A really solid and pretty fresh take on an aging formula, I've been enjoying this so far...but I have to admit, I really tire of gratuitous perversion in many jrpgs, and this game has had me roll my eyes a few times now, particularly the old sage. To each their own, and I understand cultural differences, but the "horny old guy tactlessly hitting on the young women" thing stopped entertaining me when I was a teenager, I feel there are better (and funnier) ways of trying to convey chemistry (or lust) without it, and it would be nice to see writers give their characters more integrity and depth, while still maintaining the fun and addictive gameplay.
Soapbox over, that's really my only gripe so far (and one that I can look past), in an otherwise fantastic game.
I loved the lighting of the original, it definitely popped out more, which gave it a very unique feel compared to many brown and boring action rpgs...and it doesn't look so dated that I wouldn't just play it again over the new release.
Great list! My favorite? Tough, but I might have to go with Agro from Shadow of the Colossus, with an honorable mention to whomever you get paired with in Journey. :D
@Chris_Watters @Alecmrhand On the dev's blog, they mention that their newest patch, aimed to roll out this week, will address a bunch of issues and will conduct their final wipe, as they are implementing a fix to keep save data from here on out. I've been a massive fan of the game for a while, though it is definitely sort of a niche genre, but with the continuing additions of story elements, group play and tons of new things to do and see, it's something to keep an eye on. Also, honorable mention to the composers, the game has a stellar soundtrack...pun mildly intended.
@mute4 I enjoyed the online, and it brings a nice charm and atmosphere to the game, but Dark Souls is packed with so much awesome, that you can't go wrong with offline either. Have fun!
Top of the list for me is Dark Souls 2, but I'm looking forward to countless others, including Monolith Soft's X, The Witcher 3, and I'm excited to see if Starbound gets an official release, though the amazing "beta" has been keeping me entertained for a while now.
Great review, this was a game I was looking to pick up, and locking in an 8 lets me know what to expect. Nothing revolutionary, but still entertaining, and I'm okay with that.
