That vector graphics Star Wars game is the first game that I have clear memories of. Just like the movie, it made something awesome out of the limited technology of the time. The music and voices from the movies were enough to get me pumped. Even the flight stick for it was cool. I remember saving every quarter that passed through my possession for the next time mom needed to go to the mall, and I'd zip straight to the arcade for that game. Eventually I got the ColecoVision version and that started a life-long love of video games.

Ultima 7 had an awesome (for the time) first few hours.

Dragon Age 2 was pretty bad, but the very beginning where you play through Varric's exaggeration of the story had me hooked.

I wasted my childhood playing Dungeon Master. Now I waste my adulthood with Grimrock. Bless you Almost Human.

@jsmoke03 I don't think his point is that we are burned out, it's that some gamers enjoy innovation. I'm sure that this is true across generations, but many of us can remember a time when new experiences came around every year or so. Not so much lately.

Good job Danny. I've been thinking along the same lines for a while (I have you beat by a few years -- more of the Zork/Ultima generation). But this raises an interesting question: if you're right, what is the purpose of video game reviews? Should it be based on genre -- like with fiction and movies? For example, horror fans couldn't care less what the New York Times has to say about horror movies, and fans of science fiction probably pay more attention to sites devoted to their genre as opposed to general reviews of literature and movies. Should there be a FPS site that weighs in on games like Desitny? Maybe a site devoted to RPGs would rank it differently... and that might be a very good thing for the diverse world of gamers.

@suppaphly42 I see your point, but I never placed much stock in the number -- especially in an "other take" review. I don't think it contributes to the metascore anyway.

Fans of the game don't have to take this seriously since they already like the game. Reviews aren't for people who are already fans. But I think this helps out potential customers. If you don't like slow skill progression, then you might not like this game. I think that's something worth telling people.

I really like these "other take" reviews. If this had been the main review for the game, I think many of the complaints here would be valid. You shouldn't have someone who doesn't like the selling point of a game review that game. You wouldn't want someone who hates sports games to review Madden.

On the other hand, I think it is a good thing to let potential customers know that Souls isn't for everyone. I think it's funny that the main complaint against the reviewer seems to be "Souls isn't for everyone", when that's precisely what he's trying to convey.

Memories. I remember it being much more awesome looking... I was thinking someone should remake this about halfway through the video, but then it dawned on me that this was mostly just strafe, shoot, repeat. Probably wouldn't hold up.

This is one of the saddest (gaming related) things I've read in a while. Almost any FF game would have been a better place to start. Don't let this put you off the franchise. The great thing about the series is that it is pretty varied (for a JRPG series), so if you don't like one, you might like another. The "true sequels" -- X-2, XIII-2, and Lightning Returns, are the worst in my opinion. IV, VI, VII, IX, X, XII -- all different from each other and all amazing.

@reza_razor No, in the English version "Suteki Da Ne" is replaced by a cover of "Boogie Nights" sung by Shania Twain.
