@keldarironfist The only reason Steam has had any success is because I can get the entire GTA franchise of games for $10 during their big sales. I've never bought a game at full price on Steam, and never will given the restrictions it has. But because of the sales and deep discounts they can afford to have such restrictions without invoking the ire of the gamers. Microsoft can't play this game. The console market is a completely different beast.
@TitanPolaris @Granpa0 @brucemoto This has nothing to do with piracy. At all. This just reeks of pure, old-fashioned, greed on the part of Microsoft. Notice that it's Microsoft imposing this "tax". They are not "leaving it up to the publishers", and we've been given no indications that the publishers will see any of this money (one can assume that they may have some kind of deal made where they do, but at this point it's just an assumption). It's a poorly thought out decision by Microsoft and like I said, one that will cost them dearly. Remember how EA was voted the most hated company in the industry this year? Take a wild guess who is going to take that trophy next year?
@brucemoto You're being very narrow minded. This decision hurts everyone, from the gamers, to the publishers, to the developers, and ultimately it will hurt Microsoft because they will lose customers. Though the developers don't get direct payment from used games, used games can be a gateway to purchasing new games. The reason I bought Uncharted 2 and 3 new, when the preorder was available, was because I first picked up a used copy of Uncharted 1 and was hooked on the franchise. Naughty Dog won me over as a customer as a direct result of the used games market. The solution to this non-problem was publishers instituting a buy-back program, the way car dealerships do. This "solution" by Microsoft is not a solution at all, it is a terrible decision that will come back to bite them in the rear.
This article nails it. Whatever good vibrations Microsoft wanted to convey about the Xbox One via the reveal, were quickly squashed by this horrible decision to implement this "tax". I went from being somewhat interested in the Xbox One to, "no way in hell are they getting my money".
