International Blog

First of all, today is your last chance to vote in the Class of 2005 TV.com superlatives. I'd like to thank everyone who's voted. :) Tomorrow I'll release the results. Today I'm doing a round-up of things I'm interested in other countries. It's... The International Blog! Finland: Apparently, Conan O'Brien looks just like Finnish President Tarja Halonen. And she's a woman. Conan sometimes makes fun of this on his show, and he's become extremely popular in Finland. He recently ran a mock re-election ad for Tarja who, ironically, has been called the "anti-American candidate." Australia: CNNNN is an Australian series that parodies American news networks like CNN and Fox News. Here's an example of their stories: "CNNNN discovers Americans support war on Kyrgyzstan, 'wherever it may be." It's sort of like the Daily Show. Check out their website, and while you're at it take a look at The Onion. Canada: Oh Canada. I stumbled upon a website of Canadian jokes, that are relatively funny. Click over to "computers" and read the one about the Saskatchewan virus. That's it for today. Don't forget to stop by tomorrow for the 2005 Class of TV.com Superlatives!

Dr. Phil

(Note: Don't forget to vote in the TV.com Class of 2005 Superlatives. Polls close tommorow, Thursday, November 17, at midnight) I have just a little time before Lost to make my daily blog entry. I've put it off for a while because I've had serious blogger's block. So I'll just talk a little while about my conflicted relationship with Dr. Phil. When the Dr. Phil bonanza began a couple of years ago, I couldn't stand him. He was going around trying to impose his views on everybody, and the overexposure started to get to me. Besides the fact that I've had a pretty bad relationship with psychologists in the past. So I never watched the Dr. Phil show. In fact, I boycotted it. Whenever it came on in this house, I left the room. But when I was sick a couple of weeks ago, I was too tired to leave the room. I just lied on the couch saying "no... please no..." in a very faint voice. Needless to say, my cries went unheard. So I watched the Dr. Phil show. It was one about a wife who was spending too much of her husband's money. About halfway through it occured to me: "Dr. Phil is really smart!" It turns out that I totally agreed with his excellent advice for this couple. Not only that, but he was a little bit funny. So from then on my opposition to the Dr. Phil show steadily decreased. I started to stay in the room whenever it came on; It's actually become a daily fix for me. It's only today that I realized, "I really like the Dr. Phil show. Imagine that..." :) So that's my conflicted relationship with Dr. Phil. What are your feelings about Dr. Phil? We have only one day of voting left, and turnout has increased a lot over the past few days. :) If you haven't voted already, please get your votes in. The results will come out on Friday, and everyone should have their award by Monday. I think a couple of people will get two. ;) Hope you guys had a great day today. Sorry I haven't been around, I've been at my grandma's house. Stay safe, and see you tomorrow.

All I want for Christmas is a dictatorship

(Note: Don't forget to vote in the TV.com Class of 2005 Superlatives. Polls close Thursday, November 17) The Mega Millions Jackpot is up to $310 million. My grandma (Mema), my aunt Tricia, and my mom all chipped in 2 dollars to buy six tickets, and if one of them wins they'll all split the money evenly. The thing about my family and lottery tickets is that every time we buy them we become 100% positive we're going to win. I don't know why, but we do. It's always a bit disappointing when we don't. Do you ever buy lottery tickets? I'd like to talk about the only thing I've asked for for Christmas: Civilization IV. I am a huge civ fan and Civilization III is my favorite game of all time. There is no other game I've played before that so totally immerses you in the experience. I've spent 16 hours straight playing Civ III (:o) because it's just so hard to turn away from! In case you don't know what it is, "Civilization" is a game series that started in the early 90s, and in the game you control a country (civilization) and handle all of it's affairs: the military, the economy, the diplomacy, the government. You can even make yourself dictator. It's a great power trip. :) Anyways, I'm hoping to get the newest edition, Civ 4, which apparently let's you found religions, take over cities with culture alone, and trade music, for Christmas. And if I do, I won't be back here for another month or so. Have you ever heard of Civilization? What's your favorite video game? My profile has started to feel chaotic. The blog doesn't flow anymore, there are all sorts of different colors, There's the new banner (which, by the way isn't permanent. It's just going to stay there until I feel a bit better about my loss)... it just doesn't feel right anymore. I guess that's the obsessive compulsive (The OC) part of me talking. I'm going to start putting serious effort into making my blogs aesthetically pleasing, instead of this mixed up mess. Even though the polls are not closed, I've begun tallying votes for the superlatives and I'm pretty positive I know who's going to win. :) I'm happy with the results except two people are going to win twice, which I didn't want to happen. You know what I just noticed? That button over there that says "My Mod Queue." I was like "What's that?" So I opened it in a new tab and low and behold, people editors have powers now. I didn't think they did. So there are quite a few submissions in there that have sat un-moderated for some time. I'm not going to do the blue box until I get some submissions approved. Have a great day, guys. :)

