I know that people are blaming Nintendo for this, but really this whole article could be summed up as "Wii console is being a console".

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: Sure, for standalone F2P titles. Part of the purpose of this one is to promote the $60 AAA title it's associated with, so they don't need to rely too heavily on microtransactions to get some benefit from it. Obviously, they would still be there, but they could make it one of the games where they're extra instead of necessary.

F*** Nintendo! Since me and my kids used our Wii as a soccer ball, and then I let them take it in the bath tub, all the games we downloaded are gone! What if I don't buy another Wii until 2020, and also quit my internet service and smash my PC so I can't play them on a better emulator than the Virtual Console?! Then I'll be screwed and it'll be Nintendo's fault! It's a good thing that they go bankrupt and quit the hardware business every time they release a new console, because they deserve it!

@gamingdevil800: True, and Silicon Knights did start it with their own BS lawsuit. My point is that we have seen what happens when another company pushes them too much.

Go ahead mess with Epic games over their engine. But first take a look at how well it worked for Too Human.

Oh wait, you can't look at it because Epic sued Silicon Knights into oblivion so badly that the game was banned from being sold ever again. Good luck with your frivolous claim Bluehole.

@visforvictory: You couldn't play your NES cartridges on your SNES when we were kids, so it's really not much different. The most they are guilty of is not using the available technology to make it more consumer-friendly than it used to be.

And Amiibo stuff. They are guilty as hell of that.

Anyway, that's a good reason to buy games on PC. Most of the time you can find a DRM-free version somewhere, or there is nothing wrong with using a crack if you actually purchased the game. Even most of my games on Steam don't really need to connect to their Network to run.

I'm pretty sure one of the main reasons companies bother to make consoles is to do the exact things you are complaining about, so it's unlikely to ever get much better on consoles. I'm surprised Microsoft and Sony have allowed as much backward compatibility as they have.

@Evenglare: Here's a good reason: Because the main reason consoles exist is to rip you off with stuff like this. Sony is not going to stop doing this because you have paid them hundreds of dollars to support their behavior.

@barcaazul: Except they're actually repeating their entire avalanche of Destiny 2 ads too.
