They are still losing money.

A) they don't sell the systems for 400$ to the retailers

B) Shipment cost are not included in the manufacturing cost

C) Not all system cost the same.

They could be making up the money in Europe/Australia though because they systems are overpriced over here.

Krigon

Point is, they are not losing a straight 250$ per unit made/sold anymore. Big big BIG plus as it contributed to a $2 billion dollar loss for Sony in the last year or so. Sony never really plans to make money off their consoles, it's the games. It's the same business model they used for PS2 and was widely successfull. (as you can see the PS2 still outsells the XBOX360, sadly, due to it's low price and 3000 game count) Everyone thought the PS3 would just bankrupt Sony and flop or get discontinued. But it's the PS2 all over again. And in a few years this puppy will be the best console out there due to it's intense hardware which will definately last through multiple generations of new age gaming, and by then all the developers would have learned to properly code for the cell processor. I'm definately buying one of these by summer time. Hopefully there will be another price drop by then :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3#Sales_and_production_costs

"Since the system's launch, production costs have been reduced significantly as a result of phasing out the EE chip[65] and falling hardware costs.[66][67] The cost of manufacturing Cell microprocessors has fallen dramatically as a result of moving to the 65nm production process[68][67] and Blu-raydiodes being cheaper to manufacture.[66][69] As of January2008, each unit costs around $400 to manufacture."

They aren't losing $250 per unit any more! They aren't making much either lol but still it's good news. Yay for Sony! Maybe they'll be more in liberty to drop the price of it some more by the end of the year when I plan to buy one of these :)

PSP's best titles are all PSP exclusives: Syphon Filter series (those particular sequels anyway, not talking about PS1), Daxter, Jeanne D'Arc (AWSOME GAME), Killzone: Liberation, Ratchet, Crush, the upcoming God of War and it will for sure be awesome, SOCOM PSP series and others I cant think of right now. All those games are PSP exclusives and are awesome, even the ones that have other series on other consoles these particular sequels were made strictly for the PSP and were great! I think the PSP harvests some good content and doesn't need to resort to just porting everything.

God of War is a PS2 game. (for example) The PSP has a faster processor than a PS2 (333mhz vs. 266mhz) so theres no reason to really not have PS2 games on a PSP. Plus the benefit the PSP gets in additionis the textures have to be dulled down a bit to fit on the smaller 1.8GB UMD disc, resulting in higher FPS which leaves more room to improve on other graphical elements in the game (i.e lighting, shadows, physics)

I belive it was the games. In an interview i saw on the new GoW game with the developers they said that they begged sony for them to unlock it because with 333mhz a lot can be done to make games look good. Sony was reluctant but finaly gave in. In that same vid they showed a before and after of what it looked like. You could see many differences. So its there, but for some reason Sony doesnt like using it for whatever odd reason.

And as far as i know no other game uses it. Its a shame too becuase all that extra power really makes a difference.

It's cuz itll eat more battery power and then complaints of low battery life will swarm in. We'll have to see in March.

Oh so the older games will still be executed using only 222mhz? Was this a hardware lock or a software lock? (as in the games themselves locked the CPU use to 222) Cuz theres some games I use to have that had bad FPS that I'd like to try again lol. And do any of the new release games use it? Syphon Filter: LS, Manhunt 2 etc.

So what exactly happened with the processor speed. Did it get unlocked? Or is it only on the slims since I read they have a more efficient battery? (and if so will this result in fancier looking games?)

This is part of the reason why so many analysts (Google it if you want) predict Sony's PS3 to have a market share of 60% by 2011. The whole PS3 shelf life is expected to be 7 years. Like you see that Sony has just above 60% of the market share with it's PS2 at the moment, it's doing better now than ever. That's Sony's plan, lose a ton of money the first years and bounce back later. Becaues the PS3 is a trully awesome machine, it just doesn't have that many good games for it at the moment. But the fact that you don't have to pay money to Sony like you do to money grubbing Microsoft (like they don't have enough already) is why PS3 will in the end have more users. That and it's a much more powerful machine that has already dropped by 100$ in a year and most likely will again. For the time being the XBOX 360 is a great buy, great games, lower cost. But later on PS3 will take the throne due to it's intense hardware that will be able to keep upwith next-genstandardsfor years to come.
