Until you get into the competitive online battles.

Exactly. It takes a lot of time (and skill) to train a good team and beat others online. Especially if they're a hacker.:POk. I guess you could say choosing a team and EV training requires a little bit of skill, but honestly its more logic and creating a balanced party than skill...
Nope, Team building skills can only get you so far. From the 3'rd generation onwards, there's simply too many threats to prepare your team for, and you can't cover all of your bases. You set a goal, say, sweep with X. Then you try to cover the more glaring threaths you have to overcome to reach that goal.
From this point on, it's exactly like was said in a Webcomic called Erfword: "But, y'know... he's (the opponent) doing the same to you. And you can't be strong everywhere. So you fall back when he's stronger. But you roll with it. Yes, you plan. Okay? But the enemy won't follow your plan. So the trick is to be fluid, hit him on the fly, define his choices.. watch for opportunity, like when he boops up. You have to know more than he does about what's going on."
The real challenge is to use whatever you've have and dismantle your opponent team, even when you can't directly counter it. You have to play around the threats, know the metagame and outsmart him.
