Temporary Return of Sorts

Like Jedite1 I have returned! ... Temporarily. I’m not sure if there is anyone who I used to know back in the day still here but yeah, I just wanted to get around to doing another blog since I didn’t do one in two years at this point. Boy the site's layout has changed since then.

I did say I didn’t just want to fall off the face of the blogging scene but it seems like I pretty much did. Apologies to anybody who has been expecting anything from me, but I can offer some stuff at least. Other than that though, I wouldn’t hold my breath on doing any more serious blogs discussing the gaming scene. Obviously you might have noticed I don’t really care about doing the gaming news thing anymore.

What I am doing, I’ve gotten around to doing a collaboration with a guy on roleplayerguild that I’ll be making into a fanfic later on. If I put up another blog it will probably be to promote its debut. So I might not be totally dead but if I do stop posting blogs from this day on, that’s pretty much why.

I pretty much just wanted to get this off my conscience. Thanks for reading. I’ll see you guys again probably some day.

That’s the news from Myviewing as of January 31, 2014.

Cramming

What is up guys I have finally gotten another fit of stuff to write about. January has been a thankfully lazy month for me and I wasn't really keeping track of a whole lot of stuff that's been going on so I'm not sure if I can say a whole lot. I did get the first First Viewing up for this year though, a cover on Ramayana: The Epic.

If you want to see what I have to think about the movie, here is my series of reactions: http://www.viddler.com/v/706ef1b6

And if you want to just see the movie for yourself: http://www.hulu.com/watch/311372/ramayana-the-epic

So for a series of random stuff, I remember hearing that Microsoft doesn't really care about exclusives. It stinks to hear that they actually feel this way, but at the same time I could kind of feel it coming. Back when the Xbox 360 was getting a ton of exclusive content it kind of left some people like me thinking that it would continue to be this way throughout the entire gen. We thought Mass Effect wouldn't go to the Playstation 3 and it did. We also thought Rare would be encouraged to make a series of sequels to games like Perfect Dark and Banjo-Kazooie or even make a franchise out of Kameo if anybody remembers that game, but instead it's just Kinect Sport for them from now on. I know most people thought Blue Dragon would get more sequels instead of getting spin-offs on the DS, I was way more hopeful for a Lost Odyssey sequel though and Mistwalker obviously isn't dedicated to doing anything on the HD twins it would seem. And as it shows, none of that has come to pass even though Microsoft does have a few franchises going like Gears, Fable, Halo, and Forza.

I don't know if it exactly helps anybody to know that now they're also apparently fully focused on working for Kinect and I don't know if they have anything else planned outside of just that. So I'm not sure if this means that they are going to try and go the whole Wii route with the next system or if they're going to go so focused on the casual gaming market that it might irritate its previous owners. I'm pretty sure Halo, Gears and Forza will be continued at this point though I have a feeling that Fable might be discontinued for some reason. Well I guess now I'll have to wait until next gen to see if I'm still willing to support Microsoft's console endeavors or if I can just get the same games elsewhere.

On the gaming front, not much has gone up since like in the typical January not much usually gets released with the exception of maybe one or two somewhat big names. I did play my first game for this year though, AMY. Yeah every year I end up looking at a game and end up thinking, "Wow this game got such bad reviews I have got to see how bad it is for myself." I played the demo and it didn't seem bad so I got the full game. I mean I've played Escape from Bug Island and I think it got the same ratings as this and I actually liked the game along with Alone in the Dark and Cursed Mountain so I thought why not take the dive? I have been playing it on hard and I actually was enjoying this game up until Chapter 4. It's at this point where the game starts to get rather impossible and tedious to accomplish. I'm probably still going to try and beat it though. In general this is probably only worth it if you're a dedicated diehard survival horror fan who plays everything in the genre. Otherwise if you just want a good game, just pick up SIREN: Bloodcurse instead on PSN.

Time to cram in a few more things I'm a bit lazy to elaborate on:
That actually reminds me of this much, I have gotten a PSN account working and if anyone wants to add me, feel free to look up the username Myviewing. I want it to be tomorrow already, I want to get Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Soulcalibur V already. Red Tails is a pretty cool movie. I'm really bored and don't know how to continue going on. Writing is fun and tedious at the same time. There you go.

That's the news from Myviewing as of January 30, 2012.

So Christmas week was pretty crazy

Despite that, I have managed to have a very fun and fruitful Christmas week this week. For a couple of days I haven't really been able or willing to type up anything because of that. Of course as you might have guessed, this all happened after my birthday and since I got and gave more stuff than I can really remember, I'll just offer what I have obtained these past few weeks. For my birthday I got Kirby's Return to Dreamland and Professor Layton and the Last Specter. Over my visit to my grandparents I got Mario Kart 7, Saints Row the Third, Sonic Generations and Aliens Infestation. Then finally just yesterday where I got Super Mario 3D Land.

