I personally know three people who had weird issues with their AMD gpu's with certain games and the drivers were the issue new and old didnt matter. One had a 5770 another had a 5870 and another 4870X2. And once they moved to Nvidia based cards all their issues disappeared. Both Nvidia and AMD arent perfect but Nvidia drivers tend to be more compatible and more refined then AMD's, but both are always improving. both have issues but saying AMD drivers are just as good or better then Nvidia's is just false.
If the TC is willing to wait for Kepler he will then have a full picture of whats best for him.

Now you know someone who JUST spent a few hours finding the right nvidia GRAPHICS drivers that didn't mess up the SOUND
The 4870x2 was probably AMDs last poorly supported card. And the 5xxx series was right when AMD started flexing its driver quality muscles.
Since the release of the 6xxx cards AMDs drivers have been superb.
Were you using HDMI through the gpu to supply audio also? You should know that even with their newer drivers for the 6000's series also help the 5000's series also. The guy that had the 5870 switched back in 2010, but the other two had the latest drivers before switching. I even tried helping them out and looked for any fixes , I didnt want them to spend money if they didnt have too.DVI only, no clue why it was messing up the sound. I spent quite a bit of time trying to fix it prior to nvidias newest drivers, and then when the new drivers came out, it fixed it. this was an issue for a good couple of months prior to that.
My point is, you will run across driver issues often, especially if you are the go to guy for people's tech support. ATi drivers were bad, but now they aren't. Nvidia drivers have always been about this good. AMD isn't quite to the same level that nvidia is but they are very very close. the 4870x2 was crap and AMD had no clue how to handle crossfire.
