Ended up with a 3800+ athlon X2 dual core, 2GB ddr pc3200 and a 9600GT. I was hoping to play the latest games but it seems to fall way short so i'm gonna stick to playing Quakelive and TF2 online on the PC and stick to the XBOX 360 for single player eye candy(i have a wii too) - I got priced out!!!

so i bought a 9600gt and its very good - runs crysis in high everything playable.

so the 8600gt is a bad choice?

My PC is:

socket 939 mainboard

Athlon 3800+ X2 (dual core) (runs at 2ghz each core)

2gb ddr pc3200

my question is...

Should i buy either an 8600gt or a 9600gt?

I am on a tight budget and don't want to waste the extra money on a 9600gt if my pc would 'bottleneck' its extra performance over the much cheaper 8600gt. Any advice would be appreciated and cool :-)

Half Life 2 doesn't have amazing graphics anymore..

the reason i mentioned half life 2 and the wii is because the graphics in hl2 will run on a very modest pc indeed and they still better what the wii has to offer visually. I am aware of games at nice as crysis but i very much doubt it'd run on a cheapo pc!

They are very cheap. Case and point: ask yourself how much you could rig a pc to play half life 2? then ask yourself if half life 2 owns all wii titles gfx?

They have the biggest back catalogue of games bar none! and emulation to end all!

If you so desire you can beef up your PC to surpass the current gen machines gfx wise.

The current consoles strive to be true mulimedia devices when the PC is that and always has been so to a point of perfection.

This was a passing thought i'd put here to see what sort of reasons for against, I won't keep going on about it so there you have it i suppose. Oh one thing i will say is that i own an XBOX 360 and a DS so it's not like i don't see value in consoles too.
