I don't want to disappoint the adoring fans of my blog. I found this stashed in my hardrive. Its an old report I made for English, its not a bad read, and good for ideas if you happen to be doing a report. Don't just copy this over with your name, it is violation of copyright and will cause karma to get you. Karma can be nasty!

The War of the Worlds
Hysteria & Radio
Between 8:15 P.M. and 9:30 P.M. October 30, 1938 thousands of listeners tuned in to a radio broadcast that swept the nation with a wave of hysteria and panic. The broadcast consisted of a radio representation of H. G. Wells’s sci-fi fantasy, “The War of the Worlds.” Thousands of listeners were led to believe that an interplanetary conflict between Earth and Mars had rampantly spread death and destruction in the greater portions of New Jersey and New York. The story was adapted by Orson Welles and started with a brief statement that this was a drama, followed by an except from the first portion of the book. Many people who believed this story true had to have not heard this portion of the broadcast, nor three others during the broadcast telling of it‘s fictional nature, nor seen newspaper and other ads publicizing the story; this or the people did not listen to them.
The beginning of the actual radio play started with a simulated weather broadcast, followed by the beginning of a dance program. This dance program was broken into by a special “news report.” It appears that the breaking into the play from “normal-style” programming may have been a reason for the mass of people who believed that this was real. It has been questioned by myself that people may have believed the story was real because of the “news break-in” beginning. Orson Welles actually expressed his feeling that the play may have been not realistic enough, this was of course before the broadcast had happened. At least a score of adults were fooled enough by the play to have to be treated for shock and hysteria at local hospitals, if it had been more convincing I could hardly imagine the harm that could have been done.
A popular suggestion to account for the people believing in the broadcast is called the “Nelson Eddy Tune Out” myth, in this suggestion people who listened to the popular Chase and Sanborn Hour radio broadcast tuned out from the program when the first musical interlude played. In this way many listeners skipped over the introduction and believed this was a true news story. By the time an additional warning was dispersed these listeners were too far drawn into the story to listen to/take care about/actually hear the warning. While the “Nelson Eddy Tune Out” myth is an interesting story and a way to explain the panic The War of the Worlds caused it is not an all assuming theory. While around 18% of The War of the Worlds’ listeners had at some point heard part of the Chase and Sanborn hour, the “tune out” happened at the second musical interlude. While this does not matter in figures it does show inconsistency amongst the “facts”. This still means that 88% of The War of the Worlds listeners did not hear any of the Chase and Sanborn hour. Also the approximately 500,000 people changing channels is quite small compared to the 35,000,000 listeners to the Chase and Sanborn hour.
More than a dozen families in a single block of street ran from their homes packed ready for the police to tell them wear to evacuate to, they had covered their mouths and noses with wet handkerchiefs to escape from the deadly gas raids of Mars. People held emergency church services to find redemption from the “end of the world”. Bus schedules were changed to go around what was called an accident blocking that part of the country. People volunteered to provide their services as first-aid workers to help with injuries and to provide themselves as militia to fight the invaders. The worst spreading of the terror was when people who thought it was a drama were called by friends and told that general orders had been issued to all in a wide area to evacuate, this spread the terror of the invasion to others otherwise unaffected. In addition people in panic were sure that they had heard the president and other officials come on to the air to order the mass evacuation of the area, none of the reported officials were in the play.
My grandmother was in New Jersey at the time and though her and her parents did not listen to the broadcast, she heard about the broadcast afterward. People, according to her, were still in the belief that it was true despite the assurance of police and the government, also the area they were in had reportedly been destroyed. The terror of the Martians spread across New England, into the South, into the West, and even into Canada. One Canadian woman was found at home by her husband, a bottle of poison in her hand screaming she would rather die like that. Her husband calmed her, then listened to the broadcast and called to find out what it was about. The only loss of money reported in all of the confusion was by a man who “bought a ticket to go away” only to find he hadn’t the money to buy work shoes, both Mercury and Cantril gave him size 9B work shoes approximately $3.25 a pair. The broadcast has been replayed and redone several times, the most notable in Venezuela where a mob burned down the station and killed people inside, while the army went to fight the Martians.
I have personally downloaded part of The War of the Worlds broadcast online and listened to it. I have only gotten to download part of it (about 26 min) because of my connection’s slow speed and its frequent disconnections. The website has many broadcasts done by Mercury, not just The War of the Worlds. From what I have heard the broadcast is very realistic, and a person who missed the first warnings may have lost his calm to the point of not being able to hear the additional warnings. From the dance music, to the governmental reports, to the realistic death of Carl Philips the drama is too real for the comfort of listeners and too close to the war scare that was just then coming to a close. I will continue to feed my interest in this story which has been fired by this report. I will download all of the broadcast, I will find the old movies (one representing the story, the other the terror and the story), and I will watch the new movie I have heard will be created on this landmark of entertainment (I have heard it will be available in summer of 2005).