And finally just today I have obtained what will probably make several people happy, I have obtained a Playstation 3! Yes, after three years of beating around the bush and thinking about it, I have finally obtained a Playstation 3 along with my first two games, Bleach: Soul Resurreccion and Valkyria Chronicles. It also allows me to pick up Tales of Graces f and Dragon's Crown when they come out next year. I'm a little too lazy to bother with an unboxing video so that's why you probably won't see a viddler video of it.

Something to entertain everybody for those who are looking for a final day of 2011 and I hope you all enjoy the next year. And this year I actually have a resolution for once. As you might have heard from me before, I plan on doing a theme month for my First Viewing series in February where I see Studio Ghibli films for the first time. The only one I won't be adding is Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind because of two reasons. Technically it's not a Studio Ghibli film since it was made before the studio's formation, but the most real reason is because I have already seen it even though it was a few years since I've seen it. Do hope to enjoy them after hearing about their acclaim for the longest time. Until then? I have found one that I think looks pretty interesting but I'm not sure what else to do at this point.

I also made my pre-orders for Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Soulcalibur V at Bestbuy today. Even better there is a Collector's Edition of Final Fantasy this time, I was hoping for there to be one for the first XIII and I think there was in Europe but it wasn't released elsewhere for some reason. Still I finally get to pick up a Collector's Edition and get the soundtrack that comes with it along with the other stuff. I did want the Collector's Edition for Soulcalibur IV, but I didn't have a 360 or a PS3 at the time so here was my chance.

That's how it's been for me, hope everybody else has enjoyed the holiday season like I did and of course it's time for a new year. And of course comes December 21, 2012. Yeah there's my message to you for this end of times.

First Viewing: Santa Claus Conquers the Martians

Guess what guys, I decided I wanted to suffer even more it turns out. I've done some pretty long ones before, but I think I've gotten the hang of doing vids around the 13 minutes length. Ladies and gentlermen, I present to you Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.

... Yeah. My nutshell experience on it: Parents, if you want to save yourself the trouble of finding coal for you naughty kids this Christmas, just sit them down and have them watch this. I guarantee you you'll have no trouble for the rest of the year.

That's what I have for today's view, if you have any suggestions, please feel free to send a PM or leave a comment about what I should do. I'll try and respond to the suggestion about whether or not I've seen it or it would be fit for a video.

And for the chance to see my suffering: http://www.viddler.com/explore/Myviewing/videos/17/

On some other matters, if you got a 3DS earlier this year, the second half of the ambassador program is coming tomorrow where you getten free GBA games. Also if you have been to eShop before, download a copy of Pushmo. Very good platformer puzzle game on Nintendo's part and doesn't cost too much being at a really good value for the number of levels it has. It also looks really good in 3D I might add.

Second half of December is going to be busy for sure. If this is the last blog I do for this year, then you can at least know that I'm just a bit busy with Christmas stuff visiting my grandparents and such... And do enjoy it while you can mortals... for it shall be your last...

First Viewing: The Star Wars Holiday Special + Other stuff

Well everybody, I decided that I apparently wanted to suffer a lot. So I decided to sit myself down and watch probably the biggest insult to TV specials ever. The Star Wars Holiday Special.

Yes everybody, I have managed to decide to sit through the Holiday Special that has gone down in many notorious ways. So here you go if you want to see me suffer: http://www.viddler.com/explore/Myviewing/videos/16/

And for your own chance to suffer: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=323909610753051544#

I've also got something special planned for next year and something that actually might work as a New Year's Resolution for next year. For next year, I would like to do a theme month of Studio Ghibli films ideally sometime before The Secret World of Arrietty comes out in theaters in February. Hopefully it won't be until then, I'll just need to find them on Amazon and the ones not available there elsewhere. Something to look forward to that I hope you guys might enjoy for this series.

Also yes, I've heard about this news of Shigeru Miyamoto "stepping down from his current position." It would help if anybody could help me get what this means. I hear some sources say it might mean he's basically going to be like Yuji Naka and make a seperate company or if this means he's planning to step down from Producer and back to head of a development team within Nintendo. I think it might be the latter, at least I hope that might be the case.

And if you've been keeping track of what goes on every two years for the past couple of years, you'll probably know that I'm going to be visiting my grandparents again for Christmas, so definatley don't expect much from me over the next few weeks especially when I start to work myself to make up for lost time at my workplace. Other than that, it's business as usual and I hope you all have a happy December and a Merry Christmas if this is the last one I post for a while.

S*(&%^ YESSSSSSSS!!!

