Color me unsurprised. There wasn't nearly enough information on this series for people to believe a January air date was going to happen. This could also be a reaction to the negative feedback fans have expressed over hiding the latest Star Trek series behind a paywall. Pushing the series back may allow CBS to explore other airing options, like a traditional Summer slot on the regular network, so the news is not all bad.
Really like the looks of what I'm seeing here. And the sound design is outstanding. It's a big step up from the original game, which was pretty good in its own right.
@SirNormanislost: They DID overhaul the ground combat in some ways. Unfortunately, the gameplay remains hit and miss compared with the space combat engine. Literally. Even now, clicking on a power does not always get it to engage. Sometimes you have to click it two or three times, and even then you have to pray. Occasionally this also happens in space combat, but since that aspect of the game isn't as fast-paced as ground combat, it's not nearly as frustrating.
@skemaal: I thought they were aiming for Christmas 2017. That would make sense if this footage is truly pre-alpha material. No way they would make Spring of next year if this is all they have to show us. Even making next Christmas might be a stretch.
@nibbin1191: The game is still in pre-alpha, so you can't rightly judge the game by what we've seen here. However, the fact that the game is, well, still in pre-alpha after all this time is cause for concern. I guess EA felt they had to show something now in order to assure everyone that development is ongoing. I, for one, haven't forgotten the high-profile departures of several people involved in the early stages of this project. It makes me wonder.
"If you're not watching this on a 4K screen, find one and come back?" Dude, that tech is super high-end. How many of us do you expect to be rich enough to afford something like that? Concentrate on making a compelling experience, and few people will care how cutting-edge the graphics are. You'll sell more copies.
From my own experience with the PC version of the game, Star Trek Online is mainly about the space combat. True, it has ground combat as well, but I've never found the ground gameplay tight enough to be compelling. Maybe it will be different on console, but odds are it won't be.
That's subject to opinion, of course. What's not subject to opinion is the level of grindiness you have to go through to get good stuff without whipping out the credit card. There's fun to be had in STO, but lately it seems that "fun" is not the point of the game so much as it is to give the developers insane amounts of money just to get that one ship (or outfit) you've always wanted. People have come to equate STO to "space barbie" (or more accurately "space Pokemon"). It's hard to argue with them, sadly.
@d_: It's not so much that they over-rely on special effects, it's that they under-rely on the things that actually make good movies - like character development. That's the biggest difference between Marvel and D.C. in the movies right now. Marvel has characters we care about, so we can relate to them as heroes no matter how ridiculous their outfits are.