The world looks better when viewed through tabs...

(Note: Don't forget to vote in the TV.com Class of 2005 Superlatives. Polls close Thursday, November 17) I'm leaving for Florida in about an hour and a half. My Aunt, My Grandmother and I are going down to Lake City to pick up one of my other aunts. So I should be back at about six or so, ready to blop away. :) Today I'm going to talk about web browsers. This is something I know a decent amount about, since I have four. Let's start out with the most basic: Internet Explorer: The classic. This browser is the most commonly used, and it most likely came with your computer. If it didn't come with your computer, you're one of these people and don't need it anyway. :) IE is like an antique in the browser world. It has no tabbed browsing features, it makes it difficult to get your RSS feeds, and it's not very secure. But it's reasonably fast and a bit more reliable than the other browsers. If ever I come across a site that's having a problem (Or TV.com is going nuts) I'll start using IE and everything will be fine. TV.com in particular works much better in IE. It runs faster and with less trouble. However, the inconvenience of IE (No tabs) keeps me away. Firefox: The golden boy. Firefox is full of fun bells and whistles. Tabs, extensions, the bookmarks toolbar (Which makes it easier to check out your RSS feeds) and adblock just to name a few. Firefox is most definitely the easiest and most functional browser to use, but it's not very fast. And it messes up more often than any other browser. If you go to a site with too many pictures it will go plum loco. Bottom line: if you haven't tried Firefox, try it. It's the browser I'm using right now. :) Opera: The fast browser. Opera blitzes around the internet like Superman when he flew around the world and brought Lois Lane back to life. It has tabs, but no extensions. And there are a few annoyances in Opera that begin to wear you down. For instance: There is now "Open Bookmark in New Tab" button, so you always have to open the new tab, then open the bookmark. It's a bit of a nuisance. Also, you have to refresh most pages manually. Opera saves websites you go to so you won't have to load them again when you go back, but if the site has changed you're going to have to refresh it manually. This is especially bothersome in the TV.com forums. Bottom line: If you prefer speed to functionality, go to Opera. AOL Explorer: For all intents and purposes, this is IE. In fact, the websites you look at in AOL Explorer will actually show up in your IE history folder and vice versa. However, AOL Explorer is a bit faster and has tabbed browsing. You can't add new search engines though, so the only search toolbar you get is the AOL one. Bottom Line: Faster than IE, but a bit less functional. Get it if you want to have tabs without giving up the majority of your IE features. Whew... I've been meaning to do that for a long time and it's finally done. Good. :) [QUOTE="Stats"]

