Well it seems we've reached that time again, that's right time for another protest. In case you haven't been checking the gaming news lately one angry man, Jack Thompson has taken it on himself to decide that to-be-released game Bully is too violent for children to play and so has rounded up an angry party and gone on a quest to get these games taken off shelves.
There is nothing that bothers me more than when people who don't know what they talk about try to get something banned and do not listn to any type of reason. This is part of something we're all familiar with, the constant war of the worried and ignorant against video gaming, not only have I seen things like these with in the video gaming world many times before but it seems there will always be somebody trying to get something banned no matter what it is. For example there are those so desperate to get the Harry Potter books banned that they don't even have time to read them and there are even those who consider Pokemon (cartoons and games) to be Satanic.
I find these situations so annoying and for some reason it is the same every time, now I am not saying that all parents have no knowledge of video gaming, I think we can find at least one example of an involved Mum gamer right here on Gamespot (Princess Zelda). But these protestors always seem to be the same, in this situation alone we can see poor old Jack has:
1. Started his fight against a game which has not even been released and he has not been able to get a copy of, how can he really see this game or even see the effects on people?
2. Most likely like so many before him based all his arguments on stereotypes or small things he's picked up from the internet.
3. Continually complained about effects on kids despite ERSB rating this game being Teen.
4. Even ignored what the U.S goverment has said about this game when he went to court with the developers.
5. Tried to make choices for other parents that are not his to make.
Well i'm sure that Bully will hit the shelves, the protests will fizzle out and be forgotten, there will still be a small group of people eternally opposed to the game, but some time another angry group of non-gamers will rise up so this can start all over again.
If you want to hear another blog on this issue see "Tired of being BULLIED!" on Princesszelda's profile. Still at least there is only 11 days till the U.K launch of The Dark Crusade and I guess thts something to look forward to.
P.S thank you for sitting through my rant. -Gamer_152