Some of you might remember a few months ago I did a blog talking about Operation Rainfall and the ambition of bringing Xenoblade, The Last Story, and Pandora's Tower to the United States right? Great news: One third of the Operation has been accomplished. It might just be one game, but it is progress that I personally never thought to happen. As it is right now, Xenoblade Chronicles has been announced to be released next year in the U.S. in April.

http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/09LPao0thCWTobgndPH5UTuz4zsz63F4

So there's progress for us folks, it managed not only to be released in Europe, but now available worldwide. So any North American guys who have been anticipating any of the three at all, lets do our part and show Nintendo our gratitude for deciding to bring the game out here.

Legend of Zelda Double Feature

I should obviously put in some obligitory images showing my honor and dedication to the Legend of Zelda franchise. Ever since that day my Uncle introduced me to the series back in '97, it has been just a gaming experience that continues to provide greatness to this day. With that in mind, I bring you guys two videos related to the Legend of Zelda franchise. The first one is my unboxing of the Collector's Edition of Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

http://www.viddler.com/explore/Myviewing/videos/13/

And for my fifth entry in the First Viewing series, one that you might not have percieved possible. The Legend of Zelda: The Hero of Time.

No people, I am not trolling you. A couple of people actually made a fan film for Legend of Zelda which is pretty much a loose adaptation of Ocarina of Time. And made on a budget of $2 million, did it turn out any good? I offer you my view of the film: http://www.viddler.com/explore/Myviewing/videos/14/

And as usual if you want to see the movie yourself: http://www.veoh.com/watch/v19635224CJArpFXp?h1=The+Hero+of+Time(You'll have to use the Veoh Player, but it should be safe now).

So there you go people. November 20 and I got this game on launch. Thank you Nintendo for bringing us 25 years of a fantastic franchise, please let Shigeru Miyamoto bring another 25. I can only hope Miyamoto doesn't get killed or pulls a Steve Jobs on us. Even when those 25 pass, hopefully there will be some visionary game designer with the same mindset capable of bringing the franchise in the right direction like Nintendo has been capable of doing all these years.

First Viewing: Begotten (1991)

So another day and another iffy rant from me and I am currently 20+ hours into Skyrim. Anybody need to be lifted up in some way? Feel free and watch me try and tackle an indy film.

Are you a fan of pretentious art house films? If so you probably heard about Begotten in some way. A super screwed up version of the book of Genesis and shot in black and white. Not only that but the entire script only consists of cricket chirping. Not to mention a ton of uncompromising images of human pain and suffering to tell its tale that will probably make you feel uneasy as you watch it.

Here goes nothing, my delve into Begotten: http://www.viddler.com/explore/Myviewing/videos/12/

And if you want to see the movie yourself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubfkP1rweBo

That's what I have for today's view, if you have any suggestions, please feel free to send a PM or leave a comment about what I should do. I'll try and respond to the suggestion about whether or not I've seen it or it would be fit for a video. And just for a sneak preview, I actually have something special planned for November 20 in this series. What will it be? I'll give you a hint: It has to do with what comes out in the next three days.

Rant(ish): Game Review Score Reactions

This rant(ish) probably couldn't come at any worse timing, but at the same time it's something that's been nagging me for a bit and I think now is the time to consider it.

Does anybody remember back in the day when people bought a game just because it had cool box art? Maybe I'm just nostalgic or something, but I remember that being the case back when I was younger. I bought games like Chameleon Twist 2 and Croc: Legend of the Gobbos and played to my heart's content with Yoshi's Story not because they had great fantastic reviews that everybody was lauding, but because they were based on cool concepts, cool directions, and just looked like cool games. So what really happened in between then and now?

It's something that's been making me ask what's going on in the internet community for a while, it seems to me like the movie community, the music community, and the literature community don't have a problem with other people or with reviews affecting their likes and dislikes. Whenever a new game comes out, most especially within a franchise with a long legacy of bringing out great games or one that just has more hype behind it than it can deliver, if the game gets less than an 8 out of 10 then it sends people off into a frenzy about how the reviewer was wrong and should have done something to make his or review better. On the flip side, if a game that used to be known for bringing out good games and went into a rut for a while, then people expect the worst possible reviews.

Is there really something I'm missing as far as reviews go when it comes to video games? When Transformers: Dark of the Moon got a 35% on Rottentomatoes, the movie community pretty much just shrugged it off, supported the people who made it and went to see it. People on IMDB might cry about how this movie got to make more than a billion dollars and Black Swan didn't, but few people are treated as idiots if they like the movie. Whenever a lead pop idol puts out a new song and it somehow manages to get as maligned as much as Rebecca Black's Friday song or Ke$sha's Tik Tok, nobody starts doing essays about how people are mentally challenged for liking the song. Whenever a new Star Wars book comes out, the most people do is just wish for the old days when the Extended Universe was supposedly a better franchise, but they don't treat the average reader like they don't know what a good book is.