Sweet Sweet Sleep

(Note: Don't forget to vote in the TV.com Class of 2005 Superlatives. Polls close Thursday, November 17) At about 6 o'clock this morning I couldn't take it anymore, so I went to sleep. I slept surprisingly well and for 8 hours. :) Now I'm rested, and feeling much better. I've tried to make my banner visible to people with firewalls. Thanks to Sesho2022 for informing me that if you have "banner" in your banner name it will be invisible. It took her two tries to get this through my attention deficiant mind. But not only did I have "banner" in the title, I had AD (Arrested Development) banner as the title. So any browsers stopping by would see it as "Ad banner." Ironically, it's the type of mixup that would usually occur in the show. Votes for the superlatives are coming in a bit more rapidly than they were before, and a consensus is beginning to form. I'd like to thank all the people who've voted, especially the people who I didn't know before. My friends list is now up to 52. :o And I can honestly say that I'm actively friends with 3/4ths of them. This site has a better community than any other site I've been a part of before, including Myspace. SNL is bad again. :( Last night's was horrible. I had hopes after the Lance Armstrong episode that things would get better, but no such luck. The 00's are the new 80's as far as SNL goes. Well, that's all for today. Don't forget to vote. :)

Self-Inflicted Sleep Deprivation

(Note: Don't forget to vote in the TV.com Class of 2005 Superlatives. Polls close Thursday, November 17) Well, I guess my ear infection isn't totally gone. Yesterday, after not having had much sleep, I tried to take a 4 hour nap halfway through the day. I couldn't sleep. I was hot, I was twisting and turning, I was waking up every ten minutes or so... it was exactly what happened when I had my horrible ear infection. Not to mention the fact that my ears started hurting again. :( It's a horrible experience... Has this ever happened to you? You go to sleep but you can't stay asleep, so you wake up, stay awake for a minute or so and drift back off to sleep. This is what happenes to me. I get caught in this limbo where I'm not asleep but I'm not awake. It takes so much strength to pull myself out of that horrible cycle that I'm afraid to sleep. So I've kept myself awake for about 48 hours. Hopefully the new, super duper antibiotic I've been put on can deal the deathblow to this infection so I can move on with my life and sleep. Oh sweet blissful sleep, how I miss thee. I'm sorry if much of this is incoherent blabber, but I'm just so tired! And I don't think I can fight the sleep much longer... must try... can't go... into... limbo state... can't sleep... mmmmm... Elmo.

The Day Finally Came

(Note: Don't forget to vote in the TV.com Class of 2005 Superlatives. Polls close Thursday, November 17) Yesterday, Fox cut it's order of Arrested Development down to thirteen episodes, which many (including me) consider tantamount to cancelation. We all knew this day would come, but somehow we held out hope that the ratings would improve somehow and that the show would be with us for many years. Today the inevitable happened and this fear that's hid in our minds has come to fruition. I find myself sad and angry, but I think I'll be alright after a time. This is the second time this (a painful cancelation) has happened to me this year. The first was with Enterprise. Everyone knew it was going to happen, but we were all so shocked when it actually did. And then groups all over the world rallied, raised money, picketed, sent letters, and all sorts of things to try and save it but to no avail. It all just gave me this sense of false hope that maybe, just maybe some other network would pick it up. Or that it could be saved somehow. But I've learned that that almost never happens. When it's done, it's done. For me, Enterprise was equivalent to a divorce. First comes denial ("The Paramount execs aren't going to let this happen"), then anger ("How could they ruin a franchise like this?"), then false hope ("Maybe another network will pick it up"), and finally acceptance ("Star Trek will be back in ten years or so and I will spend that time preparing for the biggest Mexican-themed Trek party ever"). And the divorce scars you for life. You half expect every relationship/good show to be canceled before it even gets off the ground. And when they do you aren't surprised; this type of thing always happens to you. As you can see I whipped up an AD banner as quickly as I could (It's not perfect... but it'll do). It's hard to make text work on multi-color backgrounds. Looking for pictures of AD for the banner was a real bummer. It brought up so many great memories of the show (hence the banner text)... and by coincidence the song "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinead O'connor started playing on Napster. Here's a recreation of what happened: Me: Okay, let's find some pictures. Sinead: It's been seven hours and fifteen days... Me: Oh no. Sinead: Since you took your love away... Me: Okay, there's one of Gob doing magic. I guess all the magic in the world couldn't save the show. (tear) Sinead: Since you been gone I can do whatever I want, I can see whomever I choose... Me: That's a picture of Tobias in his blue man paint. He would always camouflage himself with other blue things so he could follow Lindsay. (whimper) Sinead: I can eat my dinner in a fancy restaurant, But nothing, I said nothing can take away these blues... Me: There's Franklin! Sinead: `Cause nothing compares, nothing compares to you... Me: (bawling) And that went on until the song was over. :) It's good to get out your emotions. I'm definitely going to miss Arrested Development, but as I said, I will recover. What's the worst cancelation you've had to endure? What show's bitter end left a gaping hole in your heart, if any? And on a scale of 0-10 how much will you miss Arrested Development?

