favorite games of all time. I played a few times, a tad rusty but the patterns I used to take out the baddies were flowing back to me.I also watched the designer Fukio Mitsuji's interview. It was a nice treat. he wanted to create something cute, that was simple to use,and invoked people playing with another person. Bubble Bobble is great in 1 player mode, but in 2 player mode, it's an awesome experience.

Did You Know?

- This game was ported to dozens of platforms. Some versions like the PC and NEs port, have their own bonuses for that system.

- There's lots of ways, and I mean lots of ways to make certain bonuses appear.

- There are two cheats built into the Arcade version of Bubble Bobble. Can you find them both?

----

Space Invaders

I played this game next. Man, I still can get my butt handed to me in this game. I give props to peeps who can get real highs scores in this game. I can barely get pass the first round. I watched the original creators Interview on this one too. He got the idea for the game after hearing about Star Wars.

Did You Know?

- Space Invaders was a really popular game. In Japan, specialty arcades opened with nothing but Space Invaders cabinets. It also attributed to a shortage of yen in japan!

-Legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto considers Space Invaders a game that revolutionized the industry, and was never interested in video games before seeing it.

-The 1980 Atari VCS version was the first official licensing of an arcade game and became the first "killer app" by quadrupling the system's sales.

-----

Space Invaders part II

I also played this game, and like the first...well don't expect em to ever save your butt from invaders!

----

Elevator Action

I played this game next, I've only played the NES port before, and this is the first time I've seen the arcade game in action.

Did You Know?

- Most people, if they own a port of this, it's via the NES version.

-An enhanced remake of Elevator Action, titled Elevator Action EX, was released on the Game Boy Color in Japan. The game was released in the United States with a Dexter's Laboratory license, under the title Dexter's Laboratory: Robot Rampage.

----

Zoo Keeper

First time playing this game. You try to contain and avoid animals while surviving the time limit. There's two other types of bonus stages but they are weird. it's neat idea, but I think it's too crammed with these bonus stages.

Did you know?

-If Zeke touches the animals, Zelda will say "Oh No!", Zeke will curse "#$%&*@!!!!", and he will have to try again. ( i thought that was funny the first time I saw it :P)

----

Battle Shark

the last game I played yesterday might have been the best. This game is AWESOME. You play a submarine crew shooting down enemies (both air and sea) in almost light gun-like gameplay. The graphics, sound, experience, I know this game was made in 89, but if i played this game in 89 I'd think I'd melt from the experience.I played it until i beat it.

Did you know?

- In the arcade release you had to use a submarine periscope (you looked through it) on the cabinet to shoot at enemies. Freaking awesome!

I love indulging in retro goodness :P

I Love Fighting Games = My New Pickups

I had a cupon for 30% off GCn and Xbox games. and I couldn't find anything I wanted at either gamespot store. Nothing. Nudda. Zippo.

It's hard to find games for those two systems - I'm pretty selective when it coems to those two, and it seems like when I find a title, it's missing the manual. I don't like buying games disk only and that's a hyper-super rare occurance if i do.

But I did find these games (all complete). :P

Fatal Fury Battle Archives Vol 2, PS2, New $15

King Of Fighters 2006, PS2, Used, great condition, $13.50

King Of Fighters XI, PS2, Used, Like New Shape, $11.69

Sega Genesis Collection, PS2, New, $8.99

Street Figther Alpha 3 Max, PSP, New, $8.99

Astro Boy: Omega Factor, GBA. New $20

Under The Skin, PS2, Used, $10 (This is a game I've never heard of before by capcom. you play as a alien pranking on people! Awesome!)

I think I've scoured enough good gaems otu of Gamestop for a while. xD The stores near me don't have many good titles like they used to...

Oh, and I'm getting my stimulus check soon. :P

"Jawsome" Games

i renewed my Gamestop Edge card today so you know what that means... more games! xD I can't resist looking, and well they actually got some nice games in, including a batch of GCN games.

The damage:

Taito Legends, PC, New, $5
(I just happened to look in the pc section for kicks, and found this baby for only $5. That's awesome to play some great arcade games like Bubble Bobble.)

Neo Geo Battle Coliseum, PS2, New, $15 (A shocker to see this one. I read about it the other day and was like "it be cool to play this game. And "poof" here it is. xD)

Capcom vs. SNK 2, GCN, Used, Complete, Great Condition, $11.69 (A great game that i loved but had to sell years back. It's so good to have and play this game again. I'm so thankful to have found it.)

Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, GCN, Complete, Great Condition, $13.49 (I've been waiting for a price drop on this game for AGES, and they finally reduced the price (it was $40 last month.)

Amazing Island, GCN, Complete, Great Condition, $6.29 (a game I've heard about, but never seen in person.)

X-Men Legends 2, GCN, Complete, Great Condition, $7.19

Mystic Heroes, GCN, Complete, Great Condition, $7.19
(same situation as Amazing Island.)

Art Of Fighting Anthology, PS2, Used, Like-new shape, $11.69

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory Limited Edition, PS2, Used, Great Condition, $9 (Pretty neat find!)

Snk Arcade cla$$ics VOL. 1, New, PS2, $20

I was actually pretty surprised to find the GCN games that I did, as for a long time now, no new GCN games have really showed up at that store. I was also able to knock off quite a few games off the wanted list. I'm really addicted to SNK stuff (and arcade stuff) lately. Maybe, I miss the old arcades I used to go to.

Also, I wrote 3 little reviews for games. Check them out if you get the chance.

...And Beyond!

After hitting 900 games, it's time to look for the future. I gotta plan for space, and am gonna try to focus my efforts on things I really want to get (while keeping a mental list of what I have xD).

So, going to the flea market today I was able to mark off a few of the wanted list (marked with a *) and get some shelving for the room.

Alright, so let's bring on the damage:

Leading the list are some games I've looked for a long while.

Tomba!, PSOne, Disk Only, $7*

Kirby 64, N64, Cart Only, $22*

Mario Paint w/ Snes Mouse, $15*

While a bit on the high end, it's 3 games I really wanted, so sometimes when your eally want something and have looked everywhere to find, you gotta pay the piper. Usually, I never pay above a buck or so for a disk only game, but I wanted toomba that freaking bad. I usually tend to stray away from disk only games. Kirby is the second time i've paid $22 for just a cart. Paper Mario was the first (about 2 years ago or so). The next one down is Super Mario All-Stars for Snes, which I paid $20 for. After that cart only games i've paid for, are much, much lower.

So with that aside, I got these too.

(all cart only)

Yo! Noid, NES

Kickle Cubicle, NES

Spider-Man Return Of The Sinister Six, NES*

All 3 for $5 total.

-----

Commando, NES

The Legend of Kage, NES

Dr. Mario, NES*

Tecmo Bow, NES*

All for $5 Total

-----

Mortal Kombat, SNES

Skate Or Die, NES

Caveman Games, NES

Daffy Duck The Marvin Missions, SNES

The ren and Stimpy Show: Veediots, SNES

All for $10 total

-----

I also got a nice big bookshelf made especially for games, $14

A user uplaoded a nice vid of the into to Tomba!

[video=dnIww2Cr5b4KuT7Z]