I might be out of touch with these communities for making these assumptions, I just see people in these communities acting on at least some level of maturity whenever reviewers give something the community likes a sub-par review. This is something that has me put off by a portion of the gaming community which was something that started back in 2007 as being the earliest instance of this as far as I can remember. When Metroid Prime 3: Corruption got an 8.5 from gamespot, there were those displeased with the score but even then people at least bought the game and recognized there was quality behind it. When Killzone 2 came out in 2009 though, whenever a website gave the game less than IGN's score of 9.4 out of 10, the review would receive bashings and death threats for not giving it a higher score, or even G4's review which gave it a 5 out of 5 and people still complained just because the reviewer didn't say it was a perfect game.

Are gamers just too self-conscious or something? Me personally when I started to pick up a source of income and game at a more in depth level back in 2007, I've played whatever interested me and I even found some games to be better than more highly rated games that are out there. I found games like The Darkness to have a more intriguing and entertaining game than other FPS games like Call of Duty 2&3 or Halo 3. I found NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams to be a fantastic game that I don't regret purchasing, along with the Legend of Spyro trilogy, The Last Remnant, the short lived Spectrobes franchise, several others I'm probably forgetting.

I've also played highly rated games from this gen and the gen before I didn't like such as Dragon Age: Origins because it was too calculated and slow-paced for me to get into and the final boss was next to impossible for me to finish. A more recent example is Dark Souls, I knew going in this game was going to be hard, but I didn't think it was going to be as tedious and frustrating as it ended up being and I can't find myself progressing at a decent pace of any kind. Even with these in mind, both are at least highly rated AA games and I was able to find some fun at some points, but these were games I just didn't enjoy.

I really don't know if there is any definitive answer as to why reviews are so important for gamers nowadays, but I really do miss the days when people just played the games they wanted to enjoy. People didn't write articles about how a game was forsaking its old fan base just to become a generic action franchise, how a game was supposedly dumbed down to appeal to western frag heads, how a game somehow killed off what was supposed to be gamings last great heroine just because she was given emotions, people just bought what looked entertaining. Even if they didn't like it they didn't have to go on the internet and complain about how certain people didn't see it in the right way or how the masses are wrong for liking whatever it was.

I think I rambled on long enough, that's just the problem I have with the gaming community as it is. Just because a game gets a 7.5, and from one website at that so far as I write this, people feel the need to tell Tom McShea that he's wrong for doing so. My reaction to this is just the following: I'll buy the game. Legend of Zelda has yet to disappoint me as far as still providing great games even if there was one or two I didn't like, and if the franchise does go downhill somehow in my eyes then I just won't buy the games anymore even if the gaming media still likes it. Metal Gear Solid 2 was the last game in the Metal Gear series I'll probably ever buy, but I don't care if everybody around me praises it like it's the greatest franchise ever and Hideo Kojima is somehow the second coming of Stanley Kubrick.

That's really all I can think of to ramble on. If anybody is curious about a solution to all this, I don't really think there is because it only allows for two possible scenarios. The first one is that gamers come together and agree there are differing tastes and understand that some people might not like what a huge chunk of the community does like and vice versa. I don't see this happening because gaming is currently more profitable than movies as it is and this whole reviewing thing is still an issue for many, that and I personally doubt the gaming community's ability to come together and agree on anything without only internet drama following.

The only other solution is for gaming to get even more mainstream and more economical for the average consumer. With gaming on the same level as movies, music, and books as far as accessibility, even if the latest game in a long running franchise was to get a 20% approval from critics, people would still flood to it and support the people who made it for their hard work. Would developers still put in the same amount of effort into a game like they do now? Maybe some but I don't think all of them would.

It might serve as a bit of a wakeup call for the gaming community as well and essentially be the boot that kicks them out of the closet and into the main light where everyone can observe them. If this ends up being the case, will anybody still take the gaming community seriously and see gaming as a legitimate source of entertainment or as anything other than just a lineup of toys to keep older children in adults bodies entertained? It might be a bit melodramatic to question this, but somewhat legitimate because of how television personalities and news reporters like to portray gamers as essentially short tempered, antisocial individuals. It doesn't sound all that appealing to many people to be cast in the same category as these people and yet they seem to be the ones that stand out as the rational and thoughtful ones.

Okay for real this time, this whole rant(ish) thing that I've written up is just a 1.5k word way of saying this to people who don't like seeing a supposedly "bad score" attached to a game they are exicted for whether it be Skyward Sword here today or any game in the future: Just buy the game.

Skyrim *_______*

I have it folks, Bethesda's newest epic The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Also a little bit of entertainment value, my uboxing of what is probably going to be the biggest Collector's Edition in human history of video gaming.

There goes my life sad to say. Please help me Skyward Sword.