Superlatives

Well, this is it. I promised something big and this is the best thing I could come up with. Welcome to the Class of 2005 TV.com Superlatives. :) First, a couple of notes: I know there are plenty of TV.com awards on the off-topic forum, but as far as I know none of them are closed ballot. And not many of my friends go to the off-topic room. :) And I'm not doing this to make ten people feel elite and everyone else feel bad. I'm doing it to honor ten great TV.com users. Here are voting rules: You can only vote for one person for one category. Meaning you cannot vote for "John_Doe" in every category. Just one. Also, you can vote for yourself and you can vote for me, although you don't have to do either. :) Fill out your ballot and PM it to me. The Winners will be announced on Friday, November 18. All of the winners will be sent a personalized photoshop plaque that they can post on their blog. Remember: It's a closed ballot. Vote for whoever you want. You can tell Jane_Doe you voted for her instead of John_DOe, even if you didn't, and she'll never know any better. AWARD CATEGORIES: Funniest User Most Influential User Smartest User Best Blog Best Poster Most Polite Best Cult Best Banner Best Blopper Most Popular Alright, let the voting begin! Don't forget to leave comments. What do you think about the Class of 2005 Superlatives? Stupid? A little bit? Yeah, I see where you're coming from, but I love superlatives, so I couldn't help myself. :D

Guilty Pleasures

Last night... um... this is hard. Last night there was nothing else on at 8:30... so... umm... yeah, I watched Stacked. And the thing that I'm really ashamed of is that I like it! It was funny! I don't know what's happening to me... Needless to say, I finally have a guilty pleasure. Now I'm going to write about some of the other shows of the past week that I hadn't written about before. Starting off with... Ghost Whisperer This was the first time I had seen this show, and I'll give it credit for being slightly entertaining, but it's far inferior to Medium. In fact, it's hard to believe that it was created before Medium aired. How do two shows that similar get created at the same time without any connection between them? Either way, I'm likely to keep watching the Ghost Whisperer because there isn't anything else good on at that time. Supernanny's regular episodes are definitely not as good as the Megean Cooke ep. Surface They're going to build a submarine out of a tin can. This week's was actually a pretty good episode, but I can't get past that submarine thing. Surface has officialy jumped the new species of invertebrate. Invasion "Surprise! We're good!" That's the message I got from Invasion this week. Although it was another zero-plot-movement episode, this time it was actually enjoyable. The Sheriff trying to convince Larkin that the lights are actually Squid is a very smart storyline, something that's been absent in the show until now. And I'm actually looking forward to next week's episode. Invasion get's the Most Improved Show of the Week Award. :) Grey's Anatomy Whew, that was close! This week's episode turned the shark around and hopefully he/she won't be seen for a long time. That's all I have time for today. I have to go to town for groceries. I'll be back later. P.S. Tomorrow is the beginning of something big for my blog. It will be broken into two parts. The first (tomorrow) will be all about TV and the second (Monday) will be all about you, the viewer!
