The pistol is the traditional weapon of the Hollywood star. One schmuck with a .45 pistol (which never needs to be reloaded) runs into a building, takes out 50+ guys with kevlar and smgs/assault rifles. He never stops to pick up one of the clearly superior weapons that his enemies are carrying. No sir. He keeps the pistol. And oh yeah - if he shoots a barrle/car/helicopter/etc. it explodes because everyone knows that you can put HE rounds in your Glock. :|

Probably for the discretion factor? Maybe because he's undercover most of the time... SMGs kinda stick out. Perhaps also for the mobility factor. SMGs are concealable, especially H&Ks new MP7. Discretion or not, when Mr. Bauer is in the thick of it, the ideal CQC weapon would be a accurate SMG with a good rate of fire. Pistols do not cut it.
